Of A Summer Evening was commissioned for the Pacific Serenades Chamber Music Concert Series, Los Angeles, California, by Pacific Land Design and was premiered by Matthew Elgart and Peter Yates on May 3rd, l988 at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The present edition was edited by guitarist David Tanenbaum.
The title is taken from James Agee's description of his childhood summers in Tennessee in his novel A Death in the Family. The medium of two guitars is intended to evoke for the listeners the sounds and images of summer evenings - nights on lawns, gentle rains and sudden thunderstorms, insects and late-night conversations. The work is dedicated to the composer's father Cosmo Conte.
