are you sure pmd is the black sheep spinoff ? i'm pretty sure it'd the most popular pokemon spinoff series of all
@grick73794 жыл бұрын
@@lovelovemiraclesunsetgirl It is definitely the black sheep spinoff. You either adore it or you don't get the hype from my experience. With others like Ranger and Shadow Poke games, everyone can collectively kinda say "yeah that was pretty good", but with PMD it's a love it or don't get it situation. Popularity doesn't really come into play here I don't think.
@Diamond_Aura4 жыл бұрын
Jake Thurston I think the reason it’s kind of a “black sheep spinoff” as you called it is because it requires a very specific type of player to appreciate it. They first of all have to like Pokémon, and secondly, at least for me, they have to be playing less for the actual gameplay and more for the experience of the story. A lot of people play games for just the game and don’t even care about the story, but PMD excels in the opposite way: gameplay can be fun and quirky but the story and music is where it really shines. So it basically requires players who are Pokémon fans, and then of those fans people who care more about story and music than gameplay, which narrows the window quite a bit for who is interested. Granted, it’s isekai heaven for many of those Pokémon players and also has a decent chance of making those people furries, as they want to draw art and write stories of their Pokémon friends.
@SuperPaperPokemon4 жыл бұрын
I blame the Roguelike model. Roguelikes are unlike most games, where they are a bit of an arcade experience in modern times, in the sense that you lose all progression if you die (PMD is more of a RogueLite, since you don’t lose all progress, just items and money and your position in the dungeon. And also the rescue mechanic wouldn’t be present in normal roguelikes). And yet, unlike arcades, it’s randomly generated. You can’t just memorize the layout and abuse predictable AIs. All in all, it boils down to a unique gameplay loop that doesn’t quite cut it for most gamers these days. But whoever composed these songs was spot on. A fucking masterpiece of gaming soundtracks across the entire series. It really should get more exposure in the general gaming community.

Without story spoilers, please advocate for why Gates is a good Mystery Dungeon game. I want to play it eventually but I’ve never heard any opinions telling me it’s good (at least in the story department). I’ve always appreciated its music though. So I guess my question is: *why* are you a huge Gates fan? Is it the characters? The story? The music? The gameplay? The postgame content? I just want to hear a positive opinion on Gates for once, so that I’ll actually go out and buy it eventually...
@pit26434 жыл бұрын
LucarianSpy I'll be the one to advocate in that case. Don't worry, I've made sure to not slip any spoilers into here, so that your experience with Gates to Infinity is as genuine (whether positive or negative) as mine was! The simple but effective story (As the devs said in an Iwata Asks interview, "If you do pull off a classic story successfully, it's one of the most powerful types of story there is."), phenomenal music (Some you might've already heard in Super Mystery Dungeon), characters (Almost no one in the cast feels like filler, and said filler can be interesting too, such as Cofagrigus!), Paradise (Think a single large customizable Friend Area with its own shops, seed-growing fields, and other nifty services), easier difficulty (Makes it a great entry point for newcomers), charming optional text, wholesome morals, plot twists and turns, well-executed ending, optional multiplayer legendary boss fights (Think Dynamax raids but way back in 2012/2013, and without Dynamax) and quality of life changes (Which directly led to the gameplay systems of Super Mystery Dungeon and Rescue Team DX), all of it is what makes Gates to Infinity a valid PMD entry at the very least, and to us fans of Gates to Infinity, easily one of our most memorable gaming experiences. We'll be free to admit the ridiculously small starter selection, kinda underwhelming gameplay in comparison to Explorers, only 158 Pokemon, zoomed-in dungeon view, not-so-exciting AR dungeon feature, long phase of story downtime early on, lack of password-based rescues, and the questionable DLC concept as a whole, among other flaws, but under all of that is a genuinely solid Mystery Dungeon experience that many have unfairly missed out on, all on top of a solid foundation that understands what made the earlier PMD games great, yet doesn't try to be a total copycat of them either. This isn't the Sticker Star to Paper Mario; this is a true attempt to follow up on the existing PMD formula, with its success on that front being left up to you to decide on. All in all, we have plenty of reasons to like Gates to Infinity, which is all that much more noticeable to those who chose this one as their first PMD, or even people like me, who played the older PMD games in childhood, and blindly joined the hate bandwagon against Gates to Infinity before I actually experienced the game for myself. I'm going a little off-topic here, but it's thanks to Gates to Infinity, that my interest in the Pokemon franchise was renewed in 2018, after four years straight of not touching the series some months after my disappointment with Pokemon X and Y. If there's one easy phrase I could use describe Gates to Infinity as a whole, it's "Pokemon X and Y, but done right". Personally, I still have Explorers of Sky as my #1 favorite PMD overall, with Super Mystery Dungeon and Gates to Infinity placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Even if Gates to Infinity is considered the "worst PMD" by the public, I'll continue to support this game for what it actually is, not what people expected it to be. Thanks for listening, I hope this long reply helped enlighten you as to why we love Gates to Infinity! ;)

