Hi Garden Friends! Its October, but the garden doesn't care, the blooms keep coming! I have worked on adding continual color and blooms to my garden over the last couple of years, and its starting to pay off. I still have flowers blooming this late in the season. I'm so thankful for the gift of flowers in October. We have had a unseasonably warm week and I have had a chance to spend some time in the garden enjoying the remainder of the blooms. Sheffield Mums, Anemones, Asters, Monkshood, and Montauk daisies are among some of the last blooms in my garden. Any day now the first frost will come and it will all end for the season. But for now we enjoy what's left of the garden. What's still blooming in your October garden? Your deep plum with white tipped dahlia is pronounced "Ed-in-bur-a"....as in the place in Scotland..."Edinborough". I'm pretty sure this is the name. Its been around for over 10 yrs and is a dependable, productive and strong stemmed variety. I do agree that the big dahlias are too big for vase arrangements and i prefer the decorative and ball and even the single petals or unusual ones like "fancy pants" and "bumble bee". Say hi and a big thanks to George for learning how to be a patient garden.....it can be soo frustrating at times but because you organize well....their have hardly ever been any major errors.😊

The rabbits destroyed my Pearl Glam this year, but it is hanging on and put out some new growth. I have a row of Bobo (also in full sun) as well and it behaves the exact same way as yours. The size is appropriate for my space, so I hesitate pulling them out. I have thought about replacing them with Firelight Tidbit, but going to hang on awhile longer. Hi Steph, Your last video had a stunning "crassula seiboldi" that was so healthy wi5h much larger leaves than my sad plant. Its one of my favorite succulents besides sedum morgana , which has pink scented flowers with mint, blue green triangular leaves. Very sculptural. Mine are in a small pot as they havent grown much in 2 yrs. They are in a succulent mix, in a ceramic pot and in direct filtered sunlight. What do you think I should do, now its spring summer? Should i put it in a terracotta pot and add more potting soil for added food and fluff up the soil for better drainage?? I do water regularly but the roots seem so shallow and delicate. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Stepanie. From Jo in New Zealand 😊
@HookedandRootedАй бұрын
Hi Jo, Your mint scented sedum sounds lovely. I do agree that the sieboldi does seem delicate and has shallow roots. I too am weary of transplanting it. I do find the terracotta pots drain fast, and allows the soil to dry out quickly which the sedum seem to prefer. Mine hasn't gotten too large either. It receives morning shade and afternoon sun for a couple of hours. I will be repotting it to a larger terracotta pot (going from an 8" to a 10") after the winter, and will refresh the soil with some new potting soil.
@jomassey4207Ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Steph. Will attempt a new terracotta pot and new soil too.😊@@HookedandRooted

@HookedandRootedАй бұрын
Hi Jennie, Be very careful about removing it. There is probably some helpful information online about it. I'm researching this as well. The whirlwind would be a great choice for around a fountain. Coneflowers do prefer a dryer/more fast draining soil. I have coneflower in that bed as well, the hardier varieties do o.k. but I have lost some of the doubles and fancier ones due to the moisture.

@rewbew9345Ай бұрын
I am in NE Oregon, same zone, and our local nursery won’t carry Japanese maples because “people don’t have enough shade, they are too expensive even at cost and hers died after 4 years”. I know there are some that are rated down to a zone 4, so maybe I need to hunt for that. Do you put lemon cypress in the ground? If so, what requirements do you give it?
@HookedandRootedАй бұрын
Hi there, I don't have lemon cypress. However, we are in a zone 6b/7a, so thankfully maples do mostly well here. I have purchased many of my maples from Oregon and they get shipped here to Massachusetts. I always figured Oregon has the best maple growing conditions since so many are grown there, maybe in the southern region.
@rewbew9345Ай бұрын
@@HookedandRooted yes. I assumed that too. I might have to go out of my local area to find something. I did have one die because it was in a cold zone in my yard, not much protection but a tiny one I have had done really well against my house, south side.

Hi Gracie, That sounds like what normally happens in Fall, the leaves yellowing and dropping. Perhaps take it back to once per week now. Just water deeply that one time. Then by next season, unless you have very long periods of drought, let the weather take care of things. They are very drought tolerant. Hope this helps.
