You’re not crazy, decaying trees are the best place to plant anything! I put a layer under my garden bed and pile compost on top 3”-4” deep. The decaying wood adds nutrients and holds moisture so you don’t have to water as often.

Here in Australia my twin sister and I love our native birds. In the last big drought many birds came in to the city looking for food. My sister and brother in law set up a feeding station. We watched as lorikeets, black cockatoos, sulphur crested white cockatoos, pink galahs, pink crested Major Mitchell cockatoos, etc came each morning and night. They did this until the drought broke then they returned to their habitats in the country.

@@OffgridwithJayandJen We have some horrendous droughts here in Australia. We are gearing up for another that the meteorologist bureau is telling us is coming. Our last drought lasted almost 2 years and water restrictions became the norm. I live in western NSW which is an arid area. We rely on irrigation so a long drought is not good news.

They have been in the ground a week or so and are starting to get leaves on them already. They sold them at the local conservation district tree sale, so I'm hoping they would only sell trees that would do well here. Fingers crossed

I planted over a live tree I cut down and had phenomenal results. But, if planting on or very a tree that died, I would be weary of the new stock getting possibly a disease that may have been the previous tree’s demise.

Jay l was holding my breath when you were cutting that tree down, have you ever heard of or tried rhubarb crumble and custard before? It’s absolutely delicious 🤤, I also have a hazelnut tree, had a dumb moment last year when I found hazelnuts in the garden and wondered where they came from 🙄🤣, then I realised that the tree was producing nuts lol, we have elderberries here too and people make wine and cordial with them, Jen l’m looking forward to seeing the flowers come up, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧

I’m not sure if you grow enough stuff like potatoes and squash that would qualify you to build a root cellar, even canning stuff but is that something you’d consider building yourself?

Jay I have a question about solar. Is the movable system you have worth it or should i make a permanent 1 direction mount
@OffgridwithJayandJen
@OffgridwithJayandJen 25 күн бұрын
It depends on if you have limited space and good sun exposure. If you are limited on either I really like the tracking system to optimize the sun you get. If you have plenty of space and really good sun exposer then just make a bigger stationary array and have a few more panels. The tracker it nice, but like anything in life....the more complicated it is, the more failures you have to worry about. Just my thoughts.
