Beautiful work as always and I see you removed the brace as I knew you'd likely do. I have a friend who's hard headed like that and works through crazy injuries all the time and then when she doesn't heal right or well she wonders why. LOL As for how the hatches open… Hatches on the edge of the boat SHOULD open inward. It helps anglers who keep way too many rods or excessive gear on the deck from dumping setups overboard and into the water when opening hatches. Some people are careless so that's why it's a good idea to open inward.
