Today, we are going to revisit the #Seplos #BMS V3.0 with the new firmware #update 0.7. I show in all details what to consider when upgrading the firmware and paralleling the BMS afterwards. I also 'clone' all settings from one BMS to the other two, to make them all the same.
The older firmware version had some issues with calculating the SOC when the battery was either full or empty and also didn't show 100%SOC when fully charged. Have these issues been resolved with this new release?
Let's do the extreme test and replace the battery shelf with these three Seplos Polo batteries for a week, so I can really get the feel for the batteries and BMS with this new firmware.

@derfreiemensch good question. My main reason is for active balancing, the passive balancing, whilst it works, and technically burns of energy, as I understand. Whilst my cells are grade A, and always within 2mv variance, I still need the faster active balancing when there is a lot of amps being charged.

Nice update! Thanks. I got seplos v3 bms with 2a active balance. It actual work good some limitations. -It comes with a dedicated switch to turn it off or on -it also have a connection to the dry contact of the bms to trigger the balance voltage. The limitation is that the balance voltage is not good not from 3.45v. The good side is that it has a dedicated switch that you can turn on it off. I only use it to balance pack and it will be off until next event I’ve unbalanced pack. Seplos would need to redesign their active balance I would like you test the active balance too.

I have two of the seplos bms v3.0 with the active balancer setup, the v0.7 tracks soc really well now compared to v0.6, it now tracks in line with my lynx shunt, there is still an issue with the reset as you mentioned, this is more to do with the current resolution at the top end. The active balance communication is only a turn on the balancer , it is not communicating or allowing configuration of the active balancer, you either need to put it into standby for 10 hours with the button or the BMS will trigger the dry contact on over voltage alarm, it then needs the preset values to be met to start balancing which is 50ms differential down to 30ms differential then your on the BMS passive balancer. I have bought some neey to try instead.

Thanks for sharing. I have the total opposite experience with SOC being accurate. I will show this in the next video. It basically stops counting SOC below 6% and above 98.5% and therefore loses track.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia I unfortunately cant post a picture, I upgraded on the 13th March and it was tracked near enough to be useful in my production environment that I felt comfortable to switch from the Lynx shunt to the Seplos BMS at the Battery monitor it has drifted slightly over time without an 100% reset it is currently 56% seplos vs 58.8% lynx shunt after 20 days of partial cycling but this is for me down to the difference in resolution 0.1 vs 0.8 x 2 Seplos BMS's obviously worse the more you scale out the batteries. I need some of your sunny weather and Amps outside to get some more 100% resets :-) I will email you some of the VRM graphs as they show it nicely. Thanks for the testing as always, I look forward to a good OGG video! Be interesting to see if the Peter Can bus system would help, I suspect as the Peter system will be presented with the wrong SoC data the problem would be the same....
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 ай бұрын
@@richardnorman7132 Thanks, got your email and data... I'll email you some sun☀😊 The Peter board will only relay what data they get from the BMS. So hence it is important for the BMS to calibrate back to 100% when the battery is considered fully charged. At least once in a while. You probably will notice as well that the drift between shunt and BMS will only increase over time without proper reset. Yes, resolution plays a role here if you have these small loads and contributes to the drift.

I currently have a set of 5 x 100Ah batteries in parallel for EV charging. There are 3 Seplos Polo with bms V3 model V10 and firmware 0.7, one Orient Power with Pace bms, and one Power Quenn with a JK bms (I changed it). Before the update to 0.7, the SOC calculation was catastrophic, I had a difference of 40% at the end of discharge between Seplos and the other bms. In Charge, the Seplos reached 98.5% very quickly when the others were at around 60%. Now, with version 0.7 the gap has been reduced, the SOC indication between the JK and the seplos is approximately identical, and the Pace SOC with a difference of around 7%. At the end of the charge, the Seplos show a cell imbalance of approximately 40 to 50 mv. Do you know why Seplos quickly abandoned the marketing of Polo-type models? is it because of the pouch cells ?

@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 ай бұрын
You're working with Cyrille, right? I think I have seen your video in French when you tested the three Seplos and the SOC was all over the place. Thanks for sharing these results of the three BMS, very interesting. I don't know why they discontinued the Polo series. I think it was a good battery design but maybe too expensive to manufacture for them due to the round curves it had. There is a lot of competition out there in this 48V100Ah segment. I don't think the pouch cells had any issues as they were perfectly compressed in their own little fixture inside the box.

