Dutch journalist Wim Kayzer interviews Simon Schama. Since the publication of he Embarrassment of Riches: An Interpretation of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age (1987), in which the British historian dissects what the real reasons were behind the Dutch supremacy in the Golden Age, the English historian is considered a leading historian fatherland.
'Vertel me wat dit leven de moeite waard maakt. Waarin vinden we schoonheid en is er over die schoonheid ook nog iets te beweren. Waarom lijken we zoveel meer te weten over onze frustraties. En waardoor worden we eigenlijk getroost. Wat zijn, met andere woorden, de herinneringen of verwachtingen die groter zijn dan ons verdriet.'

Kayzer interrupts sublime observations time and time again to insist on the gender of the Divine. When in the world will it be apparent that sex and gender is irrelevant beyond this mortal realm?

Welke vertaler krijgt "the English historian is considered a leading historian fatherland" uit z'n pen? En waarom tovert WK de bestaande woorden nervositeit en nerveusheid om in het zelfbedachte "nerveusiteit"? Verder uitstekend!

I find some parts of the interview awkward.. for example, when he speaks of the sorrow for a dying friend and not being able to find any consolation for it. It somehow doesn't fit in the interview. My general impression is that he is of a light and cheerful disposition.. as if he might at any moment exclaim "life is wonderful!" The perplexing feelings that are associated with a consciousness of a great loss seem to be foreign to him..
