There are two other underground tunnels in Disneyland - One leads to the rising Tomorrowland Terrace Stage - The other in in New Orleans Sqaure, Believe it or not the French Market bandstand originally also lifted from underground and there was another tunnel leading there. Watch the 1976 Christmas in Disneyland opening song segment for visual proof that the New Orleans Bandstand lifted at one time.

I have something, I think. Like thousands of other Florida high schoolers, I sang in Disney's Candlelight ceremonies during my high school years. My senior year, the production was at Epcot, but the previous three years were still done at the Magic Kingdom. As still happens at Disneyland, it was done on the backside of the Main Street train station. For the 1991 performance, I recall there being extra paperwork, including noting each student's height and hair color. This was supposed to be because the performance was to be recorded for a "Christmas in the Parks" video. We had assigned seats for the performance that year as well. None of that happened any of the other years I participated. However, I've never found any of that footage... or any footage of any of the Magic Kingdom Candlelight ceremonies, despite evenings spent in a KZbin rabbit hole hoping for a converted home movie. Did the footage ever get used in a video? There seems to have been a Christmas celebration show on the Disney Channel in 1991, but did that air before the performance? What happened to that footage, and does any footage of a Magic Kingdom Candlelight exist? This is something you could investigate with @Disney Dan, if he's still interested in the histories of various park celebrations.

My dad bought my siblings and I Disney shares in 1987. In the 90s, I remember being so excited to get this exclusive shareholder book where they shared upcoming rides, movies and plans. The one for Hercules was STUNNING and I vividly remember seeing the sketch work and artwork. These usually came in about a year before the trailers dropped. You might want to see if you can find them somewhere. They might have details on some of these rumored rides. I am almost positive I don't have any of these books anymore, but they might be a resource you want to find for the future. And in the event it was mentioned in one of those books, it might have been scrapped because the OLD Godzilla movies were allegory to the atomic bombs we dropped in WWII. So it probably got scrapped because it was a cultural sore point.

Here's a mystery for you: When I was a kid growing up in Orlando, I recall a local news story announcing a sort of boutique 5th gate adjacent to AK a la Seaworld & Discovery Cove that revolved around nocturnal animals. A nighttime safari was the main attraction that I remember, as well as the name "Night Kingdom." I can't find anything online about it now, especially because "Night Kingdom" has long since been tied to rumors of a villains park/land. Knowing WESH2 and their ilk, there is a frightening chance that they simply took a rumor and ran with it, but I'd at least like confirmation that I'm not crazy or imagining this.

I've got a Disneyland Mystery for you Dallin: The Mystery of the Unbuilt Land of Oz. I believe I read about it in the unauthorized book "101 Things You Didn't Know About Disneyland" (the version I had had a yellow background with black silhouettes of different Disneyland rides on the cover, and since it was first published in 2005, I'm sure it's gotten reprints over the nearly 20 years of its existence), but the author claims that Fantasyland was originally going to be modeled after The Land of Oz with guests first entering the Munchkin Village, with Walt Disney himself really gunning for this to get built. Supposedly, according to the book, Walt Disney had even bought the rights to either the book series or the MGM movie itself, but lost the rights to build The Land of Oz because Disneyland was taking too long to build, and the rights he had bought passed the allotted time he could have them, and Walt ended up having to forfeit/sell back the rights.... This supposedly being the reason why Disney petitioned Congress to extended the time in which someone would own the copyright to a franchise, as well as why the Disney Company has been so obsessed with making their own Oz movies ("Return to Oz", "Oz The Great and Powerful", all of the Disney Villain origin stories that all follow the same premise of Wicked - both the book and the musical, where the known villain turns out to have not really been as evil as everyone thought), because they're still mad over the lost profits they could've made by owning the copyright to The Wizard of Oz. I don't know how true any of this stuff is... hence why I am submitting it for approval of The Midnight Society-- I mean, the "Offhand Society". Of all the Disney Park centered KZbin channels I watch (you, Dan, Rob of Midway to Main Street, Kevin with Defunctland, TPM Vids, Expedition Theme Park, Jack from Park Ride History...etc) no one has ever mentioned this as being a part of Disney Park history, let alone a rumor. It kinda reminds me of the rumor I used to hear about the original Disneyland originally going to have a Lilliputian Land inspired by the Gulliver's Travels story before it was eventually scrapped too.

