Күн бұрын

I needed a DualShock controller for my restored PlayStation 1 so I wanted to do a restoration and repair for one. I got my hands on this abandoned DualShock controller for the PS1. It was sold to me as working but, as usual it was broken… The shell is also quite badly yellowed and dirty. Couple of the screws on it were rusted.
I tested the controller and with the help of another Controller I was able to get to the options and found out that the X button is pressed down all the time. I was able to test most of the other buttons at this point, but this was the only issue I found. The analog sticks and the vibration were also working.
I opened the controller and took all the parts out. There was some grime around the buttons on the inside but all in all the housing seems quite dirt proof. After taking everything apart I could see the issue with the X button. The rubber pads that press the have a graphite pads which allow controller to recognize when the button is pressed. Some of this graphite had stuck to the circuit board. This had formed a “bridge” on the circuit making it think the X is pressed down. Eventually this problem would occur with the other buttons as well but I guess X is the most pressed button on the controller since this seems to be a common issue, and it’s always the X button.
I used some isopropyl alcohol to clean up the circuit and all the other parts. This was enough to fix the issue. All the plastic parts were washed with soap. They the gray parts were submerged in hydrogen peroxide and left in UV-light for 12 hours. This process is called “retrobrighting” there are several ways of doing it. This submerging method is the easiest but hydrogen peroxide is not free so you might want to use some other method for one project. However, I do this occasionally, doing it like this is worth it for me. The hydrogen peroxide can be reused but in time the solution will dilute and the reaction time will slow down. My previous Game restoration videos show other methods of doing this. The methods typically require H2O2 and UV-light.
I had repaired and cleaned the controller I put it back together and tested it. While I was putting it in I also thought it would be cool to show how the vibration engines work. After all that’s what made this controller special at the time.

I think Odd Tinkering weathered the controller himself. Aside from the orange gunk the controller looks brand new, the analog sticks show no signs of wear, the D-pad is brand new and the feet of the controller are not used at all. Plus - what the hell happened to this controller really? It looks like a poor man's weathering job.

@@owend0818 This one looks like that for sure! I mean I know a used PS1 controller when I see one - the analog sticks are worn off to the point they have no texture, the D-pad loses its texture too and becomes flat and the controller itself should have scratches and flat 'feet' from being put down all the time. This one has none of those things. Because it's brand new. But badly weathered. So unless this thing has been hanging from the cable out of the sun for 20 years and then fell into some strange 'doritos' type gunk - i call FAKE. Anyone who played PS1 for a long time knows what a used PS1 controller looks like.

@Stanko Stojicevic The Ps1 controller evolved over the course of that generation, there are some videos on youtube that go over the many variations of the controller and it's pretty interesting to be honest. My first ps1 had three official controllers, none of which were exactly the same. One had the longer grips and concave thumb sticks , the other was the most recognised ps1 pad without any sticks and the other was the now common DualShock pad with convex sticks. The first ps1 pad had no analogue sticks but they added them after the N64 came out and stuck two in there for good measure, creating the DualShock.

Nice job, luckily your retrobrighting worked without producing marbled streaks. You should try the simpler and free sunbrighting, I did it on a yellowed 1gen white Wii and it worked perfectly. When I repair older controllers, I like to gently scrub the shiny areas with wet baking soda. It gives back that original matte finish and it takes off those tiny surface scratches. Basically it behaves as a very light abrasive.

The L2/R2 buttons should be put in AFTER the case is back together. Most of the time, when you try to put the case together with those buttons in place, they will catch on the rubber pads and end up scrunching them. You can tell when this happens, because those buttons won't click, they'll just feel spongy. Snapping them in after avoids this problem.

I find it easier snapping on the L2 and R2 buttons at the very end once it's all screwed in. Sometimes those rubber pads don't seat properly on the flexi board. If the button presses feel too soft, then you know they're not sitting correctly 👍

The other buttons are shapes so it makes sense for it to be a cross rather than an X, even tho X is infinitely simpler.
@ElderStatesman
@ElderStatesman 3 жыл бұрын
Then again, calling it the Cross button instead of "X" definitely helps cut the confusion when you switch between a PlayStation and an Xbox console. I've had too many instances of pressing 🟪 instead of ✖️ because my mind assumes I have an Xbox controller in my hands where the X button is in the same spot as 🟪 on my DualSense controller. Calling it the Cross button reminds me I'm playing a PS5 and not my Xbox One.
