I am not that familiar with AKs. But I know for a fact you can have all kinds of guns on the AR platform in NJ, they just can't say "Colt AR15” on them. I believe it is the same for AK47 style guns.

Gun laws or not, I am not really sure a trip to NJ is worth the effort simply to drive some of these sand roads. The area is rather small, and the number of people there is beyond belief. It may be impressive to the locals and some from NYC, long Island, or perhaps SE Pennsylvania, but there is simply no reason to drive there from across the continent for 4wd. I grew up there, deep ruts in mud holes and sand are not what I think of when I think of 4wd. Rocks requiring high clearance, steep grades, tight turns around a switchback with nearly shear drop offs, navigating rough rocky surfaces and erosion gullies in the road, and getting to a place that would take hours to access otherwise. That is why you have 4wd. Mud, slop, tearing crap up because you're bored in the city, getting stuck and flooding your differential, and using an overpriced urban commuter to drive where you could easily walk in a short amount of time is well....so NJ.
