Alex Ball - the perfect person to demonstrate this beast. I recall Billy Currie making a comment along the lines that he’d seen the MiniMoog and it didn’t grab him, but when he played an Odyssey he saw it as a punk synth, more gritty and in your face, and right for him. (I’ve tried to find the quote, but can’t right now!)

AB harvests more varied sounds, out of more varied synths, than ANY-one! Bravo Alex and well done ARP these 50 years on.

In highschool we had an Electronic Music class (1980) and I was introduced to the ARP ODYSSEY (white and black versions). It was the only class I ever got an "A" in. It changed my life.

The Odyssey was what Billie Currie used for the astonishing solo on Gary Numan's live 1979 tour version of On Broadway afaik ( hear it on KZbin if you haven't heard it before ). One of the true great spine tingling synth solo's...

Thanks for exploring the nutty side of this incredible instrument. Rumour has it that the entire spacey synthesizer intro to Rush's incredible "2112" album was created with a multitracked ARP Odyssey.

I love that the original oldschool ARP Odyssey's manual has a dedicated section in it, telling you to not "set the sliders like an organ, and only play the keyboard" but instead ENCOURAGES the user to play the sliders as part of performing with the instrument. Thankyou ARP/Alan Pearlman for 50 years of musical knob/slider twiddling , by design !

The demo starting at 4:50 is amazing! For me the sounds sounds like lovely early Korg synths, the perfect mix between organs and synths. I’ve been longing for a video from Alex a couple of days now (take care Alex) and discovered this channel. I haven’t watched any other video yet, but by the titles it seems like I’ve found a goldmine. 👍👍

I just got a Behringer Arp odyssey. I love the sounds you can get punch out of these. Even though I own one , when I see a yoda like you on it , it makes me want to stop what I am doing and play with it. Thanks for showing what's possible on this creature. Wobba wobba ...... zingggggg . Is what I hear cutting through a mix.

Great video. My go-to synth. I picked up a near mint 1978 (mk3 - filter sounds great btw:-) Oddy about ten years ago for £1500 and I've noticed that prices of the originals haven't yet gone too crazy (maybe due to all the subsequent clone releases). If you do get one I'd recommend fitting a Kenton filter control socket which really opens things up even more.

Although controversial, the Behringer clone is utterly fantastic for those wanting this sound for the non-vintage price. The sound is so warm and, well, human somehow. I have really managed to transpose feelings in me into musical feelings using this synth, which is a truly awful way of putting it, yet completely true at the same time.

@Alan R. Pearlman Foundation So you tune VCO to whatever note/sound you want, then if I press a C on keyboard it will be a C? Im confused. So the tuning of the VCo is for the "sound/pitch" only, then the keyboard is a regular tuned keyboard?
@paulallen87778 ай бұрын
The keyboard doesn't output any specific pitches, just voltages that changes the pitch of an oscillator. To get note C on the keyboard to play a C, you have to press the key then using a tuner, change the oscillators pitch to a C with the coarse and fine sliders so then you will get a proper scale in the correct musical key when you play the keyboard. You could get the C on the keyboard to play any note depending on where the coarse and fine sliders are. It's a nightmare on the Odyssey if you catch the tuning sliders when performing, as its hard to quickly get them in tune again! Hope this helps.