I grew up in SoCal in the 80's and I totally know what you mean about the Disney lore lol! Before cell phones and internet word traveled via friends telling friends and CM's gossiping...we all know how the telephone game works right?? I date myself with that I guess. But I remember hearing that the People Mover had to be changed because kids were jumping out of the cars, running a muck and trying to jump from vehicle to vehicle and onto the emergency exit ramps! The idea for Rocket Rods was... to fix this problem they needed a roller coaster type ride to strap them in. And yes I remember it always breaking down and hearing guests complain. It was a good day at Disneyland when the Rockets Rods were working! It was actually a really cool ride when it worked. The feeling of the magnetically propelled ride was still new and exciting!! Thanks Dallin! I love these investigative videos and the old footage you add ❤

OK I got a good one. What's the deal with the Podracers on the 1990-2000 Disney Parks map? I remember reading years ago I believe on Jim Hill's blog....that the Star Tours Adventures Continue re-theme (With the Podrace specifically) was completed in time for Phantom Menace's original release yet dropped at last second, then delayed for over ten years. If this is true then does that mean the 2011 ride was actually made in the 90's? Or is it just re-using an idea that was dropped long ago? Or did some Disney artist who drew the maps in the 90's just REALLY like the podrace scene and thought it would be fun to add that in??? (I mean who doesn't love podracing tbh.)

Okay, maybe not a full-on mystery but I would love a definitive answer: There seem to be two schools of thought about the american flags that line main street and why they aren't vexillogically accurate. 1) They were all made wrong on purpose so they wouldn't have to be lit or taken down at night due to US flag laws. 2) They are wrong because they are historically accurate to the time period on Main Street USA. Both things can kind of be true, but which was the actual reason in their creation?

This might not count as a mystery but it IS something I’m personally interested in and haven’t been able to find much info on: what was going ON with the design of the alien in Alien Encounter?? Obviously we’ve seen photos of the final animatronic, but in all the promotional material (commercials mainly) the alien looks COMPLETELY different from what we got. I’d be super curious to compare all the different iterations of the alien that are public knowledge (that prototype model from Tony Baxter’s collection, commercial alien, animatronic alien, etc) and kinda pick apart the progression that led to the final product. There’s even design inconsistencies between the final animatronic and the TOYS that were sold of the alien. Could be interesting!

The tunnel under Tomorrowland originally served as access to the Tomorrowland Terrace stock rooms, trash rooms, and as access to the Tomorrowland Terrace stage (that rises up for shows then sinks back down) . There were also dressing rooms for the bands that played on the stage. It started right behind and below CircleVision and continued past the stage to a point right behind/below the old Tomorrowland skyway station and the Mod Hatter. It was used constantly, was clean, and well-lit.

They had an admin who would go weekly to DL and post high quality pictures free to use so I never had anything other than Disneyland wallpapers on my pc. They also had a radio station that played park music, even spiels and stuff and I always wondered how they got their hands on this stuff. But then the photographer had a heart attack and couldn't continue and the site kinda fell apart from then on. The forums weren't as active and the only reason to stay was the radio station. Haven't been back in over a decade so I don't even know if it still exists but those were some fun times.

Yes ofc, I remember I bought little pencils there in the shape of arrows with the erasers shaped like the fletching(feather) part of the arrow and they came in a little quiver pencil case. It hink I might still have the pencils in a box somewhere.

Speaking of abandoned Disney attractions and the Japan pavilion, the show building for Meet the World was built at the back of that Japan pavilion, but the attraction didn't fit so it was instead used at Tokyo Disneyland. The show building at Epcot just sits vacant, and is often mistaken for the "built" show building for the Rhine River Cruise that was never actually built 😀

I’ve been inside that Japan show building and it is chock full of extra restroom fixtures, lamp posts, trash cans, doors, benches, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, and much more. It’s basically just facilities storage but it’s the only place big enough to hold all of those items for the park.

It was the same for the Tower at Universal Studios when I worked there. Old rickety stairs that might fall apart as you walked and old fixtures, supplies and whole lota dust! 😂

Well here's a useless fact. Cole Younger is the name of one of the infamous Younger brothers who were part of the James-Younger gang. Cole was played in an episode of Tales of Wells Fargo by Royal Dano who would voice Lincoln in Great Moments with Mr. LIncoln. This is also a bit cosmically funny as Younger was a Confederate, being part of Quantrill's Raiders.

You’ve mentioned before that Rocket Rods made the track irreparable, but what is your source on that, and what exactly does that mean? It’s not that I doubt you, I’ve just never heard it elsewhere, and I’m curious about the extent of the damage. Are you just talking about the rails (which seem like they could be replaced to me), or do you mean to say that the concrete structure that’s still in Tomorrowland today is beyond repair?
@jillgoodman1515
@jillgoodman1515 11 ай бұрын
I've also heard of the track damage but not sure where the info comes from. It's silly to think that Disney CAN'T fix something lol! With enough money you can do anything! Someone has just made the decision it would not be "cost effective" to fix or tear down and start over. I still hold out hope that they are planning something big for Tomorrowland and that's why they have neglected it sooo much! 😊

I'm not the biggest Godzilla fan, but from what I remember of Cold Crash Pictures' overview of the Showa-era Godzilla Criterion collection, the late 70s/early 80s were kind of a nadir of Godzilla content. The films' budgets and audiences had been shrinking for years, and it REALLY showed. While there were some creative efforts made, most of that creativity was in service of getting ANY kind of Godzilla movie out. And the few Godzilla movies that were making it to the English-language market were so badly dubbed and recut that they were mostly something to shake your head and laugh at. As shabby and disreputable as the Big G was when Epcot was being planned, it seems unlikely that he'd be considered for a shiny new attraction at a shiny new Disney park in the US. Especially not when Japan was economically on the rise and eager to show off its comparatively new prosperity.

