The boxes, guys! Have we forgotten about the boxes??? I'm unpacking, checking, measuring and capacity testing the new EVE 304Ah cells from Qishou Technology in China. Very good quality, no dents, no burn marks, no condensation are just my first impressions. With voltage and internal resistance matched, let's do a full capacity test and get some curves on the screen!
The test of all 4 cells has not only exceeded my expectation but also the nominal capacity of the cells stated in the specs.
I'm impressed. This is the new standard!

Hi Andy, new to your channel a week or 2 ago I came across it and have now watch all your vids, I'm retired now and have been setting up a camper trailer to leave sunny(not) Victoria and tour up the east coast and follow the sunshine, returning to Vic during the warmer months. My setup started with AGM batteries but after thinking about the 50% suggested max drain this was a joke, so searched the forums and youtube for information on LPF, a week ago I placed my first order for 4 EVE 105Ah cells from Luyuan (also Amy) this was one of the suppliers mentioned on the DIY forum but it was your channel that made my mind up after learning so much from your videos, cheers.

Andy, Your Videos and content are great. Many of us are trying to replace batteries in a boat, yacht or van, so just 4 cells, battery box or housing and appropriate bms is required (1,2 or 3 12v batteries). Out of all your videos I see lots of content but not something covering this basic and and essential need. Also on your web site you havent updated the spreadsheet of costs with this 5 th delivery or 304ah batteries. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm

I'm tossing up between a 24 V and a 48V system, but where I need to put it (ie, roof) only gets a limited window of solar due to trees in a Council conservation area nearby. I'm really interested in decent 304 AH cells as compared 272 AH cells as there's a better chance I won't run out of battery. Obviously I will need to have plenty of high wattage solar panels to feed into any battery... This video is of particular interest to me because of this. Well done Andy.

Many vendors are selling bloated cells and saying they all are bloated from the factory. They also sell them as 310 or 320 amp hour cells. New cells are not bloated, and will not bloat unless abused, and the manufacturer rates them as 304 amp hours. They may indeed test higher, but many vendors are not telling the truth. I would have to check the spec sheet for the tail current on a standard charge. Looks like you received quality cells. Yes, I personally use 3.1v, but certainly not below 3.0v. The cell temperature will rise below this by about 5 degrees C. FYI, temperature differences can cause the difference in capacity as well. If you are really interested, take them into a temperature controlled environment for testing.

Question for you. In your opinion, and experience. I see many people trying to address/ prevent buldging/ swelling through compression. Even the mfg. Reccomends compressing for extended charge cycles, even though there is a lack of instructions on the process. Do you find different amounts of swelling in different Ah cell capacity? For example 200Ah vs. 280Ah
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I've never seen any cells 'breathing' during cycles. That's maybe mainly because I don't fully cycle my cells and use only a small amount of capacity with every cycle. Compression only gives you and advantage in terms of cycles if you have very high C rates. The test conditions specify the exact conditions for the test they did to get these additional cycles. Charging with 0.5C and discharging with 1C. Who does that at home? If you go away from that test environment, the benefit will be less or even vanish. I doubt you will see any difference in cycles over the life if you mostly stay in the 0.1C -0.5C range for charging and discharging between a compressed to none-compressed cell. It's good to see Will Prose and Lithium Solar coming to similar results and go away from this compression madness.

A little suggestion you might try when you run discharge and charge tests. I don't know how many sequence steps your tester allows but if you insert a 5 minute no load rest gap every 15-20% state of charge points you can see how much terminal voltage drop to expect at your discharge rate when it picks up discharge again. In a five minute rest period the cell should recover to no load rested voltage. Five minute rest may not be enough to fully recover to no load equilibrium below 20% state of charge, The terminal voltage drop for a given cell current will give you an additional cell matching indication. Truely matched cells will have only couple of mV difference in terminal voltage drop for same discharge current. The terminal voltage drop is not just the cell resistance x current. If you remember the issue with active balancer if the cell terminal voltage drop does not match for same cell discharge or charge current the active balance may transfer in wrong direction. At 40 amp charge and discharge current (15% CA) I would expect about 35-40 mV terminal voltage shift after equilibrium reached around 20-25 degs C from no load rested for a cell in 280-300 AH range. The measured cell resistance voltage drop of 0.2 milliohms x 40 amps is only 8 mV of that 35-40 mV drop number. This terminal voltage drop is dependent on temperature and gets much greater below 10 degs C.

Do you agree with the recommendation against using these types of lithium cells as a secondary battery set up in an off road vechicle? I have read that prebuilt batteries, such as the Voltax are better suited to vibrations and movement you might expect when going through hundreds of kilometers of corrugations. Other sources claim 100aH cells are ok, but 200+ah is not good due to the thin alumunium housing. Do you think a DIY battery for an off road caravan is safe? Thanks mate

The only issue with setting cutoff voltage to 3.1 for discharge is the voltage drop when pulling large currents, triggering a premature shut down. The terminals are too weak to allow cranking down the busbars to try mitigate this

That is correct. Some inverters have a dynamic low voltage disconnect depending on the load. My Victron has that.

Hey Andy, I ordered a set of these a while ago now. Unfortunately I haven't had a great experience so far. First of all they have sent the ones with studs, not holes to use my own studs, so their photos don't necessarily match the product. It turns out either version can be ordered, but I wasn't given the option. They have also not been able to provide working tracking information for about 6 weeks now. But apparently they are now in Australia and should be moving. Hopefully this is a one off experience, but all the little hassles like this are the reason I try to purchase from an Australian supplier myself. The language barrier makes it worse, but their lack of transparency is a killer. I only hope the cells are decent, because it would be a total nightmare to claim any sort of warranty refund.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Paul. That's indeed not a good experience. I had a similar one where I could not access the tracking information and it took a few weeks until I got a notification from the AU courier that they had a delivery for me. If you can get these batteries locally, that's definitely better for you, even the price might be higher.

The Catl cells seem like Eve rejects, so Grade B or C cells. Maybe half of them bloated, and varying internal resistance. I have the 310Ah (which seem to have been downgraded). Worst thing is the welded fixed 6mm terminal screws, with 10mm dia. Bases, obscuring most of the terminal. The supplied bus bars are too short for any bloated cells. I have 8, only 2 connections still use the supplied bus bars (tripled). I bought longer heavy duty bus bars, and filed out the holes to fit 10mm, individually measured and fitted. Other supplied hardware was 8mm bolts and nuts!!
