I love that Bond doesn't even need to look at the dice to know it's a double six. Moore was fantastic in this scene.

Bond using Kamal Khan's 'Lucky' dice never gets old. It's still one of my favorite 007 scenes.

What kind of low life is Kamal Kahn to be a rich man cheating at Backgammon? Such a strange scene how Bond decides to instantly make an enemy of Kahn right off the bat by flat out advertising that he (Bond) has the real Faberge egg and making a fool out of Kahn the cheater with his own phony dice thus provoking Kahn into sending assassins to kill him. He really wanted to surprise Kahn on his own turf right off the bat.

I just geeked out, and checked exchange rates for 1983. The game was for 200,000 Indian Rupees. In 1983 that was $20,790 US and if your UK that's £12,890. It never occurred to me to check this little detail before.

Bond was a role that only 2 so far have been proven to be born to play: Moore and Connery. If only to give us reasons to debate over exactly how the role should be played, since their styles differed enough to be interesting, though they shared a few similarities to make it even more intriguing. The iron hand inside of the velvet glove approach, plus the detective skills are but two examples. Don't get me wrong, Brosnan and Craig were both very good, Lazenby was perhaps the best fighter, and Dalton probably didn't get enough of a chance to establish himself. Having said that, nobody does it better than the Bond films from Dr. No to Octopussy (we're not counting NSNA or AVTAK, as much as I sometimes enjoy the latter). R.I.P., Sirs Roger and Sean, in no particular order.

200,000 rupees is equivalent to $2,398 US dollars in 2024. The purchasing power of $2,398 in 2024 would have equaled to roughly $7,535 in 1983, the year this movie was released. So at best, this was a $7,500 dollar bet, which makes me wonder how hard times must have been for the Major, who thought that amount too expensive for him to continue the game.
@chossy9116 ай бұрын
@@compazine at the time (1983 ) 200k rupees was about 20k USD. 20 thousand dollars was quite a lot in the context that most people in India likely made less than 1000 dollars per year in 1983. 🤑