"Godzilla vs. Megalon", which in Japan was a pretty minor installment, got a strangely wide US theatrical release in 1976 probably to capitalize on the hype for the De Laurentiis "King Kong". And "Megalon" is a really goofy movie, so it got Godzilla this renewed reputation in the US as kind of a joke. I can totally see some American Imagineer spitballing this but it not going anywhere. I can also see somebody making it up 20 years later.

Rocket rods were awesome! Got to ride them 3 or 4 times. I HATE that they ruined the people mover track. Come on Disney just implode tomorrowland already and build a new incredible land! But you have to re-route the monorail first AND created a new space mountain entrance from Main Street. Losing this land for a couple years wouldn’t be that big of a deal as all the attractions kinda suck anyways. Well except for Star tours, oh and Astro blasters

During covid they let people take a tunnel into the haunted mansion to skip part of the line. It wasn’t anything very interesting because it was obviously built for employee access, but they made it as cute as they could by adding a few small props and picture frames.

I worked for Disney in the early 2010s, what a lot of people don’t know is that California Adventure, used to actually be the original parking lot for Disneyland. There was a rumor going around, that a child had gotten hit by a tram in the parking lot, back then. And so back when I was working at Disney, in California Adventure, the area that is now known as Buena Vista Street, all the shops would get random phone calls during closing. And it would just be static on the other end. We’d get knocks on stockroom doors but no one would be there. Merchandise would randomly fall off the shelves after we had just stocked the area. We also would hear random child laughter… it only ever happened during closing. And only if you were pretty much by yourself. It was so creepy there at night.

Here's a clue: Godzilla isn't a Disney property. Never has been. UPA owns the rights domestically for Godzilla up to 1990, Sony from 1991 on. Sony would never license something like Godzilla to Disney.

I rode rocket rods and the original people mover before it. I was in line over an hour doing that queue that started outside where Astroblasters is now and switched back thru the circle vision theater, then underground in the small tunnel and up to the boarding platform. The whole rocket rods experience was unthrilling and uninspired. There was hardly a show to go with it and I don’t even recall onboard sound. Just going fast and slowing down at every turn. A far cry from the people mover’s relaxing and enjoyable tour of Tomorrowland. Disney should invest in repairing the track and bringing a new version to the people mover as a basic ride for those who would enjoy sitting down and taking a relaxing spin around Tomorrowland. It will be popular. Just look at the line the people mover still has at the Magic Kingdom at WDW. As for the Godzilla ride for Japan… I was a cast member in the early 80s when EPCOT opened and I have never heard of this before. Besides, Disney would have to negotiate using Godzilla since that character belongs to Toho studios Japan. I don’t think Disney would have ever been interesting in acquiring a rival studio’s property back then before Eisner ever showed up to be Disney’s ceo. Disney Co was a very autonomous company and their characters would have been enough to keep the parks operating. Besides not even Mickey was allowed to set foot at EPCOT when the park opened. (Except for the grand opening ceremony as I remember since I was there.)

File under: "When Some Kid Thinks 2008 is Ancient History." Newsflash. The People Mover could be restored, but it's function would be pointless unless it went a bit faster. Those PowerWheels toddler cars go faster. It was novel in 1960. Not so much now.

as a Godzilla fan I highly doubt that Disney would want to make a Godzilla ride in the early 1980,by that time in most Americans saw Godzilla as a joke, this was due to Godzilla vs. Megalon (a very campy Godzilla movie) appearing on Primetime television in the late 1970's. Also Godzilla what despite some believe is not in the public domain but is instead owned by Toho so there would be a price if Disney wants to make that ride and I just don't think they would take risk on a character that was seen as a joke especially with the fact that it's based on property that they don't own.

Fortunately, I got to ride the Rocket Rods not long after they opened and, yes, you did end up going through a tunnel and then up some stairs to the center of the load area. I wish I'd paid more attention (there was a lot of coolness, as well as oddness, to take in), but I remember going down through the tunnel and going... "Wait a minute, what are we doing down here?" The whole cue felt rather "Frankensteined" - as did that whole ride, actually. You could see, in concept, why they thought it would be cool, but it just wasn't built for that type of attraction. Thanks for the fun vid!

Here's a challenge: Find out what happened to the original Hatbox Ghost. Rumor says he was placed under the Omni-mover track very near where he was originally installed for several years but may have eventually been dismantled for parts. I'm sure they thought they would eventually tackle his disappearing head illusion, but we all know that didn't happen in his original form.
