JESUS AND BEELZEBUL
REFER: Lk 11: 15-26(11th October 2024)
By claiming that Jesus uses Beelzebul to exorcise demons, the scribes from Jerusalem are at least accusing Jesus of witchcraft, if not Satan-worship. Jesus points out the absurdity of Satan telling his own demons to leave a man when removing the demon would cause damage to his own domain. Beelzebub, in the Bible, the prince of the devils. In the Old Testament, in the form Baalzebub, it is the name given to the god of the Philistine city of Ekron (II Kings 1:1-18). Neither name is found elsewhere in the Old Testament, and there is only one reference to it in other Jewish literature. See devil. In the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, this parable forms part of the Beelzebul controversy, where Jesus's opponents accuse him of gaining his power to exorcise demons by being in league with Satan. In a common Interpretation, the strong man represents Satan, and the attacker represents Jesus.
