I just finished building a writing desk for my oldest granddaughter out of Black Walnut that I cut down 49 years ago on my Father-in-law's farm. I purchased a jar of Odie's oil to finish it. This will be the first time I've ever used an oil wax to finish anything. I really hope it's as good as all the reviews I've read & watched on it. Thank you for your review. Great info!

Thanks for doing this test. I have used odies on many surfaces in my home. So far so good.

I appreciate your review. I have been using Odie's for a couple of years now, and I have had excellent results. I think where people run into problems is that they don't follow Odie's application procedure, in particular they use too much when applying. Thanks again.

Great video!! After using Odies for several years I have come to a process much like yours with the super pen, Odies original and butter. I think the curing time is critical also. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your results.

Thanks Pete! I enjoyed testing Odie’s. I was even surprised how well it held up. I agree about curing time. I try to keep the piece in my shop so the client isn’t tempted to use it too quickly

Thanks for the creative test. I especially liked the part with coffee, olive oil and Coke. We've got a "nice little olive ring" from a salat bowl on the old table in the dining room. It's supposed to get a second life as an outdoor table, so maybe i should try Odie's Oil there.

Really like your video. Just started testing Odies and Rubio. Odies looks better so far. Your method of application is one application for the three products? Is this the most effective way to obtain long term clarity, durability and darken the walnut? The durability demonstration was impressive.

I use the same method for all 3 products. If you check out Odie’s website, they have a lot of video tutorials.

I use so much walnut for tables so that’s why I wanted to test it, but I wonder if other species would have different results. Maybe another test for another day.

I have tried using 2 coats of just odies oil and followed the company guidelines exactly. I let it cure 12 days and did a simple water test of leaving a glass with condensation on it for 1 hour. It left a noticeable water ring with and changed the sheen. Even after letting it dry 12 hours it is still there. I have tried this on 3 different samples with the same result. Do you need to put the odies butter on top of the odies oil to really achieve true waterproofing? The super penetrating oil made my piece a little too dark. I want this to work because I love the finish but I can’t get it to perform! All thoughts welcome - your result seemed to be just what I am looking for!

I did a similar test on walnut: sanded to 180 to test the sheen. Two coats on one end and three on the other. Let a couple drops of water and wine sit for 90 seconds and then 3 minutes. The result was no liquid marks. Both liquids beaded. I am going to try this on a piece of furniture that will sell in a gallery. I’m cautiously optimistic. Will sand to 400 and 1000 on the top because it’s definitely not semi-gloss. Might try the nut butter. Hope to avoid Going back to Waterlox/varnish. Hope it works for you.

I love the test, very thorough, thanks. Did you use soapy water to wipe off the coffee, oil and coke?
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Adi! Thanks for checking out the video. I just used water and a dry towel to clean the surface. You can use soapy water. Odie's has a list of cleaning methods they recommend. From Odie's Website: How can I clean things that are finished with Odie’s products? There are three different ways to clean things that are finished with Odie’s products: You can mix 1 part vinegar with 10 parts water and clean with a terry cotton cloth You can use soapy water (like Dawn dish soap), but remember to rinse all the suds off, and then wipe it dry or you can make your own cleaner using Odie’s cleaning concentrate. To do this you can make a mixture, mix 2% of Odie's Cleaner Concentrate with 98% water in a spray bottle. Just spray and wipe. This will clean, refresh your finish. Start using this mixture after is fully cured. *Or you can make your own rejuvenating cleaner using Odie’s cleaning concentrate. To do this you can make a mixture that is 50% Odie’s Oil 9oz and 50% Odie’s cleaning concentrate 32oz, then mix 5% of this with 95% water in a spray bottle. Just spray and wipe. This will clean, refresh, and rejuvenate your finish. This formula is recommended for projects that show some heavy wear and exposure, do not use it when the finish is freshly applied.

Great video! Any chance you’ve tried soy sauce as a test material? I tried OO then OWB on Walnut…soy leaves a stain. Didn’t let it cure as long as you did though.

Hi Paul. I’m glad you liked the video. I never tried soy sauce. What’s nice about Odie’s though is that you can repair areas that do get stained.

What is your experience with uv exposure outside and inside, I did some stair steps and finished them with rubio, I left them in the shop stacked and the parts that were hit by the light got tanned , had to refinish them since the difference was so noticeable. Can you try putting something like a coaster on the wood and let it in the sunlight? I have never used odies since I can't buy it in my country... the video was really good, the tests speak for themselves
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with extended UV exposure, but as we near summer that's not a bad idea to leave the piece outside. I still have the piece I tested. Maybe I'll leave it outside and cover one section as you mentioned. If I do I'll provide an update. I also have more daily content on my Instagram page.

Hi great video I was just wondering do you need to use all three to get same results or can you just use butter or oil? Have you ever tried one by them selfs to see how hold up? Thanks
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! I haven’t tried one by itself. I’ve always done multiple coats of one product or multiple coats with different products. It is a single coat system though, so you should be able to accomplish the same results with just one coat of one product.

Can you achieve these results without the butter or is that the key to better durability
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 Жыл бұрын
You can do this with any of their finishes. Their line is a one coat system. Except the super duper penetrating oil. You might need multiple coats. And I believe Odie’s dark is not recommended for exterior use. Their website has lots of information

So you decided to do the 3 different finish on top of each other or is this what odies recommends.
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 Жыл бұрын
Their recommendation is the more layers the better protection, but you can use just one layer to protect the surface. Some of the products help provide a higher sheen.

I'm reading that you can use Odie's Oil over oil stain. Any chance you can test that to see if it works? I imagine the Odie's won't be able to penetrate very well.
@villellacustomwoodworking2974

I can confirm it does work. I just had to do it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to record it. I was adding stain to a table that was already stained with Odie's Oil. It was a mixture of odies oil, safer solvent and pigment. Odie's has a video of the process on their Instagram page. For a solvent based stain you can mix 2-3 parts Odie’s Safer Solvent with 1 part Odie’s Oil, and then add in your pigment. This is better to get dark stains and it has the advantage that it cures much faster, also you can add another coat of the stain for more color. This will be applied as per the basic Odie’s oil application instructions.

Great video testing the durability of the product! Question: Do you advise using this finish for a wet-bar countertop? There will be a sink, a faucet, coffee machine etc, so a lot of frequent water usage. While one can try to wipe it down immediately and keep it dry, they may still be frequent water exposure. Thoughts?

I don’t have experience using it in that setting, but their product is intended for that type of application. It has been used in commercial settings. And based on my result from leaving the board outside overnight in the rain, I believe it should hold up if applied correctly. Good luck!

Bro, do you have a combination of Odie's products that is your go to for most projects? I am confused about which ones to use. I just use the original oil but would like to know why people use the wood butter and other products together. Thanks.
@villellacustomwoodworking2974
@villellacustomwoodworking2974 Жыл бұрын
I typically use the super penetrating then two coats of the original. From what I understand the wood butter snd wax are helpful to achieve a higher sheen. Odie’s has a lot of helpful information on their website as well as Instagram.

The second you did the hot pan test, i knew this video was BS. There's zero chance that a scolding hot cast iron pan wouldn't burn the wood. F the finish, the wood itself would absolutely burn.

None of these oil/wax finishes like odies, rubio, etc offer much in way of protection. Great for alot of things but never a table top that sees use. Coffee, wine, glass full of cold water sitting 30 min, hot paper plates etc etc all cause damage, even colored cleaners can stain wood through them. Even a basic water matte poly is a much better choice if its seeing use. Love them for clothes furniture, book shelves, shoe racks etc etc though.
