My theory is that the ghosts are the same 3 gentlemen who are in the portrait room sinking in the quicksand. While escaping from the asylum, they didn’t notice the quicksand and now they’re looking for a ride to get them as far away as possible.

Fan correction: the spell on the top half of the page in Madame Leota’s spell book is actually a direct reference to the Disney movie Blackbeard’s Ghost. Not Treasure Island. It is a spell that the main character (played by Dean Jones) discovers hidden in the handle of a bed warmer once owned by Blackbeard’s wife (who happened to be a witch) who cursed him to “dwell forevermore in Limbo.” The spell in the movie is described to “bring to one’s eyes and ears one who is bound in limbo” and the words that Dean Jones speaks out loud are: “Kree Kruh Vergo Gebba Kalto Kree” which summon Blackbeard played by the hilarious Peter Ustinov. Side note: for a while, the portrait of Blackbeard from that same movie was used in the final scene of the Disneyland attraction Pirates of the Caribbean. In the final room where the pirates are drunkenly shooting each other, there used to be two pirates trying to pull up the ramp a loaded chest full of booty including that portrait from the movie. Yes, making that one more connection between The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean! You may say Jean Lefitte! I say Peter Ustinov!

I have a headcanon that Ezra and the Hatbox Ghost are related in some way. Not that they're the same person, but maybe they were relatives in their mortal life. They have very similar faces, so that's what I've assumed.

The boring answer is just that they used the same face mold.There's other places the same mold was used too. He's also a pop up ghost in the graveyard and is visible in several of the pictures in the corridor of doors (most easily seen if you have to get evacuated). Look up Leering Head on the HM wiki.

Is it just me who thinks that Ezra looks way too similar to the Hatbox Ghost. Judging by my eyesight, they appear to have the same face mold, a large grin on a skeleton-like head. And pretty similar body structures, both being moderately tall and lanky. They both wear somewhat similar styles of hat, and trench-coats. Maybe the Hatbox Ghost never was taken out of the attraction and just got repurposed into Ezra? That’s pretty stupid since I’m pretty sure he was there when the ride first opened. But, maybe they decided to reuse the Hatbox Ghost model on Ezra, or something. May just be me, though.

My favorite Hitchhiking Ghost is any of the three but with the pepper's ghost illusion back. Pepper's Ghost is the most incredible illusion at Disney, and the fact that they effectively got rid of it to make the ghosts CGI is ridiculous.

@Indy Rikerd I went to Anaheim about a year ago and I remember it being the CGI ghosts, I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if they'd had the Pepper's Ghost at Disneyland. AFAIK the only park that still has the original ghost illusion is Tokyo Disneyland, as their Haunted Mansion is unchanged from when it opened, and is effectively the original WDW version (with all the pros and cons that comes with that).

The same mold for the hatbox ghost head was used for Ezra's head. Originally the hatbox ghost was going to be death but he was removed (originally). It's like how the head for Mayor Carlos was reused 3 times on Pirates and once on the Haunted Mansion.

The ones I know is that Ezra died from laughter,(he was a salesman that sold stuff for pranks), Phineas was a oil salesman, something like that, and Gus was just a prisoner who wanted to sleep in peace and quiet which never seem to get. I don’t remember the name of the comic but their stories where there. My favorite hitchhiking ghost is Ezra.

My family didn't know that these characters actually had official names so we ended up naming them Bob, Steven, and Pete (in order), and we also do believe that they do come with us out of a ride because one time, when my sister rode the ride she had Steven and she was like, he's following us now, but then the ride ended up shutting down some time after it so we were like, omg they shut down the ride because Steve is gone. This wasn't written very well but whatever, this was from my childhood...

I have (and still listen to/read with my kids) the 1970 Haunted Mansion Disneyland Record and story book and that concept ghost is the center ghost at the end of the book. I just thought it was because the more skeletal ghost was too scary for kids.

