Sound is weird on this video

This video understates the finger sensing by the controllers. I tested one out at best buy. Rather than "play" a game I spent my time testing the accuracy of responses and placement. The placement of the virtual hands and fingers in your view is spot on. It simulates more than just whether your fingers are curled or extended. It also can tell the placement of your fingers and thumbs hovering over each button. So when it says press X you instinctively look down at your hands. You can watch your virtual thumb slide over to the button in real time. It could tell the hovering distance above the X Y A B buttons as far as an inch and a half. More than you would every reach for a button. I haven't tried a vive but if it doesn't have this then it might be a deal breaker. Also in case anyone was wondering; I don't have binocular vision meaning my right eye doesn't look where my dominant left eye is looking. Lots of people have this problem. While I personally can see out of both eyes my depth perception is off. Despite this the 3D effect still worked perfectly for me. If you have the same problem then it is not a show stopper.

When I was playing earlier I noticed that with shooting games like Super Hot the controllers arent quite as precise as Vives wands and I often lost tracking when trying to pick things up off the floor. The Touch controllers are pretty good but not having a built in rechargeable battery was disappointing and they felt cheaply made. I am very excited for the new Vive controllers next year that they showed off at Steam Dev Days, being able to physically let go of your controller will add so much to immersion.

Wow, I'm glad I sold my Vive. Even though I'm not getting Oculus Rift anytime soon, it looks great for people like me who have under room scale play area. The hand gestures seem more natural (though Vive could still be better in terms of gun or sword types games due to the weight) Plus you can change the battery unlike the Vive's are built in and gonna die at some point.

ParanoidPixel The problem with haptic feedback gloves is that you won't actually be holding anything in real lifelike you would in a game. A sword, a flashlight, a gun for all of these things you'll just be awkwardly making that shape with your gloved hands which will be completely immersion breaking.
@ParanoidPixel
@ParanoidPixel 7 жыл бұрын
DucksDoctor We can already simulate resistance through a variety of methods, creating artificial muscles. We already do this in robotics. With the addition of haptics the simulation wouldn't have to be very strong. Your brain should fill in the gaps. At the very least the point of entry into creating artificial rigidity would be very low.
@DucksDoctor
@DucksDoctor 7 жыл бұрын
ParanoidPixel Fair point, but this isn't something that just haptic gloves can offer. This is something only available in labs in a very specific use case scenario and it's purely experimental. It definitely will not be available in the consumer space for years to come. There are some haptic gloves available for vive though (the caveat being that they are still under R&D) check out ManusVr if you're interested.

Thomas Negrete consider this, you go the same distance as you would with a cable, and all it does is prevent your feet from feeling a cable, is it that big of a deal? no, is it worth the price? Hell no. Would I buy it if it were like $10 sure. but the fact of the matter is wireless affects vr about as much as a wireless controller affected xbox, (vs wired) Not a huge difference.

the prob with the rift is that its already out of date, eye tracking is gonna make vr look better and require drastically less gpu power. star vr is coming out spring time with 5k eye tracking and 240 fov which is gonna make vr headsets now look like junk. also alot of other vr headsets are going to have eye tracking.

I played both the vive and oculus before deciding to buy the oculus. I still don't know if I made the right choice, or if there really is one. There are some vive games I want to play that are vive only, which I didn't really pay attention to until after I purchased my oculus. So that I regret, and hope they become cross platform compatible. But the controllers for the rift feel more natural and less "controller" like. It feels more natural to hold. The other thing is the store where I tested the Vive, wouldn't let me put my glasses in the Vive and try wearing it. So with me being near sighted it was like, "cool, I'm in a video game! Blind!" So knowing that my glasses fit the Rift was nice. IDK how many usb ports the Vive requires, but the Rift takes 3 (headset, and both sensors) and they say the ports should be USB 3.0. I rebuilt my computer using my old case, so the new MoBo has two 3.0 slots and one 3.1 which is currently occupied by my wireless internet receiver. The USB ports on the front of my case are 2.0 (I bought this case in 2008, still going strong). So the headset is in one 3.0 slot and one sensor is in the other. The second sensor is in a USB 2.0 slot and has worked fine. So far I am happy with my purchase, it is super impressive technology. I just wish there was a more substantial list of games for these things (I want a good strategy game so bad). But these are the early days, and those are always the most painful for new gaming platforms. So if you're wanting one of these, I would hold off awhile longer until the game libraries develop further.

Cam On the vive only games, you can play them if you have touch controllers. Just install steam and steam VR and run the room setup (make sure you either have 3 sensors or opposite corner 2 camera setup) and you can play any steam VR game even if it only has the vive support listing.

falcon9gxgc, let's also add to the list better resolution per eye (or at least RGB subpixel arrangement), 120 fps with adaptive sync. And to trump it all: wireless. There is a Vive kit that makes it wireless and adds about 16ms to response times, but vive+ good headphones + that kit = 1kg on the head

Hahahaha! Hilarious. If you want room scale like the Vive has except with less-than-laser tracking, You need 3 cameras. So.. $280. 4 cameras? $360. And don't forget to buy a USB 3 pcie card to power those 3-4 if your motherboard doesn't have that many ports left over. Oh... and batteries. lots and lots and lots of batteries. Or rechargeables and a charger. Extra cords, USB3 hub, batteries, charger... what are we up to now? And the tracking isn't as good. And doe these not have haptic feedback like the Vive or do they? Its really cool. I'll just plug my Vive controllers in and recharge them while you're thinking about it.

