We've been snowed in this week, so a new update to this build was a real day-maker. I never thought about how the hands must work, but it does make way more sense for the actor holding onto totally static hands instead of them just having to keep their hands straight inside some kind of rigid glove!

You know it would be really cool to see you become like an official costume designer because if this is what you can do with just some foam and some glue (I know this is an understatement but it still stands true) then imagine what you can do with better materials and a much higher budget, like people should really pay you for this. Man, I definitely didn't appreciate practical effects and costumes enough as a kid. Old Godzilla and Power Rangers and such looked so silly to me because "it's clearly a guy in a suit!" but man, the amount of work that goes into them! Great video as always, can't wait to see the finished product!
@OdinMakes3 жыл бұрын
Oddly, I LIKED them for the exact same reason! I love the old Godzilla movies because it's a guy in a suit. '84 and newer versions also had an oversized puppet for close ups, which is still cool, because it's basically still a suit. (Not to be confused with a Still Suit) But I get it, if you can't disconnect bad feelings from "that's a guy, in a suit" then the movie just isn't going to work. Oddly, from time to time I get upset with movies because of a complete disregard for physics! And that is not my specialty, or subject of study- just my weird brain doing weird brain things.

I made a 50's era robot costume in college and had the exact same issue with the elbows (and knees). A fellow student came up with a great solution. Make non-symmetrical width rings (so they open wider on the outside of the elbow and thinner on the inside). You know if you've done it right if they don't lay flat but lean to one side. It took several tries (and a lot of cardboard prototypes) until I got it working. I used metal wires to keep the circles from collapsing unevenly.
@OdinMakes3 жыл бұрын
I was considering wire loops inside of fabric when I thought I would be using stretch fabric. I skipped the wire as the vinyl is stiff enough to hold it's shape. But it's also too stiff to allow really small section to move under the foot of the sewing machine. It's the things you run into when making stuff out of the ordinary.
