I am consistently delighted with how candid Carmack is allowed to be in these talks. Samsung won’t even allow him to say how many gearvrs shipped, but fb lets him openly admit embarrassing aspects of existing products and failures that otherwise are not public. It really shows how much respect he carries within the org and the community.
@kipp145 жыл бұрын
The reason he's allowed to is that it helps the entire ecosystem to become better. Most of what he speaks on is technical problems that are common to come across day to day

It's probably a clause in his employment contract, remember Oculus got bought, he got a shitload of money, he's still working there probably because he has to fullfill a contract, but he has his conditions otherwise he wouldn't sign it, I suspect he basically demands give me right to talk way more openly or else I'm going somewhere else.

I imagine that since the entire event takes place over two days, people's schedules are pretty packed. That and, there's tens of other talks that need the same stage... The church of Carmack continues to congregate regardless though. I wonder if anyone recorded it this year.
@DanielLiljar5 жыл бұрын
@@goop_lord Would think that by now they would learn to schedule differently. It's not their first event anymore, and yea would have loved to see a recording of the of stage talks as well. They should just make it into an entirely separate entity and record it in parallel.

As someone that has a Rift CV1, a Galaxy S6 based GearVR (on headset trackpad) and a Galaxy S9 based GearVR(controller), the primary pain point on the S9 based GearVR, is that the controller touch pad is ALL backwards compared to what you'd expect, it needs a basic Invert control mode, also there is a missed opportunity to treat it like a dpad.
@HatedJared5 жыл бұрын
Carmack is the kind of guy, where you are pissed at your Oculus for running out of battery, or having some weird graphical glitch, and you hear him go "yeah, its not ideal but it was the best tradeoff because X would have happened otherwise." Wi-Fi can be extremely fast when done right. Essentially it's designed to trade performance for reliability. One of the biggest problems is backwards compatability in the 802.11 standard. Your brand new Wi-Fi router ships with compatibility back to 1997 switched on. You and your neighbours then compete for airtime and bring each down. Does every PC still ship with PS2 and parallel ports?
@yrebrac5 жыл бұрын
Also re JC's comments at 1:23:00, yes you can tune your Wi-Fi, but it's a shared medium, you will always be severely impacted by your neighbours running in '1997 compatible mode'. In a sense everyone's Wi-Fi needs to change to get the full benefits of the latests modes in the standard.

33:16 - "Nobody's going to buy something that they regret buying or have to file a refund or that leaves a bad taste in their mouth" - exactly how I feel about buying a rift-s following OC6 which could not have been more clear that the Quest is the sole focus for development and the rift-s has been left to rot. If I had known of Oculus Link and hand tracking 4 months ago (which Oculus clearly knew was coming) there is no chance I would have gone for a rift s over Quest.

Fix Quest comfort, Carmack. Battery in the back.
@Alexander_Of_Pines5 жыл бұрын
he actually brought that up, said that he was surprised how much complex that would make it be by adding a few wires and possible compromises, they went with most solid solution as all components is close to each other but they search for better designs, also he said about people question him about battery size and comfort, that people want long lasting battery and comfort but bigger battery worsens the comfort and lightweight headset is superb at comfort but battery wont last an hour. So as I understood it - current quest is "best of the worst" idea they had. Good guy tho, it was truly interesting speech , direct and honest.
@mamefan5 жыл бұрын
@@Alexander_Of_Pines Yes, I'm saying they should have gone with the more difficult, more expensive option because all of the weight in the front is terrible.
@Alexander_Of_Pines5 жыл бұрын
@@mamefan I do agree fully, my first days of using Quest made some good and painful marks on my face, today I know how to make it more comfortable and actually it seems like face skin can get used to it if you use Quest often and lessens the effect, probably making it same design as Rift S would be great with batter at the back or on top of your head. Well maybe next iteration will be better, for now I think its pointless to ask them fix it, its not gonna happen, some cheap accessories ,like a strap or something, to help with weight distribution would be great to have.

When you want to have a keynote speaker, the list is very short. Some has died like Steve Jobs who was amazing to explain things in layman tens and vision future products. And then there is ones like Carmack who will keep you listening everything and he can feed complex technical topics early and effectively and he is the visionary with technology. But what Oculus is now doing, it looks like people should return their Rift S and get something else if you have PC. Otherwise get a Oculus Quest and be happy for lower tier games.
