Is This the Easiest Furnace Upgrade? How to Make Furnace/Forge Hotter.

Few moths ago I made a furmace from junk on my main channel "Odd Tinkering" ( • How I turned TRASH int... ). It was a very simple design and good for casting aluminum and other metals with low melting point. However I wanted to power it up so it can easily melt copper, brass and other common casting metals. I won't even try to melt iron this time because it will need some more upgrades, but making my own cast iron items would be really cool. Previously had never measured 1000 °C with the furnace and my previous attept at melting copper failed barely. This time I was able to get it to melt but it wasn't enough for proper casting the copepr would cool way too fast and it woudn't set to the bottom of my mold.
In order to make the furnace hotter I have 2 options. Make my burner more powerful or to reduce the loss of heat in the process. The higher the temperature difference between the furnace and the outside, teh faster it cools down. At some point the furnace reaches the point where the heat from the burner equals the heat loss of the forge. Then the temperature stops rising and once you shut the burner the temperature cools rapidly. I decided to try to a product I found. It is called ITC 100HT. On the internet I red peoples experiences and some said the y had got their forge even 200 °C hotter with it. The product is a ceramic coating that will reflect the heat back instead of letting it escape. The coating will also help to reduce damage to the fire wool making it last longer. Because the heat is reflected back it might also help to keep the furnace hotter if I have to open the lid.

You can preheat your molds to ensure no moisture is present when pouring. This is likely what caused your mini explosion.

Yes it was actually snowing a bit when I started but it had stopped at that point but probably a flake or two had landed on the mold which caused that

Always heat your Mold before pouring the liquid copper not to get any surprise by splashing. And take on safer shoes. Yours will burn very fast & well...

Good to see how well it worked. I would treat your Koawool with rigidizer though for your safety and also to stop bits flaking off. Kaowool once in the lungs stays there forever.

what type of wool is that as if its k-wool then the main concern is that the individual fibres are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and possibly lead to the development of lung cancer

This is kinda a guess but the reason it stuck to the mold is probably because there was a small amount of water in there which is why it did a splatter when pouring but I could be wrong keep up the awesome videos

Now that you mention it, I think there was a tine bit of snowing before I did the pour so that is definitely possible.

I made one from a beer keg, with a single torch and it had no problem melting an entire 3kg copper statue and keeping liquid enough for pouring

I think you should angle the inlet so it swirls around the crucible, rather than hitting it straight on and then heading straight out the top.

I think one big issue is the size of your forge, it's got a lot of volume, and so it'll be a lot harder for the one torch to heat everything up to snuff. Unless you really need a big crucible, you shouldn't use one.

you have to bend the flame insertion .. so that a vortex is created inside, to increase the heat

Hope you didn't spend too much on that high-temp coating. $0.20 of clay + others would have achieved the same thing. Also, try spraying the 1st coat next time - might have been a little tricky in the tight space, but easier. Also, use a drill attachment to mix the coating, unless you like squishing it in your hand.

Looking at the ingot you made, it looks like there's a few tiny dents in it. Maybe the mould wasn't completely smooth, and the copper got stuck on a tiny indent. Or the coating on the metal did something to make it stick or something like that. Anyway, nice video! Reminds me of the old King of Random forge videos.

some improvements you can try : - give an angle to the torch income to create a whirlpool in the furnace, the flow of heat will stay longer inside - make an inside wall of heat refractory and heat resistant stuff, the mix of "ceramic" is too thin

I've watched a few videos on making a furnace. Almost all of them use a powdered coating called "Satanite." Might want to look into that. I believe I is more of a paste than what you were using

Your furnace is huge compared to the crucible. Make a smaller furnace and you will be able to get it hotter. Also, copper is hard to cast, use bronze (copper and tin)

I didn't know if I will need all of it. If I needed only half of it I could then use the other half later for something. That tiny bucket costs something like $60. You will save that sum in gas etc pretty fast but still I don't want to waste half of it