Seplos 2A Active Balancer. At US$100 it is too expensive. IF it was truly SMART and connected to the BMS in an intelligent way, where the settings could be accessed/changed via BT. Yes, I could see that being useful. Most of the time, the passive balancing of the BMS is OK, and the active balancer is not needed. If you had correctly top balanced a pack when new, there is a good chance you would not need an active balancer very often, so a power switch on the outside of the battery box would be a good idea. Your cheap balancer solution works fine for me on my V2 BMS's.

I think Seplos has such a switch on their vertical box to power on the active balancer (I've seen it in their video). It also turns on automatically, when the delta is over 50mV.

Hi Andy. I have the Seplos BMS v3 with its 2A Active Balancer. I ended up by disconnecting the Seplos Active Balancer, replaced by a NEEY 4A unit. Synthesis of the reasons : the balancer cannot be configured, nor monitored. Details (coming from my own tests & talks with Seplos support guys): A) The balancer triggers by itself when the cells voltage difference is greater than 50mv and from 3v. That is the way the balancer is "autonomous" and can be used with any BMS => unfotunately those settings are hard coded in the balancer and CANNOT be changed (far too low trigger point for me). B) the dry contact connectiting with the Seplos BMS brings "some" control through settings 100 & 101, which are cells voltage delta based with stupidly high default settings : triggers when the delta is over 500mV and stops when delta is 300mV) => while this gives a kind of setting to control the active balancer this is far insufficient and does not solve the 3v start point from A). C) no way to know when and if this active balancer actually works, out of looking at its (blinking) led on the electronic board (or the one on its reset button) => a big lack for those monitoring things a bit/connecting to home assistant or similar. NEEY 4A does the job perfectly and replaced the Seplos active balancer in my vertical Seplos box (and it fits fine in it :)) As for the SOC from the Seplos BMS, I ended up trying to use it (I totally disklike to overvoltage thing to reach 100% + found it globally inaccurate and not reliable) and bought a Victron Smartshunt to get such information (and in a way I can exactly master what is 100% and what is 0%)

Thank you so much for sharing. That is very valuable information. Especially, how the BMS 'controls' the balancer. I was hoping it activates the active balancer when the passive balancer on the BMS comes on, but this does not seem to be the case. It's a shame that Seplos misses all these opportunities to build good and reliable devices. I really like their BMS but the software is just not really usable. I'm still testing their V3 BMS with my PowerWall 2.0 but found it needs a lot of tweaked parameters to work some kind of... So, hopefully, I can convince their engineers and R&D team to improve the software. But even little changes take a long time if they even get approved...
@matthieusevestre6401
@matthieusevestre6401 2 ай бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustraliaunfortunately there is no use of the passive balancer settings and both are living their live in parallel, blindly at some point. Seplos would be able to update the software on the bms to change the way they trigger the active balancer through the dry contact, but this would works only if there is a way to disable the active balancer « self trigger hard coded settings » (otherwise it will continue to activate from 3v), which seems unlikely for the units already produced (unless there is an hidden way to update the active balancer Seplos did not tell me about )

Hi Andy, but I also have the problem with the new JK BMS that my battery stays at the requested charging voltage the whole time and doesn't go into float mode. The reason is that with an RCV of 55.2V only 55.11V is reached and the inverter does not increase the voltage any further. This means that the trigger for switching to float mode is not triggered. I think it is due to a calibration problem. I tried setting the 55.11V as 55.2V but the next time I charge the voltage is still below 55.2V. Neither JK nor Goodwe have responded to a request so far. The firmware is the latest x.11. Perhaps you can look into the topic of calibration. Or someone from the community knows the problem and has a solution. Best regards Andeas

Yes, correct. if your inverter does not have a charge voltage offset, it won't work with any BMS. Your inverter measures differently to the BMS. You can only calibrate the BMS as per your inverter to make it work. Victron has the SVS - Shared Voltage Sense which shares the same voltage across all devices.

Hello Andy, can you tell me if you are going to test the seplos bms v3 + active balancer (2A) from seplos? Greetings from Poland :)

@s300bhp 3 ай бұрын
Andy, does the 100% soc need to be hit to record a cycle or does the bms add the totals up to make a full cycle? Like a discharge limit of 40% and a charge limit of 80%?
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 ай бұрын
The BMS counts Ah in and out and uses that to calculate the cycles. The 100% is really just a display. You won't believe how many emails I'm getting from people asking why their battery never charges to 100%😊

My experiance is that the alarm*16 for 30min is still not working. I would really like this feature as it makes it posible to balance the pack a little. The V0.7 have improved the SOC measureing. On V0.6 the SOC could just suddenly drop from 40 to 0 when it realize that the voltage is too low. I have also played with the active balancer. Im not impressed. Its relay based, so you can hear the "clicking". The remote "dry contact" from bms did not turn on. I could only turn it on manually by pressing a switch. Maybe its better with the v0.7 firmware. Compaired with Neey, its a dinosaour balancer with all the relays 🤣.