PARTNERiNTiME that is a really useful and great review! Thank you! I can agree with you that Sky is probably the best in my opinion too, (basically the whole game feels like an important adventure, it has an amazing post-game story that’s almost as long as the original story, all the Special Episodes that give character and story development to even minor characters like Bidoof and Sunflora, the music, and many other things I’m sure you’re aware of), and I also really enjoyed Super. My largest gripes with Super is that the story takes a decent amount of time to feel “real”, but once it does, it feels epic. And let’s not forget the switcheroo the game plays on you for the ending... and of course, the Player Partner dynamic in Super is amazing. I actually have some headcanons that seem supported by the game but aren’t explicitly called out in text that makes the Player/Partner dynamic even cooler, but yeah the story of Super was great especially by the end... and I only wish the post game was a little longer and cooler like Sky’s was. But thank you for this review! I will keep these things in mind and eventually go play Gates! That’s awesome that it got you back in to Pokémon!
@grandmasterhydreigon59014 жыл бұрын
PARTNERiNTiME I definitely agree. For me, I absolutely loved all the characters in the game. In other mystery dungeon games your partner is usually the only character REALLY fleshed out. There’s other npcs, but they don’t play THAT big of a role in the story or have great arcs. But in Gates, almost EVERY character is memorable, lovable, and compelling. Not only that, but the player Pokémon also gets fleshed out more than they usually do. You can tell the player Pokémon really cares about the partner, and the other characters in the game. The story is pretty compelling, and the music is AMAZING. I loved Gates and I think it’s a fantastic game.

As a Gates to Infinity fan, I more than approve of this! A six and a half minute medley of seven tunes from the phenomenal Gates to Infinity soundtrack! It's truly a gift to longtime PMD fans who made it this far into the series, and even manages to treat Gates to Infinity as a "retro" PMD with all the pixel-ish sound in it! Bravo, Spike Chunsoft, bravo! Oh, and let me remind you, that last time a PMD game got a medley in a different title, that being a Rescue Team medley in Explorers for Blizzard Island, it got a DX remake! Makes me wonder if Gates to Infinity could be next after an Explorers DX...

The term you're looking for is chiptune. Chiptune sounds are used in most if not all of the tracks in this game, so it makes sense that they would use them in the GtI medley as well, which is something I appreciate. This game became a huge letdown to most of the PMD community. The fact that they made this track shows all of us how you should always look at the positives first. If I told you what was great about Gates, you would think it's a great PMD. Great soundtrack, great characters, and a good story. i gotta say, the arrangement artist for this game's soundtrack (also the composer on gates and super) really did arata iiyoshi's original works justice, but this song is the one that impresses me the most... getting music from gates to infinity to fit into the modernized but chiptune-accented musical paradigm of the rest of the remake's music is really impressive to me the music from the original GBA/DS game was designed with the harmony and some percussion using the old sound chip from the game boy color , so it makes sense that remade music using that same chiptune harmony track would "fit" easily and sound really good, especially when arranged properly by a good musician but gates' music was never written for that; not a single bit of any composition on that soundtrack was sequenced chiptune music. even the music that was brought back for the dlc was pre-recorded streamed audio so it's impressive to me that they made a medley work so well within the aural "world"/paradigm of the remake's music
@laggianput2 ай бұрын
Just a quick note, it was built for the gba, not gbc. Gba doesnt have a dedicated sound chip, meaning the audio in rrt had to fight for time on the cpu, leaving it heavily bitcrushed samples to work with, alongside chiptunes. Brt also used chiptunes, but the soundfont was just different, and far less crushed on the ds due to the dedicated sound chip. Regardless, chiptune is still a huge part kf rescue teams identity

