Having a great battle system and a 3 hour demo was a good call on the dev's part. I'm usually not even into turn based RPGs (except for the Mario and Luigi series), but once I understood how this one works I knew I had to get this game and experience combat with a full party.

Also of note, is the way each story is broken up into chapters, each taking an hour or so to accomplish. This made a big difference to me. RPGs can often feel overwhelming with the amount of things that need to be done or where to go. I liked being able to pick up and put down this game an hour or two at a time.

This game may honestly be my favorite of all time. During my initial playthrough I couldn’t put it down. The characters, music, visuals, and battle system all combine into a complete gem of a game. I found the storytelling to be refreshing, and when it all comes together at the endgame it was so worth it. Also, Tressa is the best char, free.

Octopath Traveler is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. I put 120+ hours into it and now that I have fully completed it, I still want to go back and play it again (I will do so after playing Zelda). The stories could have been more intertwined, sure, but I felt that it was pretty cool having 8 individual stories to complete in one game.

Awesome video. Even with all the games that came out this year including DQ11. Octopath Traveller is my GOTY for 2018. Beside from the lack of interaction with characters and the final dungeon being stupidly hard to find. The music, graphics, battle system and the individual stories are amazing (well most of the stories). The bravely team is the only team I care about right now in square.

@Ewolf5150 To me beside from Alfyn's and H'aanit's story being dry I loved them all. Especially Primrose's and Therion's. I love Dragon Quest XI but the first half of the game was really basic, the MC ruined all the emotional scenes with his blank stare and the post game which ruined the entire story for me.
@ff10fire6666 жыл бұрын
@Ewolf5150 for me it was the otber way round. With DQ11 it started out fine but it went on and on and on. It felt like it never wanted to end. I put in 110 hours in dq11 when I finally beat it. The main game I loved it's the post game that made me tired of this game. It made everything I done in those 80+ hours feel pointless. I know people will say just play the main game but you need to play the post game to get the full story and true final boss. (Which was perfect cell in a helmet). To me octopath flew by and beside from the final boss I never grinded.

I do absolutely love this game but there are a few things that I've thought would be nice to add, looking back at when I first played it. One such thing would be making the minimap a bit more useful as it's more of just a waypoint pointer in a black space which just feels a bit off-putting, having a proper little map there of the area would've been so nice. The stories all being their own separate thing is also sliiightly disappointing. The stories themselves were all great (and Tressa's was so heartwarming) but it doesn't feel right having your party go through this ordeal, a huge boss fight, only for the game to then act like the main character of that story just did it on their own. Lastly, the final area put me off from finishing the game, as I took it on while (debatable) being under-prepared and under leveled for some of my party members. This meant that after I went through the whole boss rush and then got wiped out by the final boss I'd have to reload a save from before I entered that last area to grind, knowing that I'll have to return to do the boss rush again. All in all, I still absolutely loved the game... but I'd say that DQ11 is a bit better, cuz I love me some character interactions.

I wish I could have been so positive about this game. I really love the music and graphics, and the presentation in general was just unbelievable, however, I felt the battles went on for way too long. The chapters went on for way too long. The story was generally forgettable, and I am rarely cared about any of the characters. The music, on the other hand was such high-quality, and the battle themes were super catchy… However, I do think the second battle theme long stayed out its welcome. Great song but just so much of it. I got to the main credits for my main quest, but didn’t get the final ending of the game because at that point I was just ready to move on. I am excited for future games in the style, but the only thing I hope they do better is with the maps in the field. So many times, I couldn’t tell where I was going, there were things obstructing my view and navigating dungeons was incredibly frustrating. I’m excited to see how this style of graphics improves in the future with games like Dragon Quest 3. Great review though, I do have love for this game, however, at the end of the day, I could never ever see myself revisiting it.

I find it odd that the final boss can only be reached by doing certain side quests first, which mean you must know exactly where they are and what to do. The last guy is tough, but honestly, since there's no trophy or achievement to get upon beating him, I find little point in doing it. I hope there'll soon be a title as beautiful as Octopath Traveler but with a more traditional story.
@modestyblaise41676 жыл бұрын
Very well written and presented review, Derek. Just a couple of things. As I’m not fully sold on the game’s art work, I heard that there are some customisation options (bloom, depth of field, vignette, etc). Is that so? Also, you mention all random battles are tough. How so? Are they longer than the norm? Is it possible to over level or does the game feature level scaling? Great to see a few shelves up and stacked with games. Keep up the good work.
@myhr23206 жыл бұрын
About the battles, I wouldn't say they're hard, and you can over-level, but the way the game is balanced, in order to make real damage to the enemies, you have to break their defenses first. So to simply dispatch them without caring for the weakness system, you have to be more over-leveled than in other games. It's doable, you can just spam strong aoe attacks until everything dies, but just making basic attacks to win a battle will take a looooooot of time, unless you're roughly 30 levels higher than the enemies. Octopath Traveler is the first J-RPG where I sometime use the "Flee" option, because some fights are just not worth the trouble, or to speed up exploration sometimes. There is no penalty for it, and it's quite reliable against same/lower level enemies, so why not? It's actually a useful option in this game.
@SuperDerek6 жыл бұрын
I didn't see any visual options, but I also didn't go looking for any. Enemy encounters are tough because enemies also have a guard/break system, and you need to exploit their weaknesses in order to deal full damage. Blindly mashing the A button will likely result in minimal damage being dealt, meaning you have to strategize each fight. Choosing when to expend your boost points also adds a new dimension of thinking for longer fights. :)

My only gripe with the game is that it gives you the illusion of choice. picking any 4 and keep playing. the truth is, due to the playes social actions one ends up using either party member that have that interaction. for example, is not optimal to have tressa and therion, ophilia and primrose, haanit and olberic or alfin and cyrus on the same party. a as they have the same interactions with the difference that one is garanteed, but level locked, and the other is base on chance, with the penalty of losing reputation if you fail, which is pointless if you save before attempting it. It would have been better if the secondary job would also give you the social interaction as well. that way I would have a reason to mix and match even better.

I still have yet to pick this one up. I love the graphics, but I tried the demo and the battle system seemed a bit much for me. One of my pet peeves in RPGs are battle systems with unnecessary bloat. While I've seen people who say they like this, because adding more complexity to executing a attack makes it more interesting to them, the opposite is true for me. It felt like a game with a complex battle system with simple results. I like Chrono Trigger best, a simple battle system with complex results. But those graphics are so sweet, that I might just choke down that large pill just to play a game with them.

Character zero interaction even when their party member meet with life and death situation is really unnatural and stupid. There is a scene when a character got stab. What are other party members doing ? Let her bleed to death? Then appear some Banter scene. Come on!! Banter is just a cheap shot at giving false illusion of interaction but doesn't has any impact on the overall story. And at the end, all 8 characters plot doesn't have direct connection. Then what brings them together ? Might as well let random villager woman looking for her son into the party. Why these specifically 8 characters ? Makes no difference.their plot and life are not link anyway. Every chapter is mindless and repetitive. Jus go to some spot mark on map then follow cutscene. Sucks.
