So "Drums please, Fab" was intentional after all. Fab went out for some food when the band started recording the song, so when he came back, Julian gave him this cue, which made it to the final track. That's already iconic!

George Vasquez considering I was in elementary school, no. But I’ve been seeing him (strokes, solo, voidz,) at least once or twice a year since I was 13 and his voice sounded a lot more rough and strained during most of those performances. Plus I think I’ve seen every 2001 performance on KZbin and pretended I was there 😂

Caroline Shanahan I’m kinda late, but I agree. I’m only 25 so I wasn’t old enough during the supposed prime Strokes years, but I’ve been a fan since hearing Reptilia on Rock Band and I think Julian right now is the best he’s been vocally. His vocal work on The New Abnormal is his best imo.
@ZiPolishHammer

In Angles recording Sessions, the instruments were recorded individually, as well as Julian's voice, they were only assembled together in Studio afterwards. It marks the moment Julian isn't the sole composer, and artistic different views (as well as Julian's inability to share that spot and his will to keep pursuing a solo carrer with the Voidz - back then not called Voidz). So Julian's take on Angles seems to evoke the fracture period of their careers. But I wouldn't celebrate the new record announcement too soon, becausa Julian says these things and then nothing happens. I'll wait.

that "hey mr lightman" at 6:13 is a reference to Jim Morrison when The Doors performed The End at the Hollywood Bowl back in 1968. Jim wanted the lights turned down way low, so as a big Doors fan, hearing Julian say that made me grin from ear to ear like WHUUTT?!

I don't understand how I just started listening to The Strokes in 2021. I'd heard about them of course, and of Julian Casablancas. But I just never checked them out. I'm Julian's age and listened to bands that came out around the time in the late 90's/early 2000's like Interpol, Editors, Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, The Killers and even less known bands like Maximo Park and Hot Hot Heat. Listened to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden before them, listened to The Arcade Fire, The National and Vampire Weekend after them. The Strokes would have been right in my wheelhouse, and they were huge! And now I find myself here today, 20 years late to the party!

[Verse 1] Up on his horse, up on his horse Not gonna wake up here anymore Listen one time, it's not the truth It's just the story I tell to you Easy to say, easy to do But it's not easy, mainly for you Hope that you find it, hope that it's good Hope that you read, but don't think that you should Cuts you some slack as he sits back Sizes you up, plans his attack [Pre-Chorus 1] I got it all, I got it all I got it all, I got it all Waiting for me out on the street And now you gotta do something special for me I'm gonna say what's on my mind Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine [Chorus 1] Now my day is for all my old years back I will not show my teeth too quick I needed you there, I needed you there I didn't know, I didn't know [Solo] [Verse 2] Back from his trip, he's at the door When he gets back, plays on his phone Innocent eyes, innocent lie No, it's not wrong, but it's not right Innocent time, out on his own Not gonna do that, fuck, I'm out of control I was just bored, played my guitar Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard [Pre-Chorus 2] [incomplete] [Chorus 2] And all of the loves I can't recall I found out the truth, we're not good back I needed you there, I needed you there I didn't know, I didn't know [Outro] Old time, long forgotten The old way at the side of The room where everyone's thinking, but thought I was not Old friend, long forgotten The old wave at the bottom of the ocean Just like the bottom, it all falls on them Yes, I see the write-up We're at home by the sidewalk with strangers Nobody do it their own damn, older way.

it's clearly visible in the video (3:10) that Fab is preparing to enter just as rehearsed. In the second part of the song, the same drums pause happens and Fab enters again at the same moment (from 4:25 and he enters in 4:55). It was never a mistake by Fab, it was supposed to be like this, it had already been recorded like this. "drums please, fab" became a huge fanfic.

Up on his horse, up on his horse Not gonna wake up here anymore Listen one time, it's not the truth It's just the story I tell to you Easy to say, easy to do But it's not easy, mainly for you Hope that you find it, hope that it's good Hope that you read, but don't think that you should Cuts you some slack as he sits back Sizes you up, plans his attack I got it all, I got it all Waiting for me out on the street And now you gotta do something special for me I'm gonna say what's on my mind Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine Now my day is for all my old years back I will not show my teeth too quick I needed you there, I needed you there I didn't know, I didn't know Back from his trip, he's at the door When he gets back, plays on his phone Innocent eyes, innocent lie No, it's not wrong, but it's not right Innocent time, out on his own Not gonna do that, fuck, I'm out of control I was just bored, playing the guitar Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard (Idk, lol) And all of the loves I can't recall I'll found out the truth when I get back Old time, long forgotten The old way at the side of The room where everyone's thinking, but thought I was not Old friend, long forgotten The old wave at the bottom of the ocean It's not a bottom, it all falls on them Yes, I see the right at the light home By the sidewalk, mistaken Nobody do it their older, older way
