Off Grid Dome Cabin Project: Building the Dome

The 310 sq ft Intershelter dome was erected on top of a shipping container. It's rated to withstand hurricane winds, which is perfect for Hawaii. Although we assembled it with just two people, we highly recommend a crew of 4 or more. The material is a polymer reinforced fiberglass and will last decades with very minimal maintenance. If you are looking for a tiny home, this is a great option.

Seeing the light coming through it's hard to imagine that dome taking 50 mph winds in heavy rain without tons of water coming in. I'm sure the dome would hold up though.

New subscriber, I suggest you role a couple of coats of wood preservative or clear sealer on that plywood deck. Make sure you apply a shit load of nails or better screws to keep the deck from cupping. IMPORTANT,‼️‼️ Vinny 🇺🇸

Were you able to obtain a building permit for the dome from Hawaii County? How hard and what did it entail to obtain the permit from Hawaii County for the dome?

We didn't get a permit. However, I've talked to C&C before about permits and the process is straightforward. Just takes some time for the stamp of approval. Mostly it entails submitting and routing paperwork. I was told these domes were already approved through the county. There's a church on Oahu that submitted plans on the outer islands, so some of the legwork has been done.

I'd say it's comparative to a less expensive car. Additionally, the dome does provides some unique acoustics on the inside due to its shape.

No. Never had that issue. It's a gel paint just like the kind on boats. I suspect it aired out enough for the paint at the factory and during shipping.

2 years out...was it a good purchase? Thinking about getting one for NM desert life would you recommend it? How does it do in the wind & such ? What do u think about snow? Would it hold. Is this something I could have a rocket stove/ wood burning fireplace in?

Great purchase. Easy to install. High wind and weight ratings. Fire exhaust would be a huge concern inside, however, I vaguely remember seeing these things insulated on a website. company's name is Intershelter domes.

I only lived in the cabin for a month at a time, while building. I was between there and Oahu. I loved it and would do it again. I would probably add one more dome (they can be connected) or add some sort of hatch, in the floor, to access the container.

It can be insulated and it can be made water tight. We ended up not putting sealant between each panel. Water has only seeped in around the base at a couple points. We added waterproof caulking and it has held up. The dome does come with a thick foam base seal. The points of water intrusion are where the base foam could be moved to improve seal but we used the caulk because it was easier.

The dome shape allows air to flow over and pushes the dome downward. It can be secured to the ground if you like. It doesn't shake because it's tightened together with nuts and bolts.

@@danthehawaiirealestateman3697 You need to use an external mic connected to either your iPhone of Android that fits on your label. Shure has many microphones that would increase your audio recording ability.
