I have that Ray Anthony album @3:21. I like it a lot; listened to it within the past month or so. The Scotch 203 Dynarange - that's a "low noise" tape regarded as a significant step up from the (still good) ubiquitous Scotch 150.

14:47 It's a Sony ES Series CD player, CDP-C85ES, that was part of their top-of-the-line series, the wood panels are original. I have an entire stereo system made up of those all matching components. I'd say go grab it but I bet it's gone.

That's why I don't like these Archive Thriftings videos, we just see lots and lots of stuff we would like to get and he should get, but he never gets anything! In one store he just got a pack of VHS cases! What's the point of making these trips and then show them on YT? It's unintended trolling! I love this channel for the oddities and riffs. Thrifting videos, on the other hand, are just too common, totally out of place in a channel called Oddity Archive.

FM Is great. Nash the slash on electric violin ( years before Slash from GNR, this guy actually wore a top hat all the time too) the side B of black noise is excellent, at their best they are an excellent prog rock outfit. I recall city of fear was less great , cant recall if black noise is the album or just the song....

I'm guessing the album without a record inside could still be valuable to someone who would use the cover as a wall decoration, like a restaurant. You see all sorts of local stores or restaurants with a collection of odd stuff decorating the walls. It's too bad those portable TV's are basically big doorstops today. My parents owned one for years, and it came in handy for viewing things anywhere in the age of trash can-width TVs. Now it's useless since they got rid of analog TV. RIP T_T

14:45 -- That was a frequent occurrence on Sony's older ES stuff. I have a CDP-508ESD that I got at Goodwill (for $10... Score! -- But the remote cost me about $40 on eBay, so...) that came with the simulated wood panels (or 'sidewoods' as the label calls them)

Freberg's Son Donavan is the little Kid from the Encyclopedia Britannica Commercials.(The first one was filmed in September 1985 and has 13 year old Donavan with shorter hair and mid 80s Nerdy Gazelle Glasses, the later ones were filmed in Mid 1987 and had him as a Teenager with newer glasses, puberty voice and his Father doing the narration) I follow Donavan on Instragram. He's a Cool fellow. He's also a Photographer, and dates a young Middle Aged Emo gal who's also a Photographer and Burlesque Fashion Show Director.(She's cool too). kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaTFkGBtobmCnKs kzbin.info/www/bejne/rICVdZKprb10ja8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKbak3eImaiJqZI Donavan's Dad Stan, was also a successful Advertising executive in L.A. and wrote plenty of well known Commercial ads, from the Lays Bert "Cowardly" Lion Lahr as the Devil one, to the Odor Eaters one, to the 1983 Right Guard ad. Freberg did VOICE OVERS in ads too. Remember the 1978 Ginsu Knife ad? That was Stan's Voice!!!

The Car phone wasn't THAT early. Likely more from the tail end of the transportable era, they didn't start using grey backed LCD displays like that until later on. But it is from BEFORE Airtouch was absorbed into Verizon, which happened in 2000. So 97-99ish? Also, the network it worked on, AMPS, has been shutdown since 2008, so all you would get out of this anymore was a blinking "NO SVC" light.
@Tornado1994
@Tornado1994 6 жыл бұрын
1993 actually. I don't recall ANYONE using Car Phones by 1997. LCD Displays were introduced in Cell Phones in 1994. Flip up mini Mobile Phone were introduced in 1999. So its dated 1992-1993. About the same time PDAs like Apple Newton were being introduced.

They were still around. Not popular in the least, but in a lot of the more rural areas, you needed the 3watts of power these provided over the handheld .6 watt. They were also popular with the "I just want it for emergencies" crowd with plans that had a low monthly price and an insanely high per minute rate. Airtouch Cellular itself, didn't exist until 1994. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirTouch LCDs came to cell phones in 94, sure...But Motorola liked to use these displays that looked more VFD than LCD. (I think they were LCD, but used a backlit polarizing filter so they looked different) They didn't use the standard black on grey style LCDs on their car/transportable line of phones until the end.

I enjoy how you narrate these thrift haul videos. It reminds me of the Canadian fishing show Red Fisher. He would go fishing and film it on 8 mm film and narrate it in his "Scuttlebutt Lodge". The show was the direct inspiration for, The Red Green Show, a very popular comedy show. You may have caught it on your local PBS station.

Oddly enough, MLM organizations such as Amway often refer to their critics as "dream stealers," so my initial guess was that it was pyramid propaganda.

Peter Kier Me too! I always go to antique and thrift hunting for their stuff which is quite interesting. The R2R haul looks good, but Goodwill and Salvation Army stores doesn't carried these tapes until they need more. Or I go to eBay and get more of these so I can record OTR shows on my Concord 220T 2-track R2R tape recorder. The Edgar Winter Group album is still a classic featuring "Free Ride" and an instrumental rock classic "Frankenstein" are on the album. I was in Spike's record shop in Catskill and I saw the quadraphonic edition of the same album and it was an SQ encoded record which is not easy to find. There were so many SQ encoded albums during the 1970's and it does work with my Sony SQ Decoder SQD-1000 and it was excellent to 4 channels to hear.

I enjoy these 'thrift store' videos a very great deal--they deliver all the expectant enjoyment of a visit to a second hand shop without having to actually go and then be inevitably disappointed by what you find! Please continue the series wherever it is you eventually land. The name alone is amusing to someone who lives in England. These places would be called in polite company 'Charity Shops' or unfortunately in my area 'Pauper Shops'... Other than modern pawn brokers like 'Cash'-(or again, locally 'Gash')-'Generator' there really aren't any large chains dedicated to second-hand goods. The closest we have are outlets run by nationwide organizations like 'Oxfam' and 'Age Concern' who receive their stock as free donations--expect they often sell these goods at prices barely reduced from brand-new, especially the former outfit.
