It’s finally cooling off a little in Northwest Florida. My okra is still producing, but I’m transitioning into my cool weather crops. I have sugar snaps and snow peas coming up that I kept shaded to get it going. Unfortunately, it was just too hot to get broccoli started even though I kept them shaded. Almost no germination. Just direct sowed some lettuce and radishes and will direct seed some broccoli and cauliflower. We’ve got about three months until first frost in December, and that’s when I’ll plant my garlic bulbs, which have been chilling in the fridge. Around the first of the year, I’ll start tomatoes and peppers for the spring garden. By mid-February, we’re approaching our 50/50 last frost date, and all that stuff needs to be in the ground by then to beat the pest which will show up in April.

My favorite greens are the bitter greens, I love arugula, kales, radicchio and others for salads. As to herbs, Basil, Rosemary, and Mexican tarragon are my favorite herbs. I also like to grow fennel both for the bulbs and the fronds.

My timing for planting peppers might be changing too.. I use to start them in winter, plant them out in Spring, but the plants seemed to be hit or miss with my garden issues. But last September, a pepper plant was self-seeded and grew through Fall and Winter. It didn't look good through that time, but when the sun and warm weather hit in Spring, it was an amazing plant! So now, I will be planting out my peppers very soon to try that again, but intentionally😆Thank you for your videos!😄

Marjoram has done well here. Not thriving but ok. Lasted all summer in some shade in poor sandy native soil. Thinking about trying an adjacent like Syrian oregano aka zaatar or perhaps a Lebanese one. Rosemary is purported to do well here.

I hope you are well! I'm glad you made it through Milton intact. I have some questions for you. I have your 2024 garden guide. When you mention planting squash, which kind of squash? I assume it is winter squash at this point in the year. Seeds and/or plants? On the section on native plants, do you have a list of native plant seeds that can be direct sowed and those that need stratification? Such as milkweed seeds? I appreciate all you do! Be safe!