This whole firmware update process is very user-unfriendly and will only be done by nerds or installers (who never actually do this). This kind of equipment should support fully automated update without any cable shenanigans. 🤷‍♀️

so at this point with multpiplus 2 and seplos v3 bms is it better to just use no coms and let victron control things?
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't disconnect the comms, but the displayed SOC is still off quite a bit in the BMS and unreliable. At the moment, there is no working solution to get the BMS reset to 100% when fully charged without hitting the overvoltage protection. This is a bad design and less than ideal. I'm working with Seplos on this but I can't see any progress or even a fix...
@giollaliddy5817

But if coms kept then surly voltage will remain (as you said @34 mins ) unnecessarily high voltage all day. Can you keep coms but just use the batteryshunt for SOC? I have victron MP2 15kva on the way to replace growatts and have 4 x 14.3kw V3 seplos mason kits. would really like to know best way to set these up with Victron @@OffGridGarageAustralia

@@giollaliddy5817 Yes, that is probably the best way to run the system: set the BMS as the controlling BMS and ignore their SOC calculation. Leave the smart shunt as the battery monitor for your whole system.

On my sailboat i need to switch my batteries for 16S 280Ah LiFepo4. But due to room restrictions i need to distribute the cells in 4 packs of 4. What is the best way? For balance cables a take thicker ones and all of the same length. But what about spreading those 4 packs? Just the cheaper bus bars as well as 2x70mm2 cables as short as possible between packs to keep the resistance between any 2 cells similar? Or does it make any difference because current needs to flow across all cells anyway?

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't be too concerned, especially not about the balance cables. Standard size and different lengths should be fine as there is no current going through them. The interconnections... 70mm is a great option but at 100A you will see a voltage drop and a cell difference because of that. That could be a problem. What BMS do you use?

Hi Andy, please can you do a video about SOC displays, I have 2 jk 200amp BMS working on 304an EVE batteries. The soc goes up and down with no real relationship to the actual soc. One set is powering a gwiz electric car and the other is running the house. It will often say to low or to high, resetting the BMS battery ah figure will bring it back to what is closer to the actual Soc. I want a display i can rely on.😮 Ideas please, the best Soc display 👍 Thanks Ellis

I have two JK BMS running for a very long time and they both show the SOC correctly. Sure, they need calibrating from time to time, but once set, it does it all automatically. What do you mean by 'the soc goes up and down'. Got an example?

Download and Upload is defined by its topology. You DOWNLOAD a programm into a PLC, because the PLC is by its topology BELOW the computer. And you download something from the internet, because the internet is OVER the computer in its topology. Thats nothing chinese, because also Siemens call it in this way at their TIA Portal. Also on Rockwell PLC and so on. Summerized: The BMS is below the computer, so thats why they call it download.

I'm sorry, but expecting you to upload firmware via 9600 baud in 2024 is stupid, if you want to stick to serial then at least support 115kbps, but you could also put usb, cf, etc. in for firmware updates.

but you forgot a major point: they were the first selling these inverter bms which let us build diy lfp batteries to integrate them seemingly into growatt or sma or other manufacturers. and seplos was the first selling cases with bms as diy kits for lfp cells. If you do not need those other do and JK had back then messed up a lot with their can bus bms cause I had purchased that when they had released it but that was a huge mess cause it could not do can as they had announced it. You had to order that with the right presetting from the factory and you could not change that afterwards on your own.

This is the proof of bad idea of communication... No communication is better because there is nothing to disconnect... Information about your system is enough to know what is the voltage of your battery, and what power you are getting in and out... This means, all this work here is useless... I don't have any of this issue... So it is not worthy... Good for the seplos, but is not necessary...
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I get your point, but from a certain system size on, you want comms between battery and the inverter from a pure safety perspective. I drove my battery shelf without comms for ~2years and never had any issues. Until I connected the BMS and could actually see the data. One battery turned off frequently because of an over temperature problem in summer time and I didn't even noticed that. It turned off the battery, cooled down and turned it back on. I didn't know about it as everything just 'worked'. But that's very bad system design and can be quite dangerous.
Inaccurate SOC calculation of the Seplos BMS V3. Here is what I found...
