Since that first week of the new HTB it has significantly been forgotten. Felt like that first week everything as soon as tackled was either ball up or HTB. Now they are back to waiting for the tackle to either go to ground, an injury or just the ball to spill out, with it being so 50/50 again

3:30 if you watch it in slow mo he checks his kick when he realises that Howard has dove head first for the ball. Watch in slow mo, you can see as soon as he see's Howards going for a face first superman he checks (stops i.e. a baseball check swing)

7:15 perfect example of why not every tackle should be awarded a free kick. Sun's player didn't really have much prior, the ball spills out into play and both teams have a fair opportunity to contest it. Some tackles are simply to force the ball loose or make the opposition dispose of the ball. A second longer or an attempt to handball, break the tackle etc and I would agree but the player didn't have enough prior for Dixon to have been awarded a free kick. Sicilys is a perfect example of a free kick not paid, had prior, had an opportunity, and didnt dispose of the ball properly once tackled. Bad missed call.

You've actually got the rule a bit backwards in your mind... at least with the dixon one. Because Andrew made no genuine attempt to dispose of the football, it is holding the ball. The whole "knocked out in the tackle" interpretation is applied when the tackler physically makes contact with the ball itself, not the ball carrier. Regardless of all that, I'd say many would argue Andrew had prior opportunity anyways so HTB would still be correct.

Harry Jones had a clear mark for bombers that wasn't paid because the umpires thought Peter wright had hands on it. But the replay showed Jones was the only one to touch it. That was the only oddity other than terrible play in the bombers vs demons game.

i appreciate the umpire stuff. and i really like that you showed both sides. we all know that the umpiring has not been up to scratch. but its not any individual umpires fault. and i think its important to remember that the umpires love the game as much as the players, and just want to go out there, make the right calls and be a part of the AFL

The blame lays squarely with the AFL, so many umpire's on the field and not a season going by without a ton of rule changes. I think I heard that this year it was 29 changes.

Your call on Sicily of holding the ball is way off. He did have plenty of time to get rid of it but the Freo player just knocks the ball off his hand. By the time he actually tackled him the ball was gone.

With the Hoskin-Elliot one you missed the umpire yelling play on at him before he kicked it. The slip made it look like he was forced to rush as he expected to have a set shot. Not sure why it was play on.

It was Calsher Dear that touched Watson's kick at goal on the line. I am not convinced that he did touch it but it was an "umpire's call" who had called it touched and insufficient evidence. The oddest part is that is the second time he has touched one on the goal line from Watto.

4:40 2nd tackle is high from 35 10:30 it looks like he gets a sloppy hand to it, watch it half speed if you can't see it, there's defeinitely movement from the other hand at the ball when the ball comes out. I'm convinced umpires have had the holding the ball rule redacted from their copy of the rules.
