That's kind of the whole point... only the fabled Champion of the Jotnar... Loki... can give him the answers to his existential questions. Everything he did was to get answers for these existential questions by the higher powers. Creating mortals, managing his "entrepreneurial" works, running the nine realms, harnessing more magic, Ragnarök.... were just inconveniences to him... not main priorities. Once he stopped it... he went back to what he has been obsessing over since his earlier days. It indicates that these may be more higher cosmic entities that be that even the deities do not know off...

I like the direction they took Odin for this game. Based on all the stories/lore from the first game, I envisioned him as a mad tyrant who was too far gone to care about anything or anyone; a real monster of a villain. Instead, we got a believable sociopath who manipulates others into doing his bidding with a kindly facade; I didn’t think it would work as well as it has. He’s a great villain.

I wouldn't say his thirst for knowledge but rather it was his fear. Odin always wants control of a situation and they way he gets control is through knowledge. Best thing about this scene is remembering Mimir's humiliating story from the first game about how Odin ACTUALLY lost his eye. It's so tempting to trust this weary old guy even when he's lying through his teeth trying to manipulate a little boy and make himself look like a badass in the process. Good on Atreus, playing along instead of calling him out. And dumb of the Allfather to make that bluff when he knows the kid has spent years around Mimir.

It's very much possible both might be true tho. The rift might have blinded him while Odin sacrificed an already blind eye to Mimir. What impresses me is that when we play as Atreus, we could never really see any real glimpse of the bad side we heard so much from Odin even though it can be clearly seen from Mimir, Freya, and Thor. He presented himself as a weak tired old man that just wanted peace and sought knowledge that we almost let our guard down. We know he's the big bad but throughout the game he's shown himself to be this guy who just wants to do the right thing and maybe there's some truth in that. Maybe he really did have good intentions but the actions that led him to this path will never be justified. The game almost seemed like he was supposed to be a dark version of Atreus, a powerful being that seeks answers about his fate and identity but the difference is that while Atreus gained allies, Odin used people for his own benefit and that's where he fell short to the point that his own son, Thor rebelled against him for abusing him so much

@@3takoyakis I understand what you mean, the games did a poor job of painting Odin as a villain. BUT his villainy lays in his past that he cannot escape, just like Kratos. The difference is Kratos is trying to atone for his past, while Odin's selfishness cannot allow him to. Odin has done heinous acts in the name of control, he killed Ymir to rule on high as All-Father, he corrupted the Valkyries and their sacred halls(Valhalla) to suit his own needs, he tricked Skadi into murdering her father when she rejected him, he conquered and subjugated the nine realms so he could control all angles of the doomsday prophecy "Ragnarok". What makes Odin scary in the game when he's being nice, is what he will do when he is done pretending to be nice. Odin may very well have been ATTEMPTING to be better (in his own twisted way I guess, we'll never know) after finding the mask and the "tear in reality" that would give him the ultimate answers, but his refusal to learn from his past as Kratos did sealed his fate and cemented him as a villain.

@@3takoyakis we do see his true intention: its finding answers to ease his paranoia about things beyond his control and what fate may bring. He does all this out of fear of the unknown. And he DOES do a lot of atrocities. Just look how he treats thor, and what happens whenever someone, anyone, dares disobey him. All in all, he may have good intentionsdeep down, but the means he is willing to use are ATROCIOUS, with everyone on is path just a tool to be used, or discarded. @@3takoyakis idk man, I don't really need a guy to be overtly sadistic in order to hate him with all my fucking guts; you see the way he treats Thor, the broken bonds he's left in his wake, the way he values the people around him?
