In reality, it's way less than 59.5% when you take into account the embedded energy in all of your equipment, vehicles, and any other purchased items. But it doesn't matter, we don't live in isolation from the rest of the world, we are all part of it whether we want to be or not. What's important is how we choose to spend our precious time in this world. It's sparklingly clear how much you enjoy your homestead and that is 100% priceless.

Not sure off grid implies who can live the closest to being a cave man. They would have to extract for nearly everything. Clothes, dishes, forks, nails! Anything man made is not my idea of off grid. The term off grid really came from those who began "cutting the cord" a few decades ago as technology began to permeate our dependent lives. It's not a contest to cavemanship.
@stuart6478 Жыл бұрын
exactly. "off grid" always means not off grid
@chapter4travels Жыл бұрын
@@stuart6478 Fully off-grid is basically impossible today. You would have to walk into some forest where it's legal to live off the land and do it naked. Anything you brought with you would have some origin in the grid. But as I said, that doesn't matter, everyone draws their line in the gray spectrum of on/off grid where it makes sense to them.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we use to go to the Ottawa Valley where my grandfather was born and raised, his childhood home was "off grid". And so was everyone else's because there was no electricity, gas, or plumbing. We cooked on a wood burning stove, we used an outhouse, and read by candle light and kerosene lamps. Time was a grandfather clock and wrist watch that we had to wind everyday and I can't remember if there was a phone. Hard to imagine just 100-120 years ago we were all off grid. I believe if we still lived like this life would have more meaning.

You have doors now where there used to only be curtains. I think what you do yourself without outside supplies accounts for more than 59%. But then I see wire fence in the garden for the plants, possibly staples for use in the fences, nails and screws from the hardware store, etc. I guess 59% probably is pretty close with fuel really killing you. You live too far from town to have an electric car to save on fuel and your ATV for hunting needs fuel because you do need to use it even though you pack on horses. Interesting video even if you are being a little hard on yourself. Rose sure makes living your way enjoyable. Always seems so upbeat and that is a lot of food put up in jars. Enough for this novella, Take care and, Be sure to have some fun.

Those 1/4 round slabs with bark on them work great for the planking on a shed making it look like a log cabin. But needing gasoline to run engines is still technically on grid, and even if you ran alcohol (grain or wood) or a veggie oil powered diesel, it still needs motor oil, but cutting as much reliance as you can is a better way to live. You could run a generator, or even a car off of digester methane gas or even wood-gas! Eventually you can dump the automobiles for horse and a buggy transportation. As for the pigs, you can have a field where you grow all kinds of root crops like beets and turnips along with cattail roots that the pigs can even dig them up themselves.

Man, oh man, what an awesome home stead. A little suggestion, if you want to eliminate your gas and propane. Build a still and replace gas with alcohol. And a steam pump. Also, your ram pump could be running over a water wheel. There's way more you could do to get more off grid. My last little Nugget of info is replace propane with bio gas using Compost bladders. OK I love your place PS I've never done anyone the things I suggested, but the still.
@darecofreedomfarm3 Жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed this video. You have me beat on total gridlessness. My electricity is off grid, as is water and sewer. Garden water is supplied by a 2” ram pump that will run a rainbird sprinkler, however, I cannot use overhead watering except to fertilize bare earth because the water is so rich in minerals that it puts a brown coating on everything and kills all but grass. I therefore use drip line and that is prone to plugging. We use gas to go to church and occasionally the grocery store. We get eggs but have to buy chicken feed. We have a pack of dogs 8 and two cats so we have to buy large quantities of dog food and some cat food. We hav just started gardening in earnest for chicken feed and groceries and perhaps some dog food. The dogs love figs and we should have an abundance of figs next year from our grocery row gardens. I’ve also have about 7 apple ,4 pear, a few peach, almond, nectarine, plum, and various other fruit trees and 100 acres of forest. But at this point I and still working too. I would put my score at about 18% gridlessness by your standards even though I am 100% off the electrical grid.

What's the reason you don't have a better shower set-up. 12 volt pump with a propane hot water unit, you can get a instant hot water unit that will ignite when water runs through its internal wheel.

I love your channel, I know you run propane, Im not sure what the difference is or the conversion to use it but if you get a bio digestor system using ibc totes and manure to get the natural gas from that you could use it to power generators and possibly use for cooking, but the gas has to be filtered because of cancer causing gases or something I cant remember where I seen it but very interesting, Also a "gasifier" system using wood chips could save for the backup generator energy points... Plus you could run a truck on wood.... Look up eustice conway gasifier truck he drove it into town, runs rough but gets the job done... Also as far as deisel you could make that also with the bio deisel materials. You guys are awesome keep it up. Also, for tools get a forge and smelt your own nails , hammers shovels etc... This may be one of the best video's you have ever produced Jeff. I really enjoyed seeing the vast abundance that represent the fruits of all your families labor. I wonder how The Amish would fair in regards to your Gridlessness index. I think that The Amish would want to give you a few minus points for the electronics and the WIFI. But lets face it... The Amish have never been on-the-grid. It has to be easier to be off- the-grid if you were never on-the-grid in the first place. I'm also curious in regards to the girls tiny house. The two oldest (Sarah and Abigail) built it. So it would make sense that Julia would have been next in line to live there when Sarah got married to Ethan and moved off the property. But if I remember correctly Christina moved in with Abby after Sarah left. Did Julia make the decision that she would be more comfortable in the original cabin? Or was there some other factor that came into play? Perhaps Julia owed Christina some money and she paid the debt by passing on living in the coming of age tiny house this time around? Anyway... I'm always a little curious about a lot of things and I have always wondered why it worked out the way it did. With that being said. I really am very happy about all of the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed upon all of you. It couldn't of happened to a nicer, a more energetic, or a more deserving family unit. Your channel will always be my absolute favorite. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I P.S. What happened to Dave? He was such an integral part of the Gridlessness experience. I for one miss his contribution to the production almost as much as I miss Sarah. Dave hasn't made an appearance since you were producing those somewhat strange and (dare I say) slightly disturbing Blaze King commercials in an effort to secure a paid sponsorship. Losing Sarah was not unlike when I was a little kid and Farrah Fawcett was written out of Charlie's Angels. While losing Dave is akin to when Radar O'Reilly was written out of M*A*S*H*.

We grow our own meat, eggs, milk, fruit, and veggies, plus make maple syrup. I keep bees in a homemade top-bar hive for pollination. We heat with wood, with oil back-up. Have an antique wood cookstove for fun and off-grid back-up. Recently built a rainwater collection system that we use for the house as long as there's enough rain. (Metal roof) Also collect rainwater from the barn and greenhouse roofs for outside. Having children who love the lifestyle is what I envy of you. Mine are not interested. 😢 Hubby and I are in our 50's, and he is now disabled. I would love to find a couple like-minded people to share my garden with in exchange for help working it all, but it's been impossible here in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

As always enjoy the vids!!! Something to consider regarding the use of diesel? Have you considered converting to biodiesel? The only downside is the initial investment of the equipment & conversion kits for the diesel equipment. Otherwise keep up the wonderful work, vids, & everything you all do...

I'm waiting for Jeff to build a wood burning truck.or something like that. Jeff is amazing and rose is so sweet I love watch the girls learn and put that knowledge to work for themselves and the family. Thanks for all the great information . Take care and may you all be well.