Lock down their platform? youve got to be kidding me. Oculus has done more for VR and to push it forward than any other company in the world. Do you realize that they are funding a TON of these games made by other studios ? who otherwise would not be making VR content. Oculus is singlehandedly pushing VR farther constantly. And for everything they give, do they ask for permenant exclusivity? NO. They dont even Lock it down... They ask for an initial launch period where the game is exclusive to Rift. Lets be perfectly clear, this is NOTHING like what microsoft and sony do, where they literally pay a third party company to keep their games off of a competing platform. What Oculus has been doing is completely or largely funding games by these developers, and asking absolutely no profit in return. On top of that, they make their engineers and in house devs available to these teams and help them with troubleshooting and technical problems that arise in VR. They simply ask for their games to be launched FIRST on their platform, after a period time they are free to launch their games elsewhere... So, yeah before shooting off from the mouth, you really should do some research.

From the looks of it, that wire coming out from oculus seems way too annoying...I guess, I will sit this out for atleast 2 more years from now.
@Nerdule
@Nerdule 7 жыл бұрын
It's really, really hard to get rid of the wire. You need extremely high bandwidth to stream high-resolution video, and you need really, *really* low latency in order to avoid nausea. Not to mention, driving the display takes a fair amount of power. That said, there's a lot of interesting development going on in this area, so while I'd be a little skeptical it's possible that 2 years from now really is about the right timeframe. And the cable really isn't that bad. I've tried the Vive and it doesn't take long before you stop noticing it.
@PrakashKalapala
@PrakashKalapala 7 жыл бұрын
Eldritch Yup, I truly understand it's need here. Even I also believe that it's not going to vanish just like that in just mere two years. Especially considering the fact that just now in this quarter only the very first commercial VR release has released to the masses. And it would certainly take an huge amount of effort to not only bring new features but to also polish the older one; including this wire too. P:S; Except from Gear VR and Google's Cardboard, I haven't actually had an real opportunity to play with these advanced VR headsets. So, my observations are largely are based on the blogs and KZbin reviews. So, there's that.

voice audio sounds muffled, FYI no platform war? then how else would you describe oculus pushing developers to sell two versions of their games? one on the oculus store that ONLY works with oculus, and another version of the same game on steam that ONLY works with vive? oculus platform war 2.0 is what i call this nonsense... :/ and im surprised nobody mentioned that most oculus touch games were developed for vive and ported over, or, even worse, were delayed or even canceled for vive after oculus threw a ton of money at the devs to make it an oculus touch exclusive or time exclusive. and then everybody ends up calling the oculus touch games "more refined" than vive games, even though theyre literally made for vive and just ported to oculus touch? sad... sorry but thats really bad reporting and journalism... was hoping for more from the verge than a third party comercial and thumbs up for oculus touch... this is the oculus rift as it was meant to be? hmmmm im pretty sure luckey didnt have plans for motion touch controllers from the start

From what others have said, the oculus rift and touch isn't nearly as a immersive as the vive. In the oculus, you don't get to walk around and are limited to either standing or sitting. If you drop something in job simulator, and try to pick it up, you'll lose tracking.

While Oculus just released their motion controller, Vive already went to cable free.

The way things have ended up - with one always a half-step behind the other - seems in many ways like the best possibility. First Oculus had the better headset, but Vive was the only one with controls ... now, for the moment, Oculus is ahead, but before their next release Vive's going to leapfrog them, and then Oculus will release their next generation to leapfrog Vive ... competition like this is the best possible situation for VR. If one of them 'wins', we all lose, because then we'd be dealing with a monopoly on PC VR.

Ture though, it's probably the best for VR. As customers however, if we want to have the ultimate VR experience , we probably have to buy both Oculus and VIve just someone have both PS4 and Xbox one.

Too little, too late. Years ago I thought Oculus would lead the VR era. In reality it looks like they will always be playing catch up. I guess that's what they get for rushing to market with an inferior product and attempting to make the rift platform a walled garden. Vive > Rift
@zman948
@zman948 7 жыл бұрын
Smoke Away They're not playing catch up. Unlike the Vive they spent time developing and perfecting their controller. It's not like they spent all of these months just to be on the same level as the Vive. They spent it to be higher than The Vive. Now Vive needs to catch up

Wrong. Vive is for people who wanted a rushed unfinished product with less research and development. oculus is for a more finished and polished product higher end quality and better features.
@Aunubus69
@Aunubus69 7 жыл бұрын
its still a rushed unfinished product which is why they are making a new one already to try and perfect them. Not to mention htc was a business that was going under. It was only the rushed vive that kept them going. Their shares was going down and they was going to shut doors. Which is why the vive was released in its current state.

Master Anubis Vive has 4 years of development behind it, the concept started in valves room back in 2012 they shared what they had with oculus before it was bought out by Facebook. At which point HTC and valve partnered up. There is no conceivable way that vive is unfinished. The fact that it came to production so fast after a reveal is because oculus did not have a proper manufacturing plant (which is where the component delay came from) while HTC is an international electronics manufacturer. Also vive will not save HTC, they have only one vr product on the shelves unlike their phone business. They have no reason to rush their only and first vr product because producing a terrible one will shoot them in the foot. Also there isn't anything that the oculus rift features that the vive didn't already own other than software exclusivity and that's because they refuse to play oculus is game. Including games that HTC themselves are funding. Finally the vive offers roomscale tracking at a larger range than the rift with only 2 trackers while the rift requires 3 plus usb cords leading from the cameras to the pc. On top of that the vive has a camera built in to the HMD for extra safety it is very clear that from the ground up the entire kit was designed to do roomscale, sitting, and standing from the very beginning. While the rift started as seated with a gamepad then with touch turned into standing, now it can do roomscale with 3 trackers. One of those 2 is clearly more refined for a roomscale vr experience and it isn't rift.
