Years ago, a stranded motorist stopped in front of my house late at night with an overheating problem. I made a thermostat gasket out of an old paper milk carton, used 2 layers, and worked fine, and they made it back to Ohio.

In the early '70s, I bought a 1956 Willys CJ-5. At that time, larger, wider wheels weren't available. The next best thing was to do exactly as you did. Punch out the rivets and find a wider car wheel to weld it to. Later, farm implement wheels were made with the Jeep bolt pattern. Unfortunately, the tire selection was kind of slim. You could get wide tires, but the tread was only 8" wide. They looked funny. A big fat sidewall and skinny tread design.

I am 80, and that was how I reversed rims in the late 50s and early 60s. I never bothered to reverse the fill valves, but that was only a minor inconvenience. They looked good enough, that two of them were stolen out of the box of my pickup. I call that good enough. Fun video.

That is why I love Harbor Freight tools. If you get an electric tool for $12 that does five jobs and then craps out, you still got your money's worth. Of course not practical for a business shop. I have an angle grinder that I have used here and there, over 25 years! Cost me $12 and it still works. I bought it at one of those "Rent the Hall" tool sales. I also bought a can opener for $6. I opened my tuna can for lunch with it, this past week.

Most old cars that had the left hand thread studs have had them replaced by now. A lot of people don't know or have forgotten about them. My Dad bought a 67 imperial. The driver side studs are left hand thread's. He was trying to remove the front wheel and was struggling with it. I told him they where probably still left hand. Checked and it was. He's been talking about replacing them since but hasn't found a real reason to yet.

Painting gaskets with axle grease before installation keeps them from sticking to flanges… works for intake gaskets, theoretically for other gaskets. They still fill the void completely, and axle grease works in place of goop. The intake has almost as much vacuum as coolant has pressure, and air leaks through smaller holes than water. I just thought of that, so I haven't tried it yet
