One of the best things I've noticed about watching Columbo is seeing the murderer taking the very competent, very well thought out measures to tie up every loose end and devising the perfect lie. But just when the murderer thinks everything is in the clear, the grand scheme gets completely upended by something very mundane yet so oddly specific that it wouldn't be factored into the lie.

Love this! My dad was a huge Columbo fan and used to say the show was not a classic "whodunnit" because we often find out the murderer in the opening minutes. Instead it's a "HowCatchEm"...watching Peter Falk slowly draw the criminals to be their own undoing. Classic stuff.

Something red from osp said that is rather accurate is he figures out who did it rather quickly, the rest of the episode is just for him putting together how and why it was done.

Steven Spielberg directed the first episode of this? I didn’t know that, the more you know. Yeah, I’ve heard of this series before, but I never knew that fact, very interesting. I love the theme this show has based on how you described it. So many shows I want to watch, but only so many I have time to watch lol.
