@@bliglum The Oculus Quest is shaping up to be an amazing system. It looks like it will have fantastic games, it will play very well, and it will revolutionize the industry. Just don't try to claim it is something it is not. What he asked for was the *same* strength in graphics and power. Oculus Quest runs on a 2 generation outdated mobile processor and it shows with many of the games, PC VR runs on high end dedicated graphics hardware not limited by small size, heat or energy consumption which can outdo said processor by thousands of times if pushed to its max. A lot of current VR titles don't really punish the PC hardware but in the future the Quest won't be able to keep up with certain high end titles. Stormland and Asgard's Wrath, 2 Rift S launch titles, come to mind immediately for example. There's also a huge space limitation given the Quest's absolutely tiny storage space, if we start to see bigger, more "full" experiences which closely mirror flat/pancake games, the Quest won't keep up or run these games nearly as effectively. All you will do by trying to tell people the Quest is way *more* than it is in reality is hurt the product.

Nice wrap up. Dk2 and CV1 early adopter here - I'm really hoping all these changes will be improvements or at least not negatives . Having suffered he audio out problem myself I can understand them going for the KISS principle to make the audio more robust . The sound on GO is really good and I like the added feeling of knowing I can still have some external awareness if it cuts through . I'm feeling very positive about Rift S. The GO shows a massive reduction in SDE so I'm really looking forward to how good things will look in Rift S with some SS to take advantage of the extra resolution .

@@thehumblewolf WMR = Windows Mixed reality. It is a set of VR Headsets which run of the Windows 10 WMR API designed by Microsoft for the mid-range budget side of PCVR. Still has full functuality of steamVR and uses the power of your pc but they are a lot cheaper than the rift/vive/pimax top range HMD. The tracking and general specs are usually inferior although in cases like the odyssey+ the screen is one of the best above the top tiers. Search them up. Also the issue with an LCD panel is primarily the huge lack in colour quality. The normal rift and vives have OLED panels providing an almost perfect colour contrast and perfect black and whites. An LCD panel will create bluish whites and grainy blue blacks with slight colour bleed. Not great for immersion. Although the response time may be slightly better but not noticeable. There are other issues but those are the main ones.

@@Somtric I the quest alone will make VR big. The fact that the S doesn't even support thunderbolt just leads me to believe that it's just another first gen windows mixed reality headset with some extra sensors and a lower fps. They honestly shouldn't even have bothered, Imo. The average consumer will buy the quest 9/10 times because it's untethered and it's the right direction for the future for VR. If you want my honest opinion though Google's going to pioneer the future of VR if they pull their heads out of their STADIA. They can use the same streaming tech into a standalone VR headset and literally just put a nice wifi receiver and a really nice panel in a pair of swimming goggles and you'll have one of the most light weight VR gaming experiences and all you would need is a very decent internet connection.

As a rift owner, I'll pass. I prefer the sensors to be honest, as I shoot in a lot of directions where I'm not even close to looking while playing shooters. I prefered the headphones from the original rift as well, the go sounds great for smaller videos, but playing music left a lot to be desired. Also I really am dissapointed in them for giving a danm about the game link type c connector. This really could bring the technology forward, but they have to keep... this. I'm interested how the 80 Hz will feel. The 72 Hz from the go felt strange already. The rift s basicly looks like a wmr headset, sorry. Out of all options including wmr, vive etc I still prefer the original rift. The fit is perfect, the controllers are perfect, the adjustments for the lens distance is perfect, the upgrade I need is resolution. Thank you for the video, this indeed gave me all the information I need.

It's a device that is changing based on the info they've gained from selling to users (and not selling) and manufacturing products. They realized that OLEDs may be a little better, but not good enough to cost so much more. They realized outside in tracking was a little bit better, but not good enough to add so much cost and require people to setup beacons and use 3 extra USB hubs. They realized that 90Hz was a little bit better, but not good enough to require Rift S users to have higher recommended specs and split an already small user base. In return, they get to offer higher resolution to the same user base, a more comfortable halo strap, and they can probably start to make a profit off of their sales. You can bet they were selling it at a loss since day 1. This makes a ton of sense from their end, we just have to be glad they're not abandoning consumer PC VR, like everyone else (WMR won't see many more updates and they've shifted to Hololens for enterprise, Vive has moved to enterprise prices as well with Vive Pro Eye etc).

I had huge problems with fogging on the rift until I replaced the foam with the interface you recommended which cleared the problem immediately. The rift s looks like a potential facial sauna at the moment which for me would make it a no brainer avoid. However, with that being said, I don't see a cheaper price to even offer this to the masses. It is a nice package for not having sensors and setting up anywhere. I, unfortunately, am prejudging this as a failure which is sad for me to say because I normally don't prejudge. I'm curious if you can wear the headset for any game and at minimum, simply be immersed in it and still use the keyboard and mouse to control what ever game you're playing. That being said, do you have to get VR specific games for it to work? And for the hell of asking, could the headset completely replace the need for a monitor at all?

