In reality, it's way less than 59.5% when you take into account the embedded energy in all of your equipment, vehicles, and any other purchased items. But it doesn't matter, we don't live in isolation from the rest of the world, we are all part of it whether we want to be or not. What's important is how we choose to spend our precious time in this world. It's sparklingly clear how much you enjoy your homestead and that is 100% priceless.

Not sure off grid implies who can live the closest to being a cave man. They would have to extract for nearly everything. Clothes, dishes, forks, nails! Anything man made is not my idea of off grid. The term off grid really came from those who began "cutting the cord" a few decades ago as technology began to permeate our dependent lives. It's not a contest to cavemanship.
@stuart6478

exactly. "off grid" always means not off grid
@chapter4travels
@chapter4travels Жыл бұрын
@@stuart6478 Fully off-grid is basically impossible today. You would have to walk into some forest where it's legal to live off the land and do it naked. Anything you brought with you would have some origin in the grid. But as I said, that doesn't matter, everyone draws their line in the gray spectrum of on/off grid where it makes sense to them.

Not sure people know what off grid means. The grid is public utilities. If you don’t use them you’re off grid. Maybe it’s being confused with self sustaining.

Admittedly, I was amazed by the girls building their cabin. I will say, of all the projects you've shared with us, the root cellar was the project that convinced me, this is the family who knows self-sustainability. I truly look forward to every video Gridlessness produces. You have raised excellent daughters.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we use to go to the Ottawa Valley where my grandfather was born and raised, his childhood home was "off grid". And so was everyone else's because there was no electricity, gas, or plumbing. We cooked on a wood burning stove, we used an outhouse, and read by candle light and kerosene lamps. Time was a grandfather clock and wrist watch that we had to wind everyday and I can't remember if there was a phone. Hard to imagine just 100-120 years ago we were all off grid. I believe if we still lived like this life would have more meaning.

The only person I know of, who is more off grid than you, is Martijn Doolaard (who also has a KZbin channel) who is currently renovating 2 old stone buildings in the Italian Alps. Factoring in fuel for his vehicle and a few things like that, he is likely 95 percent off gird. You all are one of my Most favorite channels. Your content is educational, inspiring and funny. I really enjoyed this video. You have me beat on total gridlessness. My electricity is off grid, as is water and sewer. Garden water is supplied by a 2” ram pump that will run a rainbird sprinkler, however, I cannot use overhead watering except to fertilize bare earth because the water is so rich in minerals that it puts a brown coating on everything and kills all but grass. I therefore use drip line and that is prone to plugging. We use gas to go to church and occasionally the grocery store. We get eggs but have to buy chicken feed. We have a pack of dogs 8 and two cats so we have to buy large quantities of dog food and some cat food. We hav just started gardening in earnest for chicken feed and groceries and perhaps some dog food. The dogs love figs and we should have an abundance of figs next year from our grocery row gardens. I’ve also have about 7 apple ,4 pear, a few peach, almond, nectarine, plum, and various other fruit trees and 100 acres of forest. But at this point I and still working too. I would put my score at about 18% gridlessness by your standards even though I am 100% off the electrical grid.

The shitter and animal manures would probably be enough to supplement a chunk of that propane reliance maybe, or use it to heat a hotwater system and hobb for the main house. Anyway, your homestead is basically perfect well done to you all!

This may be one of the best video's you have ever produced Jeff. I really enjoyed seeing the vast abundance that represent the fruits of all your families labor. I wonder how The Amish would fair in regards to your Gridlessness index. I think that The Amish would want to give you a few minus points for the electronics and the WIFI. But lets face it... The Amish have never been on-the-grid. It has to be easier to be off- the-grid if you were never on-the-grid in the first place. I'm also curious in regards to the girls tiny house. The two oldest (Sarah and Abigail) built it. So it would make sense that Julia would have been next in line to live there when Sarah got married to Ethan and moved off the property. But if I remember correctly Christina moved in with Abby after Sarah left. Did Julia make the decision that she would be more comfortable in the original cabin? Or was there some other factor that came into play? Perhaps Julia owed Christina some money and she paid the debt by passing on living in the coming of age tiny house this time around? Anyway... I'm always a little curious about a lot of things and I have always wondered why it worked out the way it did. With that being said. I really am very happy about all of the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed upon all of you. It couldn't of happened to a nicer, a more energetic, or a more deserving family unit. Your channel will always be my absolute favorite. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I P.S. What happened to Dave? He was such an integral part of the Gridlessness experience. I for one miss his contribution to the production almost as much as I miss Sarah. Dave hasn't made an appearance since you were producing those somewhat strange and (dare I say) slightly disturbing Blaze King commercials in an effort to secure a paid sponsorship. Losing Sarah was not unlike when I was a little kid and Farrah Fawcett was written out of Charlie's Angels. While losing Dave is akin to when Radar O'Reilly was written out of M*A*S*H*.

You can toast bread by buttering it and putting it in a frying pan on a stove and flipping it a few times. I do it when I cook bacon and eggs for breakfast. Since the skillet is full if bacon fat already I don't need any butter. Don't really care about having the toast mostly I do it to use up the bacon fat. Makes clean up easier.

