October Surprise

Oct. 4, 2022 marks the 35th anniversary of the 1987 snowstorm that caused all kinds of damage and power outages throughout the Capital Region. NewsChannel 13 presents an hour-long special all about the storm. Hear from the entire First Warning Weather team as they explain why this storm took everyone by surprise. They also look at how the power grid has changed and the forecasting improvements since then. Plus, a special sendoff for Chief Meteorologist Bob Kovachick.

Yup, I was working for the convent of mercy in Albany, & was out there running the snowblower on the parking lot that day. It was crazy. I’m glad I ran across this video, I haven’t had satellite or cable tv, or whatever they call it now in about 10 years,so I haven’t seen your newscasts since then. I really miss the ed, Chris, & Bob daily news. I wish you guys would put them out on KZbin. My son josh peppin was on the big brother show back in the late eighties I am anxious to see. I was working when it aired & missed it. I would love a copy of it. Paul, & Kumi, sabrina, Lydia, Jim, great cast members. Others, Elaine, can’t forget Elaine. I’m sure I’m forgetting some I used to enjoy watching. Great to see some f you today.

Look at how young you all were, wow, I remember when Bob first came, I thought he was so handsome. Irene, I was doing my weekend drill at the Albany reserve center. They had us putting the med supplies back away from our last 2 week field training, & then we were released for the day. I lived two blocks from the drill center on n Allen Str. We didn’t get hit nearly as bad as other areas. Watching the reports on the news was unbelievable. Troy got hit bad, & the woman who was swept away, the small towns that got devastated. Crazy.

‘93, I started working at suny, Indian quad. I don’t remember this, I just bought my first crooked little house in poor neighborhood. I guess that preoccupied me.

I was visiting friends in Albany over that period. We had been in Schenectady at an event and we got back to my friends' apartment in Colonie about 3:00 AM and nothing was going on at all weather wise. I was awakened at 8:30 AM by what sounded like gunshots. It turned out to be the sound of tree branches snapping off. A tree fell on my car and smashed the windshield. Power was out and my friends had no food in the apartment as they always ordered takeout. The Colonie Center was the only place around with power so we waded thru the wet snow to get there. We stopped at a resteraunt and they had no menu, they just told you what they had. Coffee and soup mostly. I was stuck in Albany for three days until the roads got cleared because my summer tires could not grip the road. I had to drive 40 miles home with a heavy breeze blowing thru my broken windshield.
