Yeah, Val is not a very likeable character throughout much of the film, but at least he does have that redemptive moment near the end. Maybe it's not quite enough to totally forgive what he put everyone through, but it's still more than we got in the French movie, where the son doesn't once stick up for his parents. That's just one reason why I think the American remake was an improvement.