Based on the name, and like you pointed out, it's obviously not a proper Rift 2. That said I think the Rift S will be great for people who want to get info PC tethered VR. I'll be waiting for what ever comes out next from Valve/HTC, however that's coming out. I also have an Oculus Go and love it. It's clearly entirely focused on reducing the barrier to entry. It's a modest upgrade in resolution and optics, but a downgrade in pretty much everything else. Even the tracking solution, though definitely more convenient, has more controller tracking deadspots. I'm glad that's their focus at the moment because that's the way to grow the user base. I just won't personally be 'upgrading' (really more of a sidegrade). I'll hold off for the real upgrade with eye tracking, foveatated rendering, significant resolution bump and varifocal lenses which I'm guessing is 2 years away.

Its still out of reach for most people because it requires a vr-ready PC. Not only do most people feel they can't afford one, they don't know how to use one, let alone, take care of it. @brickman409
@brickman409 5 жыл бұрын
This seems like 2 steps forward, and 8 steps backward. The choices made here are absolutely baffling. I'm sure it will be a decent headset, and the drop in refresh rate shouldn't be too noticeable, but the fact that we are getting a downgrade in that department at all is just unacceptable. It's been three years, if anything that should have improved. I was really expecting something like 120 hz. And not having that unified USB type C connector is also confusing. If they went with Type C, it would be extremely easy and cheap to convert to USB and HDMI/DP/whatever the hell you want. They could even throw an adapter in the box. Having display port instead of HDMI on the connector is also frustrating if you have a PC with an HDMI port in the front. Manufacturers put those ports on PCs almost specifically for the Rift and now the new Rift won't work with it. I know the cable will be replaceable, but you just know it's going to be a proprietary connector like on the current Rift, so you are going to have to buy an expensive ass cable that you can only get from Facebook. Kind of a pain in the ass just for the convenience of not having to connect your new rift to the back of your PC.(although tbf you can just get an HDMI to DP adapter for like $5 on Amazon, but still it's more shit to buy). Oh, and then the panel in the Rift S is going to be the same as the panel in the Go??? What the fuck is that about??? Why doesn't it have the same resolution as the Quest? They're both the same price and the Rift S doesn't have any processor in it or anything! If anything it should have a higher refresh rate version of the Quest panels. Well, at least they made my decision of whether to get the Rift S or the Quest a whole lot easier. And the old Rift will probably be a lot cheaper now too. Look at the bright side.

@@maskofman7350 Tbf I haven't tried the Go. I'm sure it's good, and true, it is higher resolution than the Rift. But still, it's not as good as the screen in the Quest. Considering that the Quest is the same price as the Rift S, there's no reason that the Quest should have a better screen. And there's no reason that the $400 Rift S should have the same screen as the Go which is half it's price. While the downgrade in refresh rate from the Rift to the Rift S may be minimal, and might not even be very noticeable, there is absolutely no reason there should be any downgrade at all. Like, that's not how technology works! Things should be getting better, not worse! Even if it is only slightly.

I'm hoping that the new S will sharpen up the text on games like XFlight so that it's easier to read the gauges and do instrument intensive flying that's required for IFR. I say this as it strikes me that the oculus go was an evolution of the Samsung Gear VR, which in turn spawned the quest, and from the specs the Rift S looks like a modified quest.

Wondering if prescription glasses designed to connect inside the Rift will be compatible with the S? How long will the rift be supported with software updates once S is released? If you could source answers to these questions I would appreciate it.

I’m glad I got the original rift for Christmas. Seems like the best rift in the lineup for me.

Look on the bright side of life. At least we know what S stands for. It's so obvious now: Oculus S(hit) Augustus once said: "I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble." Mark Zuckerberg can now proudly paraphrase his quote: "I bought Oculus a company of marble and left it as the company of Shit."

Does this tracking work in the dark? with the oculus rift and sensors you can game in total darkness. I will probably stick with my oculus until a 2.0 comes out.

Yes it works in the dark. The cameras utilise IR tracking allowing for a gaming in total darkness to be played.

Sera Phina but didn’t oculus go sales exceeded all expectations? Why would they have a stockpile?

@@I-Know-Best Maybe what they're saying and what they initially thought are two different things? Why are they putting inferior panels in their new enthusiast headset? Their portable Quest has better panels, even though it's an android device.

funny because Go sold more than Rift, and literally everyone says that its display is better
@stranger.granger
@stranger.granger 5 жыл бұрын
@@maskofman7350 it's an 80hz LCD. sure, lower screen door effect. But the original rift has a diagonal screen door effect that to me gives it more of an antialiasing effect making the image look less pixelated. Which is why I prefer my oculus rift over my vive, because vive looks so pixelated in comparison. Also, people are saying the Rift S has a slightly lower FoV than the original Rift (even though oculus said 'slightly higher'). FoV is very important for immersion. This is not an upgrade.

Disappointing. Invest in the technology with true AAA titles and cutting edge hardware, Oculus. I'm a Rift owner looking for a real upgrade; this isn't it.

it would interest me if they'll have an optional wifi connector like the Vive does? I mean like do they want to keep this option open with the new headset or will it deffinatly be cabled throughout the coming generation?
