Off Grid Cabin Living: Building A Simple Lean-To Front Porch Roof

We had a few balmy days at our off grid homestead in northern Minnesota. I took advantage of the warm weather and built a simple lean-to front porch roof on our cabin. #diy #outdoors #homestead

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things kzbin.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

Looks good. You may want to go back and throw some nails in that ledger and your joist hangers. With how much snow you can get and how flat that roof is I could see it holding some weight and screws have no shear, especially in that downward force.

The porch will expand your living space, especially in warmer months. Also, helps keep rain and snow off the front door. Sitting on the porch watching the bird feeders in the evening sounds relaxing.

Nice porch. I woulda used steel for that roofing considering the snow loads. What you can do, before each snowstorm is leave a thick rope across the length of the porch roof at the flashing at the house, with ends draped over either end. After its snows, each of you man one end of the rope and both pull towards the front yard hopefully undercutting the snow. I wouldn't wait for 2 feet of snow and ice though.

That roof sure doesnt look like it has much of a slope to it. Hope your water and snow slide off when needed and not build up or that roof is gonna collapse due to weight. Definitly looks too flat I would suggest you fix it so it has an angle to shed water and snow.

Porch roof looks great! You say you're not a professional, but it doesn't always take a professional to do it right. Definitely a necessary addition to the cabin. Going to help with the house cleaning upkeep for sure. Plus it gives you a protected place to sit outside when it may be raining or blistering sun overhead. You're very self-sufficient with a great "can-do" attitude! Everything you add to the cabin makes it more of your home. Congratulations on another successful project!

Even with the flashing you put on the house, you'll need to put caulking under the flashing to prevent water from coming in and rotting the ledger board and t 111! I've done rot repairs in houses for 40 years! I'm now retired!

Great job. Great video and fun seeing how things come together. Amusing anecdote: One of my cats was fascinated with this video, especially Skeeter. At the beginning when you threw whatever it was that Skeeter was chasing out of the view frame, my cat took off running to chase it 😂. He also does that sometimes when birds fly out of view on the screen, too.

The porch rooftop is such a great addition and something you really needed. I’v built some similar things, but definitely lack your knowledge and experience. Without a steeped angle, I personally would have put the truces 16’ on center instead of the 24’ it appears you did. I also would have added one more super beam in the front (3 instead of 4) for extra strength. That’s me though, and I always overbuild stuff. I hope everything holds up well when there’s 2 feet of snow on top of it. It looks great and is exactly what you guys needed. Now you don’t have to shovel the porch, you have a great place to sit, hang out, and grill. It also gives you lots of place for firewood. And it still has potential, such as screening it in and staying away from bugs, and can serve as a mud room. Well done 👍

I’m so glad you installed porch cover. Now you can sit outside when it rains. BBQ when it rains or snows. Stack wood under roof of porch so you don’t have to go out to your wood pile in the snow. And this gives you more living space. So nice for you both. 🙋🏻🇨🇦

Project came out great. I would suggest a handrail to go around recently added a handrail to our front porch at the camp. Makes a world of difference to have something to rest your elbows on. We did ours 48 inches off the ground. 2x4 stringers with 2x6 top board

I've been looking forward to your front porch for a while. It looks great, especially with the bird feeders. Just a "for what it's worth:" Most birdseed contains a LOT of millet, which almost no birds eat except doves, and they don't go to feeders. If you are buying seed with millet you're wasting a lot of money. Read the contents on the back of the bag. Walmart sells a Songbird mix with no millet. It costs a little more but you're spending all of your money of what birds like, not on what is wasted on the ground. I'm eager to see your out buildings and your new chickens this Spring.

The porch cover looks great brother, get a grill cover though, the birds will crap all over it since you got bird feeders now. Also buy just safflower seed & nyjer seed and mix them for bird seed to keep blackbirds away, they'll run your pretty song birds off.

Great cabin build! I've been watching before I start my own cabin rebuild. Also, one way I gain more roof pitch with sacrificing head room is to add birds mouths to the rafters, it's good for a couple inches. Congrats on the progress!

Looks good BUT A flashed in sacrificial board where porch roof meets the cabin sidewall will be neccesssary. That T 111 at that Junction will be toast in a year. Sure you also know you will be having to remove snow load on that 2’ OC rafters spacing. Porch roof will be a very nice add on

That shallow of a pitch you should probably double up that 2x8 , I don't think you have to notch it in you could just mail it on the face of the post. Or just cut it in between the post and nail the heck out of it. You have too much snow, for approximately 12 ft span on a 2x8