That’s why my original comment just acknowledged it had the worst sales, not the worst [fill in the blank].
@yuuhyakuya38634 жыл бұрын
Super was the lowest actually. And that was because of the bad stench Gates left next to Super. Which is sad because Super was amazing.
@Diamond_Aura4 жыл бұрын
Yuu Hyakuya do a quick Google search for “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon sales” and you find that Gates sold 560,000 (didn’t break even a million copies), but Super sold over double that, at 1.2 Million. It’s nowhere compared to the huge 5.9 million copies of the Explorers games, but Super sold double as well as Gates did.
@Diamond_Aura4 жыл бұрын
Yuu Hyakuya But yes I agree Super was amazing and more Mystery Dungeon fans need to just play it. The end of the game is what sealed the deal for me in terms of how much I loved it’s writing. The thing I love most about it is the Player Partner dynamic, which I felt was the best in the series

@neogeothomas81274 жыл бұрын
I feel like Gates is still overhated. Don’t get me wrong, that game was certainly flawed and is probably the least good of the Mystery Dungeon games (not counting the Japan-exclusive WiiWare titles), but it was still the same Mystery Dungeon that we all knew and loved. Like, at least it wasn’t like Sticker Star where it removed everything that made the series stand out in the first place. And besides, when it had to serve as a follow-up to a game like Explorers, let’s face it, Gates was *always* going to disappoint, no matter how good it was.
@StarnyArt4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you, especially your last point. Explorers (and especially Sky) is in my eyes a perfect game. So even if Gates turned out better, I think it would still have been the black sheep of the series simply because it's supposed to be the succesor to Explorers. You really can't top a game like that. Heck, I would say even Super Mystery Dungeon would be received much worse if it was released in GTI's place. The expectations were that high after Explorers.
@dawk74 жыл бұрын
Um, no, it's hated because it manages to fuck up in very major gameplay aspects, the *glacial* unskipable text and the ridiculous camera zoom in dungeons. You can also make a point about stuff like the small amount of starting options, but being brutally honest what absolutely kills people's thoughts about this game are those two everpresent, huge issues.
@We_Have_Dragons4 жыл бұрын
dawk7 Um, no. While yes, those are flaws. What you just said was greatly exaggerated. Also the music SLAPS
@dawk74 жыл бұрын
@@We_Have_Dragons It really isn't, dude. The zoom makes dungeons feel claustrophobic, and I'm not joking about the text being unbearable. I've had to stop several times because I found myself nodding off, it's _that_ ridiculously slow. And good god I forgot about the UI, that thing is horrendous and really does not help either. ... _But yes the music slapssssssss_

You should listen to the Gates OST sometime. If there's one thing that stayed consistently great throughout the entire PMD series its the soundtracks. Gates is no exception.

I first played GTI when I was in around 3rd grade, It was my first and man, I still love it so much. Maybe im biased or have my nostalgia goggles on, but seriously, the story was in my opinion great and the postgame story was cool as well. I played as a Snivy named Vines and my partner was a pikachu named Charger, after my best friend at the time Trevor. Hazy Pass is my emotional tie to the game, and hearing it hear made me gasp and remembered all the fun memories I had with this game, hell, it was the first video game EVER to make me cry at it's ending. So yeah, it may be the black sheep, its gameplay mechanics are inferior, but it will always be one of my favorite games of all time, and im so glad it got a throwback here.

This is probably my favorite compilation of songs I've heard in any video game. I was always a fan of Gates, so when I heard this melody for the first time, I was blown away by it, especially with the added chiptune. I'm gonna be perfectly honest here. Gates to infinity is my favorite mystery dungeon game. Two years ago I finally beat every mystery dungeon game to see which one I liked the best. I played explorers of darkness, my first game, as a kid and I loved it. Then I eventually played gates and then super. And after that I played the rest of the mystery dungeon games. Not sure which order.. so before you call me a mystery dungeon noob who never played the games before, there you go. I played them all and I found out that gates did in fact become my favorite game. No bias here.

I think some of the backlash Gates got was warranted (smaller roster of starters, no hunger, very lacking post game content, fewer pokemon to recruit, etc) but it definitely gets way more hate than it deserves.
