In today's video, we'll watch Albert, our octopus, explore a box of mirrors. This was requested by one of our wonderful viewers.
The Request
I'd like to see how an octopus would react if he was placed in a room with many mirrors surrounding him.
The Setup
One way to set this up would be to place small mirrors all around the aquarium.
Hypothesis
I believe the octopus will try to hide from all the other octopi.
Instead of putting our octopus in a tank surrounded by mirrors, we chose to place a mirrored box inside a big tank. This gives the octopus a chance to explore the box on his own will and helps avoid any unnecessary stress.
Just like many of you, we expected a completely different outcome in this one. We thought a quick glance would be the extent of his exploration but he surprisingly entered the box of mirrors 3 times without much hesitation. The final time he entered the box, he stayed in there for a little over 30 minutes. He even felt comfortable enough to take a quick nap!
Thank you all for your unique ideas. We'll do our best to get to all of them!

This octopus is an incredibly methodical thinker! He goes inside and explores, and his mind boggles at all the infinities he sees. He goes back out and measures the exterior with his arms. Then he pops back inside. He is now certain the exterior of the box is a finite height, but inside, it looks infinite. Because he doesn’t trust his eyes, he now measures the interior height with his arms. He then goes back out and measures the length of the box. He goes inside and measures it with his arms. Now, he understands it’s some kind of trick, and he relaxes, realising he can see everything in the box, and that nothing can hide in that infinite space. He DOES think it’s trippy, and it stimulates his mind, so he decides to hang out and enjoy the weird vibes. I dig this octopus. My kind of guy!

I swear he's investigating it. He went out and checked around the sides of the box to examine it and try to understand how it works. 🤔 He also seems to find it amusing because he kept going back in. 😀

Of course the octopus was comfortable in the box of mirrors! It had never seen a more beautifully decorated room! By how comfortable it seemed, even on the first entry, I think it suspected the truth, right away. Maybe it has seen its own reflection before, in the tank glass? It still seemed to check the outside of the box, though, just to make sure there weren't any octopuses hiding there.

I was thinking that besides seeing himself from all angles and realizing "Hey, that's me"! he was perhaps also enjoying the super smooth feel of the mirrors themselves. I was intrigued when he was hanging of the ceiling! But he definitely was enjoying it. Would like to see more with this mirror box and see if other octopuses react in the same way. We might be onto something here!😀

That’s a GREAT point. I study cephalopod perceptions of the world, and while I think he was far less amused at seeing himself, I strongly agree that he probably was very into the profusion of shiny smoothness. I have noticed, over years of observations, that octopuses are mad for shiny and/or glossy and smooth, and even more specifically, optical gear. For some reason, they seem to hold convex lenses and mirrors in high-almost reverential-esteem.

Curious, I did read about how octopus fail the mirror test, but then thats hardly a bulletproof test of cognition. So, I wonder if the octopus, while not capable of recognizing itself in the mirror, is still cognizant that it is indeed a mirror/that there is no other octopus to be bothered by. - Some alternatives I can think of though: Perhaps octopus dont, or dont always fail the mirror test and what I read prior was incorrect. (I no longer have the source so I cant check.) Or perhaps Albert is just a very accommodating octopus, or managed to determine that the perceived nearby octopus was behind a sufficiently robust barrier to not be too bothered about it.

I think it was a good choice to make this a mirror box and not just surround the tank with mirrors. Not only do we get to see how the octopus reacts to mirrors on the inside, but the fact that it can leave and investigate the outside to figure out this mysterious box is interesting as well. You can just tell that it is trying to solve it.

I think this octopus was (at different times) checking out the box to see if it led to anywhere else, checking out the surfaces and comparing the mirror to the tank glass, and third checking the level of the reflection between the glass and the mirror. I think he enjoyed the box because he enjoys being himself and has no problem with what he seen in the mirror.

Hey Octolab, I'm a big fan of your channel and a big fan of the octopus as well! I wanted to make a request and see how an octopus would react to various toys for babies? Maybe things like rattles or one of those plastic dashboards that have different knobs and widgets? Knowing that the octopus is an animal known for it's intelligence and abilities to assess situations analytically, I think it would be really cool to see how one might react to items that are designed to invoke curiosity among babies and infants in humans....My hypothesis is that toys and gadgets designed to foster curiosity and interaction in babies/infants might garner some interesting results with the already child-like curious nature of the octopus as well. I think a rattle or maybe one of those small colorful xylophones would be cool as hell to see how an octopus would react. I'll leave the request open to interpretation in terms of safety, since that is not my area of expertise and I don't them to hurt themselves, but maybe a baby toy exists out there that an octopus can safely play with for our viewing entertainment. :D Thanks for your channel and your continued pursuits at letting us have a peak into the fascinating world of a fascinating creature.

We can’t know, but we have catalogued enough octopus behaviour to get an idea of what he’s DOING-from that we might extrapolate a bit of what he’s possibly thinking. Whenever I want to sort what an octopus is thinking, i first decide whether the behaviour is emotionally or rationally motivated.Yes, of course there are usually elements of both, but I try to figure out how the behaviour fits in with the cephalopod mind’s most powerful drives. Here’s an excerpt from my own writing on the subject: ‘The most powerful forces at work in the mind of a cephalopod-like an octopus-stem from an internal conflict between its awareness of its own vulnerability, its awareness of its own ingenuity, experience, and capabilities, and its curiosity/desire to expand its experience/desire to become smarter. ‘’I like to think of these as the ‘Three Hearts Of the Cephalopod Mind’. All information the ceph perceives goes to bolster one or more of these three knowledge centres, and thus all of its future behaviours. This is one of the primary contributors to the individuality we see in cephalopod personalities.’

It's interesting to see how he is scoping out the inside, then seems to wonder why the same kinds of walls as his tank don't react the same way. He checks back outside the box, nope, it isn't the same. He goes back in to see his reflection all around, then tries to see if the outside of that box will reflect too. Nope, it doesn't. Then he goes back inside the box, perhaps b/c he likes to look at himself by now? He was really figuring it out.

I don't know if you have done this before - but it would be interesting to give this octopusxa "self awareness " test like they do with chimps and elephants. Place something on the octopus that is safely removable, then put him/her in the mirror box and see if he/she realizes it is her/him and removes the item.

Albert? Yeah, it fits. Slip into the box- octos in front of him, behind him, and beside him. Behind the one to his side is a door that looks out at something just like his space. So he looks around the box, no one is there, so he stops half in. He sees half an octo in front, and behind, and the beside him is doing the same thing, but there is no half an octo outside. By Neptune, I think he's got it. I don't know if he knows its him, and I cant think of a way to do the normal self awareness testing on an octopus, but it's probably better than 50-50 since he can see his actions copies by the other "other octopi", and 100% he knows what is in the mirror won't get out.

This has probably been asked before, but I'm wondering about some of the specifics regarding your octopus. Where and how did you obtain it... are you required to obtain a special license the way people need to get when keeping a falcon or some other exotic or wild animal? What are the parameters of the water where it's kept with regard to temperature, salinity, and acidity? And lastly, does it ever try to escape the tank?

The red colour is what happens when a neutrally pale yellowish octopus passes into an area lit by pink lights. Curiously, this octopus showed minimal emotion whilst analysing this phenomenon-this was a deeply logical problem, and he tackled it with almost pure reason. This is quite honestly one of the most impressive examples of octopodean problem-solving I’ve seen in a 22-year career of cephalopod study.
