Off-Grid in Portugal: Living in a Magic Valley

Bees, waterfalls, fruit trees, yurtlife on steep hills, a messy garden, rawness and feline cuteness! All in Magic Valley where Haico and Else worked hard to create a place to not only reduce their ecological footprint, but to give something positive back to the earth. It took us a long time to release this video, and in the meantime a lot has changed. The dream is still very much alive, but in a different format. Haico about this video: “You can see the build-up of our land in the summer of 2018. Our first year! What a lovely time. So much energy and enthusiasm. Unfortunately we, Haico and Else, didn’t make it as a couple. Half 2019 we mutually decided to go our own way. I will continue Magic Valley. Else went traveling and will possibly find her own place in the region.”

Leven in een Magic Valley
Bijen, watervallen, fruitbomen, leven in een yurt op een steile berg, een chaotische begin in de tuin… deze korte film toont rauwheid en romantiek van het leven hier. Het is er allemaal in Magic Valley, de plek die de Nederlandse Haico en Else kochten in 2017 en waar zij niet alleen hun persoonlijke ecologische voetafdruk willen verkleinen, maar ook iets positiefs aan de aarde willen teruggeven. Het heeft erg lang geduurd voordat we deze video konden publiceren en in de tussentijd is er veel veranderd. De droom is nog steeds erg levend, maar krijgt vervolg in een andere vorm nu. Haico over deze video: “In dit schitterende filmpje zie je de werkzaamheden op ons landje in onze eerste zomer. Wat een heerlijke tijd was dat. Het is kort na de verwoestende bosbranden, maar de energie en het enthousiasme spatten er vanaf. Helaas hebben wij, Haico en Else, het als koppel niet kunnen volhouden. Vanaf half 2019 hebben wij gezamenlijk besloten om ieder zijn weg te gaan. Haico gaat verder met Magic Valley, oa als imkerij. Else gaat een tijdje reizen om daarna mogelijk in de buurt haar plekje te vinden”.

Crazy how I found your video searching for ways to get independent cause I’m trapped in a suffocating system in Portugal. I work all day and don’t have time for my family and always dream of moving to a place like that. Right now I am trying to save money while it is virtually impossible but will try anyway... this is a wonderful process that is impossible without money when you live paycheck to paycheck . Am trying to decode the whole process anyway 🤔

So nice and heart warming to have watched this clip from KZbin. Just love people who feel and enjoy their connection to the earth. It is of course, as with all 'pioneers' that the earth pays a price to accommodate these people. Trick is how to balance nature and mankind in a wholelistic way that does not displace or harm too much of the natural world people want to enjoy living in . Dag luitjes ik heb jullie kanaal gevonden dankzij The Knot Man wiens kanaal door KZbin voor 7 dagen is gesloten. Ik ken 'm 'n aardig tijdje via KZbin. Fantastisch plan van jullie en als ik jullie mag adviseren, plant peulvruchten, heel erg gezond en je hebt aan een weinig genoeg want het vult goed, de reden dat ik dit zeg is omdat de tijd waarin we nu leven alleen maar slechter en slechter wordt en omdat de boeren in Amerika hun gewassen niet van het land mochten halen zal er wellicht heel snel honger komen en mochten ze je gewassen plunderen, dan heb je mogelijk nog genoeg bonen, die je dan maar ergens moet verstoppen, het is overeenkomstig als de oorlog die in Amerika heeft gewoed tussen noord en zuid. De soldaten namen het verse voer mee en de peulvruchten lieten ze achter, terwijl die juist heel gezond zijn. Ik wens jullie heel veel succes met jullie onderkomen!!

@peru nut the answer is easy : getting away from the stress, and too many people living in a small country, all focused on making money. Over here people are more relaxed, the climate is better, people take time to enjoy their life and are more satisfied with what they have. And Portugal has hills 😁🇵🇹

Stay in England....Portugal will be in lockdown again soon...and it´s getting harder to live like they are here now...been here 20yrs and it has changed so much...I bought land in the Algarve and built a wooden house...impossible to do now due to planning laws...
