I make Hellboy’s Samaritan gun (hand cannon?). This is not just a big hunk of foam, it’s mostly made from styrene plastic, it breaks open, and the cylinder can spin!

yes the exposed casings would be very bad, the casings are for holding the powder charge, but without the cylinder to reinforce the casing you would get a rather spectacular metal failure, brass is very soft, when the charge is ignited it expands the brass to seal the end of the chamber, which is why you have to resize it when reloading

As big as the gun is custom made for Hellboy, so it would make sense that a normal person couldn’t use it without breaking their arm, since Hellboy is much stronger than a normal human. Plus, it was designed so that he could use it with his right hand if needed.

Bullet casings expand when fired. The chamber or cylinder prevents this and allows all of the energy to be transmitted forward. By removing the wall of the cylinder, you're going to run a very high risk of blowing the cartridge out that side. There will definitely be bulging that could jam the cylinder or make it very difficult to extract the case.

I know no guns of an open chamber, but, it wouldn’t be entirely unsafe as long as the bullets still have some space to stay inside the cylinder.

Without support from the chamber, the brass casing on the bullet would literally explode and quite probably embed shattered pieces of brass in your body. Beyond that the bullet wouldn't even fire properly, since all the gases that normal push the bullet down the barrel would just go everywhere. So the words to use would be "unsafe" and "ineffective"

The cylinder like chamber under the barrel was for liquid called mercury. It's supposed to stablize the gun and dampen recoil... The original design was taken from a Webley no 3 .

Since you asked.....No there is no historical evidence that any firearm was made with an open chamber like that. You are correct that would be a very bad idea that would cause the casing of the round to rupture and blow outward. This would produce an extreme example of case rupture as casings usually split down the side if there is excessive clearance in the chamber. The essential design of any firearm is to have the chamber hold pressure from the small explosion until the bullet leaves the barrel and the brass casing temp drops allowing for it to be extracted which is why if a barrel and chamber gets too hot on a firearm it can cause the extractor to slip off the rim of the casing or rip the back off the casing due to the casing still being expanded when it tries to do it. It does look pretty cool but unfortunately it cannot function without extreme damage to the shooter, gun and anyone around when it is set off. So to make an actual functioning gun like that the closest someone can come is to have each portion of the cylinder be engraved with a bullet and color filled so it looks like an exposed chamber. think of it more like if an explosion happens then like electricity it takes the path of least resistance. The exposed chamber would most certainly be the path of least resistance.
