I will restore this vintage car horn. The horn has many dents and some rusty and it is in need of a full restoration. I'm not sure which brand this is or in what type of vehicle it used to be in, some sort of car or truck. Of course I will also test and see if it will honk.
I started by disassembling the car horn and cleaning the parts from dirt and rust by sandblasting and washing the parts. Some parts were too delicate to sandblast. E.g. the metal sheet which produces the sound was rusty but I didn't want to sand blast it but I had sanded it so I had better control over the process.
Each part was either painted red and protected with 2K clear coat or polished. And the metal sheet producing the sound was blued with gun blue. This is definitely something that will be sitting on the self so I'm not too worried about rust or anything.
The cord of the car horn was replaced with with new one which matched the new colors better.
In the end I needed to adjust the honking mechanism to get it make any sounds. Besides the adjustment nut shown in the video, the nut in the center of the metal sheet making the sound needs to be tight enough. It took me a while of experimenting setting with these to get it make the sound.

12:31 Suggestion: Use a brass or lead hammer and give the wrench a sharp tap. That will break it loose much easier and reduce the likelihood of breaking the bolt. A slow twisting pressure on a stuck bolt will break it much faster. 60+ years of turning wrenches.

Simply stunning! I know it would look fantastic on your "shelf of fame", but hear me out. You absolutely must see to it that it gets put back into a 1955 collector car. That is automotive history and they truly don't make 'em like that anymore. The sound of that "honk" is from the days when people you honked at would say "thank you; my mistake" instead of instantly getting road rage.

Because I'm an old Russian, I remember how these car horns sounded - clearly and very loudly. Maybe KZbin spoils the sound, but it seems bad. And I can’t come up with a reliable explanation of how a car horns made in the Soviet Union two years after Stalin’s death could have got into the United States? I was pleased to see how you restored a piece of history. I’m happy to like your video.
