Little trick for silicone...you put a bead along the edge of whatever you are sealing, then right away wet your finger (often just in your mouth), then run your finger along the bead, smoothing it out, then wiping your finger on a rag.

Guys very well done with the primer of the lower part of the boat. I have seen numerous stories of fiberglass sailing boats and their problems with the time and stress and I slowly come to the conclusion that apart of the weight issue, your metallic galvanized hull has only advantages as regards safety in rough weather stress and even in the cases of small touches here and there during maneuvering etc. I think you have made a very good choice.
