Join me at my cabin in the woods for some off grid quilting! I'll be piecing these fun String blocks using my hand crank sewing machine. Such a fun block to make - and uses all those leftover strips.

Thank you for sharing your time and talent. You're a lovely person, so pleasant to listen to and I especially appreciate the calm environment (no music in the background, no "hand jive" flying all over), your cabin seems like the perfect place for soul mending... and sewing!. Such a warm and inviting tutorial. Thank you again.

Nice! I like the look of your bright/light squares! Good to know about the parchment patty papers! Here's another idea for paper: When I have a piece of paper that's been printed on one side and is blank on the back, and I don't need to keep it for my files, I put those sheets of paper in a box or drawer labeled "Blank on Back." Then, when I want to paper piece something, I mark the page on the blank side. An 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, for instance, will trim to 8 1/2 inch square, and of course one can make them any smaller size as desired. I do love the patty paper idea, though. Also, don't worry about your hair - I think it looks just as cute as anything! Also, Wave of nostalgia over here, over your manual sewing machine! My mother wouldn't let me near her very nice, expensive electric sewing machine in a cabinet, but HER mother, my very tolerant and easygoing Grandma Susie (may she Rest In Peace) shared her lovely old treadle Singer sewing machine with me, and that's how I learned to sew when I was maybe 10 or so. What dear memories! Thank you for making these videos 💕🪡

Yes. It wasn't a hand crank but you reminded me of it. All those old machines were workhorses! I'm refurbishing a Singer like the featherweights from 1923. They were built to last! Have fun

I, too own a hand crank sewing machine % it’s a Spartan/Singer 99. Thought I was crazy when I found it as I’m not the most coordinated person on the planet, but found out thst it’s very easy to manage! Haven’t used her for quite awhile but I think I just might start taking her to my guild sewing day! The Spartan machines never came with any kind of cover so maybe I need to make a cute one first!!!

What also works great is pellon's SF 101 one-sided light wt Shape Flex fusible....sew on the fusible side AND do NOT press until square or triangular or other shape is covered with strips, etc. AFTER SF101 is covered then press and trim. You will find for "summer quilts" wt you will not need extra batting OR you can use a batting...BUT there will be NO messy, tedious paper-tearing you will have to do. pellon Shape-Flex ...SF 101 can be brought for sale prices by the yard or bolt.

Instead of using any sort of foundation paper, which ends up in the landfill, I use used dryer sheets. I iron them on a very low setting before piecing. They don't add bulk like muslin foundations & you don't spend hours pulling out all those paper bits. What year is your Singer handcrank? I have an 1896 Jones(English) that was my only machine for the 3 yrs we lived the Cotswolds - 1973-'76. Sewed like a champ!

Hand crank machine is so cool! Why do you use the paper? Why not just sew the strips together???
@littlefootquiltshoppe1130
@littlefootquiltshoppe1130 2 ай бұрын
Great question! You can....however because of the different size/widths of strips, it can be very challenging to create a square block without some sort of foundation. But feel free to experiment!!!! There's no 'one way' to do things!!

I was given a very old hand turn sewing machine as a child and have many happy memories of using it. Later, after serious illness, I took up patchwork ,eventually going on to teach patchwork for 25years. So many happy memories all starting from my little sewing machine.

Simply to add stability. You do not have to use a foundation, but I think it makes it easier to make the blocks square.
