I lived in Odessa 2/52 to 9/66 graduation in 65, my dad was an oilfield driller. He use to bring core samples from 9000’ depth that had marine fossils in the foot long sample back in the 50’s. Many changes since the 50’s, some not so good, buried “shorty” & Laura Chapman 11/2003. I do miss them.

I know what you mean, it freaked me out the first time I saw core samples with marine fossils! Anyhow, I can only imagine how things has changed since the 50's and 60's. I remember finding an old 60's map of Midland when my grandmother passed away. Half the roads I was used to either didn't exists or was county roads.

Not certain where all the hate for Odessa and Midland comes from? I've made many visits out there over the years and never experienced nothing but hospitality. Granted, there is not a lot to do when compared to an Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio, still, the isolation and remoteness from the madness of the aforementioned cities makes it worthwhile.

Midland & Odessa are great places. I did a lot of construction work there in the early 80's. I loved every minute of living there. I had to move back to Dallas when the oil boom dies in 83. I sure miss Midland though.

My first visit to Odessa was fine, ate at East 8th Whataburger and the first WB I have had in my life. I see some hate about Odessa, but if you lived North and seen actual plight with a lot of gun fire such as Flint, Dearborn,Wayne or Detroit you will come running back to Odessa. It is 15 F degrees below zero tonight up here and cold as ever. One might reconsider what is good and what is really bad. I am running out of MI as fast as I can get down there. The tour is great and oddly I knew my way around a bit in this tour.

my place of birth. so much as changed since the 80s and when I lasted visited during the 90s. Now with the oil boom, a lot of family and friends now work either the Eagle Ford or Permian Basin shale plays. recently visited in July 2017 to get my birth certificate. showed my wife where I was born and the apartments where we lived which are still standing over 30 years later.

There was more to do in Odessa when I was a kid you had a zoo in Midland and a water park between both cities Water Wonderland now is closed.. I do miss my Taco Villa lol. It's got stuff to do but it's not scenic unless you like the desert.
@myroadtours61472 жыл бұрын
Do you remember when Taco Bell was good? It was a lot like Taco Villa back in the day. You predate me, I remember people talking about the Zoo but it was gone by the time I was old enough to remember anything. I do remember Water Wonderland. That place was cool. Man, I drove by it just before Christmas and its decaying. I can't believe how much has changed, I remember Froudree road only went to 191 and we used to street race off it all night. Now there is apartments where we used to race and the other end runs to Hwy 80 or Business loop 80. I literally got lost going to both my mom's and sister's homes!! My mother still lives in the same place when I was a teen! So much has grown up that i had to google map them lol

Great video. What are your honest thoughts to someone thinking about moving to Odessa? I am from Dallas. I have lived in Dallas basically my entire life. I don't like the growing population. It's changed too much. Property taxes are through the roof and just about are forcing my hand. I may have to sell my home-that I own free and clear-because this ridiculous city can't get a handle on it's budget. I am just looking to escape Dallas and start over again-at 42.
@myroadtours61476 жыл бұрын
We lived in both Midland and Dallas. The problem with recommending them considering what you said is that both Midland and Odessa has experienced a huge population growth. At last double since I lived there. The cost of living has sky rocketed as well. Anyhow, I may offend a few people with this one but we have a saying about Midland and Odessa, Raise your kids in Midland and go to Odessa to raise hell lol Odessa has always been a hair wilder than Midland, higher crime rates and strip clubs for example. They even held the title of Murder Capital U.S. a couple times. A lot of this coincides with oil booms though. Now this isn't to say Odessa is a bad place, I have lots of good friend who live in Odessa. There is just some areas that are better than other areas. First off you have West Odessa and then you have WEST Odessa. The first being the actual West side where the latter being a countryish add on part of town...its pretty far out of town. West Odessa can be rough, that is basically where I exist at 5:15 and 5:51 is me turning on to Clements streets. I got a lot of looks shooting that footage lol Clements and surrounded area can get real rough, its not uncommon to hear gunshots on a weekend! True story, I used to hang out there on weekends lol It can get bumper to bumper on Sunday nights with people cruising. Anyhow, I guess I would stay east of Grandview. A lot of the nicer newer neighborhoods are closer to the Midland County line and 191...Odessa is almost build right on that line...it cuts through the Odessa Country Club for example. A lot of the shopping, stores, and theaters are in that area as well. Odessa is a blue collar town while Midland is more White collar...probably explains why Odessa can get a hair wilder. Both towns are heavily connected to oil though...Midland is the Energy HQ of West Texas. When oil is up, everyone is doing well, when oil is down, its like having the rug yanked from under your feet. The Permian basin really suffers from a lack of diversification. There is some sign of changes though, a lot of non oil related business has started moving into the area due to lower taxes. Midland Airport just received its Space Port license and at least one space company has moved into the area. So there is some hope in that regard. Politically Odessa may come across as more Liberal while Midland Conservative but its not in the traditional sense of the word. Odessa may vote Liberal on some issues but their not California style Liberals. Their not pro-environmentalist or anti-Second Amendment for example. You're probably not going to see them on the 5'oclk news protesting or doing walk outs. So you should be fine politically even if your ideology differs unless you come across as a California Liberal. Anyhow, not sure what else to say. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure if it's what they call a midlife crisis that's happening to me. I don't know if technically I have reached midlife. I am only 42. It's just I have a failed business-am going through a career crisis, opened my new property tax bill for this year and thought that I really need to move to a home that's more affordable. Plus I have always wanted to live somewhere closer to the desert. I don't like trees and grass & weeds. It's a headache to do yard work. Humidity can get really bad here too. Not as bad as Houston but still bad enough. Thanks again for your candid feedback.