I just watch your video for the first time, and I am impressed immensely! You all are so sweet and down to earth. Now I'm going to make a comparison only because I watch a few other off grid people. So let me say this, I think you guys are #1 in my opinion! Reason is, your not selling anything, your not telling anyone this is what you need to do and do it now! Your not criticizing anyone or any other way of living. You are just showing how you are loving living your life! Now I will say there is another couple that is very close to being # 1, but I have alot if reasons why they are not. Dont get me wrong, I love them I think they are sweet and its very educational watching them, but there are some things I just don't understand how they can do what they do when neither of them work. So I will leave it at that. Now the other people I watch have a great place and they are off grid completely, well they use a generator also when they need to and have solar now. They are sweet also, but they sell , sell, sell, and I am sick, sick, sick and tired of it. Also they are end of world, crazy!! Always getting people worked up. Not to say things are getting bad and I agree with alit of what they are saying, but please give me a break here. So I just wanted you to know I think your family is lovely, your girls are sweet, your wife is sweet and you are so kind and humble. You live how you want to live and if part of that is not all off grid, so be it! I think what you have done is incredible and has been alot of hard work. I live in a normal house, but do what I can to be self sufficient. I have a generator, but also power. I have a large garden and try to grow all my food, fruit, protein. My family has beef, chickens and I can alot of food. I live alone, but my parents live on my property so I can take care of them. So its a big responsibility to take care of them if something bad happens in this world. But I think I'm pretty well set to survive if I have to for awhile. I just need to up my game on a few more things like water supply if I cant get my city water anymore, and back up power more efficiency. But im trying and thats all that matters. I live in the mountains away from people so I do like having my acreage and privacy. So all said and done, I think you guys are great and look forward to watching more of your videos. Good luck and God bless you and your family!❤

Man, oh man, what an awesome home stead. A little suggestion, if you want to eliminate your gas and propane. Build a still and replace gas with alcohol. And a steam pump. Also, your ram pump could be running over a water wheel. There's way more you could do to get more off grid. My last little Nugget of info is replace propane with bio gas using Compost bladders. OK I love your place PS I've never done anyone the things I suggested, but the still.

I really enjoyed the video. Great to get the complete tour of your homestead. The wood cookstove and outdoor toilet bring back memories of my childhood home. We cooked toast right on top of the woodstove with a bowl of melted butter on the side. So good. I think may be you are not taking into account that your fuel costs are adding to your food production and if you are paying for it by selling animals and crops you have raised or materials like lumber you have produced then it shouldn't count against your score. Those girls are growing up fast. Great seeing them all in the video. Have a great summer.

As others have said you are probably one of the most self sustainable families on YT. Not only that you have instilled that thought process in your girls. They know there is very little that they cannot do if they put their mind to it. That knowledge is something that most everyone grew up with years ago. That is something that is missing now days. You have one of the most interesting channels on YT. We love what you do, keep doing it.

That video was amazing. Loved the tour. It’s great just to see the garden, animals but the work you guy’s have put into it. That scale doesn’t even give you justice for real. You guy’s are probably the most “OFF GRID “ than anyone on you tube for the most part and have a family of 4. Just a great video. I love watching your channel ❤️

They have a family of seven. Jeff and Rose have 5 daughters. Sarah, Abigail, Julia, Christina, and Keziah. The oldest daughter Sarah was married awhile back and moved off the property. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I

Great video! Got me thinking what percentage I am,probably in the 40 percent range. The majority of my day to day power comes from solar but generator runs the well pump and washer every 2 weeks. I heat with wood 100 percent that I harvest from my property, The place is payed for so just taxes thankfully. My garden is slowly becoming larger and more productive but still buy 98 percent of my food. I've had the place 6 years and lived here full time for 2 years so it's a work in progress. The peacefullyness and contentment of this lifestyle is a thousand percent better than my large house with large tax bill and working 60 hours a week use to be.

I love your channel, I know you run propane, Im not sure what the difference is or the conversion to use it but if you get a bio digestor system using ibc totes and manure to get the natural gas from that you could use it to power generators and possibly use for cooking, but the gas has to be filtered because of cancer causing gases or something I cant remember where I seen it but very interesting, Also a "gasifier" system using wood chips could save for the backup generator energy points... Plus you could run a truck on wood.... Look up eustice conway gasifier truck he drove it into town, runs rough but gets the job done... Also as far as deisel you could make that also with the bio deisel materials. You guys are awesome keep it up. Also, for tools get a forge and smelt your own nails , hammers shovels etc... Unless the neihbors have that covered

Hope you have a worm farm. I absolutely love mine. Feeds my garden and I make a little bit here and there selling worms and tea. 🎉

We are looking to purchase an additional 112 acres here in Patagonia soon. We have a homestead but now we are going to up our game. Hydro Electric and all part of one price. We grow all our own food. No grid available. No phone service. No public water. NO TAXES>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SEAFOOD and BEEF.... No government interference. Jim