Asra is my favorite because I love Skeletons. The whole theory is more relevant than the theory on Fandom. The theory of Esra is really interesting, BUT, is this irrelevant to Phantom? What if Phantom, Esra and Madame Leota are related? Think about it. Esra is Death him self. My background related to Guss and... ehm... the other is that Esra did a forbidden summon ritual in the Asylum and became Death. Phantom has a cult background story in my Fan-Fiction of a lost young man who has sinned and be punished by a cult Indian tribe. Esra (Death) give him the strength from behind the light to bewitch the second location (Ravenswood Manor) Madame Leota talks with the riddle words behind that light. Madame Leota is a Spirit and give the hosts riddles for each mystery in Haunted Mansion and Phantom Manor. She is mental strong enough to ditch Death (Esra) from behind that light. Phantom fell for the deal with Esra and became a powerfull demon. Madame Leota a helpfull medium who stands neutral of the dark and the Light. This are my theories and my view on this theory. Actually the incantation in Madame Leota’s book is not from Treasure Island, it’s from the movie Blackbeard’s Ghost from 1968. You were pretty close though - both movies involved pirates.

Corrections: The incantation is not an allusion to Treasure Island, it's to Blackbeard's Ghost. The head mould is known as the "Leering Head" and is the same head mould as the original Hatbox Ghost, pop-up ghosts, and some of the "Family Portraits" with it being included as an Easter egg to the recurring head-mould.

So the Hitchhiking Ghosts do have canon stories. Again I'll be referencing the comic series that ran from 2006-2007. Phineas was a snake oil salesman that sold an elixir that turned people's tongues into reptilian ones. An angry mob formed and pushed his wagon, with him inside, off of a cliff. Ezra was the owner of a prank and toy store. One day, a mysterious man introduced him to the Chinese finger trap, and Ezra was unable to free himself. Ezra found this so funny that he laughed himself to death. Gus was a shepherd who was constantly kept awake by the bleating of his sheep. One day, sleep deprived and angry, he lashed out at the sheep and awakened an angry ram. The ram chased him all the way to Port Royal (yes, from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride), where Gus interrupted an important wedding. The short-tempered groom had Gus imprisoned. However, pirates attacked Port Royal, blowing a hole in his cell and allowing him to escape in an abandoned dingy. However, Gus' ball and chain fell overboard, pulling him into the ocean and drowning him. The three ghosts made their way to the mansion. Phineas tried to con the other ghosts into giving him valuables, leading to the other ghosts disliking him and running him out of the mansion to stay in the graveyard. Ezra tried to pull pranks on the other ghosts, leading to them driving him out to the graveyard too. Gus was accepted, but still wanted sleep and went out to the graveyard voluntarily to avoid the loud parties. The three met and became allies, and decided they did not want to be in the mansion anymore. Phineas and Ezra were outcasts, and Gus wanted to go somewhere quieter. So now, they stay in the graveyard hoping to hitch a ride out of the mansion to a new home.

According to the first Haunted Mansion comic series; Gus was a shepherd trying to take a nap while herding his sheep who got arrested due to accidentally slamming into his town's mayor because of a ram, escaped from jail using a cannon while the town was in the middle of a war with pirates. After rowing for days, he found an island and tried to go there but in his celebration, he accidentally killed himself by dropping his ball and chain into the boat sinking it. He eventually found his way to the mansion but, because of the never ending parties in the mansion, he decided to hitchhike just to get away from the noise. Ezra was a prankster from birth who became a prank toy magnate. Eventually his business starts to decline which causes him to go to China to look for new gags. He eventually gets his hands on a Chinese finger trap at a mysterious shop and dies laughing while trying to figure out how to get himself out of the trap after the shopkeeper disappears. He makes his way to the mansion and immediately starts pranking the other ghosts (like putting Madame Leota on the headless knight's body) and is eventually beaten up and kicked out of the mansion. Phineas was a snake oil salesman whose supposed cure-all elixir gave its consumer snake tongues. He was chased off a cliff by three of his victims and eventually tried to con the other ghosts into buying his elixir until Madame Leota pointed out to the other ghosts that they wouldn't need the elixir because they were already dead making Phineas leave the mansion.
