The TV connection seems to have nothing to do with holding the CueCat device up to your TV screen to scan a barcode, but rather transmitting an encoded web site URL as a burst of digital data in the TV audio, which your sound card would decode into the URL. Which is ironic because that's basically the same method that some TV and radio stations used back in the 1980s to transmit computer programs on-air, which viewers/listeners could record to cassette tape and then play back into their computer's tape drive.

Funny thing was, you could find tons of RS-232 proper laser based Barcode scanners used on Ebay at the same time for only a few bucks more and they worked properly.

If I remember right, Jovan Hutton Pulitzer (formerly Jeffry Jovan Philyaw) was the inventor of the CueCat and introduced it on his talk show: Net Talk Live! That was broadcast out of Dallas, most likely on WFAA channel 8 (WFAA chief Meteorologist, Troy Duncan is in the CueCat CD rom video). The neat thing about Net Talk Live! was it claimed to be the first triple cast (TV, Radio, and Internet). They introduced the CueCat to the DFW area as a test bed before going public. It makes sense that Radio Shack got involved because of their HQ location in Ft. Worth. Also to note, the “cue” as in the red logo is a crescendo and you would hear a crescendo noise when the barcode would pop up on the screen.

20:03 thats david finfroc longtime meteorologist for WFAA in dallas texas. I had a cuecat and remember WFAA having cues during news broadcasts etc. I also went to radioshack about once a week so I ended up using one quite a bit. The main thing i remember was it was a shitty reader and usually took 3 or 4 scans to actually work. I also ended up sitting next to the tv with my talkboy trying to record the cue sounds so i could have more chances for the software to actually register it lol.

I still have mine sitting around somewhere - I 'declawed' it (as they said back then) and used it to scan barcodes for my video game collection, at least until I ended up buying a far faster, more accurate gun-style scanner. These days if I was still collecting, I'd just use an app on my phone, but a crappy scanner you could get from Radio Shack and jailbreak for free was just what a cheap guy fresh out of college needed for his barcode scanning needs.

It saved me typing in a lot of numbers. Blast from the past seeing Troy Dungan in one of those videos (the weather guy with the bowtie). He was the weatherman on WFAA in Dallas. There was actually at least a couple of programs in the early 2000's that would use a CueCat as the input. One was a Videotape-DVD library program, and the other was a CD library program (same company made both). With a jailbroken CC you could scan the bar code, and it would automatically look them up online then put all of the data relating to the video-disk into the database for you. It was kinda cool, and came out in 2001-2002 I want to say. I used it for a bit, but as I was adding easily a dozen DVDs a week back then, I quickly just gave up trying to catalogue them all.

I worked as a web developer at Kiplinger personal finance when this thing came out. The online editor had one. You could get one for free simply by going to their website, maybe you had to pay shipping. I forget the details. The editor and I played around with it but back in the early 2000s we couldn't get the print magazine people to take anything web related seriously. We still had an art department and an actual library with a full time librarian at the time. I mean, our art department had exacto knives, craft paper, light tables, drafting tables, etc. They were hard stuck in the print world. I never even knew about Forbes actually using the barcodes in their print magazine to link to online content. When we pitched that idea at Kiplinger it took off like a lead brick. It went nowhere.

That was always my problem, I bought a USB Cue:Cat in a thrift store to use on my old Titanium PowerBook G4 to scan all the barcodes for my video game and DVD collections. It didn't seem to scan anything, and the Mac software was just about non-existent and non-functional. Ooooh, I totally believe them when they say they really care about customer privacy. I totally do. I would never expect a glorified marketing company to be shady when it comes to data collection and handling. At 20:05, that's a local weatherman, that's a Dallas broadcast. I believe he came to my high school's meteorology class for a talk once.

All I can see is an emoticon for extremely sad plastered all over the package. Even the prompts they have in those text books somehow carry the connotation of "Ugh! Yep. You have to pull this thing out again. Sigh." And as far as their marketing department is concerned, were they trying to be ironic when they said that it's a "Capitalist tool?" Capitalist Tool sounds like an insult you give a business student frat boy.

What's wrong with using a 2011 MacBook online? I use a 2008 iMac running El Capitan to do most of my video editing and uploading. Sure, Mac malware does exist (as does Linux malware), but the risks are minimal. The only thing you realistically might worry about is it being a silent carrier for malware that could get copied over to a Windows machine, but as long as you have anti-virus/anti-malware software on your Windows PCs, then that's a non-issue.

It all begins with how to install some software and hardware. But then, suddenly it turns into an Educational video! (A sex educational one almost: Connect this, slide this into that, etc!). The idea seems pretty similar to the QR codes we have now - these too are broadcast on television, in adverts, in print and on items/products, etc (when these are scanned they also take you to a 'secret' website based on the product, etc), thus allowing you to watch a commercial, enter competitions, and the like). Also, if it (the CAT) was used when going online it could be useful to find items on Discogs, perhaps; or Amazon, etc. As they list complete barcodes, in most cases.
