Oddworld Lore: Meetles & Mugs

Oddworld Lore: Meetles & Mugs is a video about Oddworld lore by pupbenny that takes a look at the beetle like creatures known as Meetles as well as their genetically modified Magog Cartel guard variants known as Mugs. These guys were meant to appear in Oddworld: Hand Of Oddworld and, apparently, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, but didn't make the final games!
Oddworld was created by Lorne Lanning & Sherry McKenna who founded Oddworld Inhabitants which has produced many games, Including Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and Oddworld: Soulstorm. I find the Oddworld lore fascination and hope to bring the Oddworld universe to life by telling the story of it and it's characters, creatures and locations so that they can be explained and theorised about by delving into Oddworld theory and the lore of the universe of the Oddworld games!

Man, I really wish Hand Of Odd happened, I feel like that would have given a clearer insight into the Oddworld just judging from the units you can use, structures you can build, and their abilities.

we actually have animals in real life that do that. Whether a larva grows into a locust or a grasshopper, for example, depends purely on how high their population density is.

The gun on the top of the Mug shell has that helmet-shaped structure just above it. The slits make me think Mugs might be manned. Like, there's a Slig inside that little cabin operating the gun, akin to how a Mudokon rides a Meetle.

The atmosphere in Oddworld must be high in Oxygen for such insect like creatures to exist. From ancient Earth, the large insects we see in fossil records was due to a 30 to 40% higher oxygen level then today, Oddworlds must be way the Hell higher then that.

There's slits in the Mugs' turret housing- this suggests that the gun is either easily overheated, requiring extra exterior ventilation, or is built with the intention of providing a good vantage for a Slig operator. The Lightning Bolt was likely put there by the Sligs, too, like home tankers or pilots decorate their vehicles.

I figure Meetles have two variants in Hand of Odd, for both the industrialists and conservationists. Standard meetles probably could be used as transports or harassment units with their ability to fly and get into the resources. Meetles adorned in the fancy mudoken paint that vaguely resembles an elephant cavalry's howdah, probably functions as heavy cavalry, either as ranged units or as tough melee units. Mugz (I like Mugz more) probably functioned as tough melee units in their normal form, probably to be used as bullet sponges. No doubt their armoured versions function like battle tanks, fleshing out the lategame part of industrialist armies. That's my interpretation. Also, I think you're mistaken with the mandible interpretation. At 1:38 you can clearly see there's one of those smaller mandibles with 5 little symmetrical nubby spots where the rest of the mandibles would go. However, the antennae thing is still a part of its weird mouth. The little fold bit at the top of its mouth is most likely where that single flexible antennae(?) would sit.

Actually, I saw a Meetle in the Intro to Munch’s Oddysee, remember the bug? Yeah I that’s the Meetle, although it is small, not big, unlike it’s depictions in the Hand of Odd concept art.

Speaking as a biologist, if something as simple as a change in diet changes what they grow into, then that's not bio-experimentation, that's just how their biology naturally works. That's like feeding a fat guy salads and saying you performed bio-experimentation to make him thin. Also, in nature it's actually generally the herbivores that are more ornery an the predators who're (relatively) easier to get along with. Since it pays to be a paranoid xenophobe when you're an herbivore, but a predator has to be smart enough to only pick fights with prey it can actually take down.

The difference in eue can he because Mugz are predators while the Metele are herbivores. Prey animals tend to have wider eyes more to the sides of their head as a means to keep an eye put for predators while predators tend to have smaller more front facing eyes for better depth perception for taking down prey.

Wow, thanks for making this video! I didn't think there was so much to say about the Meetles! It would be great if there was a part in the next Oddworld game where Abe has to escape from flying sligs by riding one of these creatures! It's really cool how Meetles larvae have a small forehead tentacle to use as a weapon in the future when they grow up!
