And I go like "yeah, but British Army is just two divisions strong. India normally fields 45 Divisions, not counting paramilitary." . Or according to this example: it'd be "Challenger 2 is the best tank in the world and worth 10 T-90, but we got just 224 Challenger 2 while they got 4200 T-90 and T-72" . In just a few years, when Brits get the Challenger 3, the situation would be to that India will be manufacturing as many tanks as UK has in just one year. Germany, which developed many different vaccines (the first mRNA vaccines as well) has given vaccine to 46 countries AND helped to built new vaccine manifactures for instance in Africa. The biggest donor countries in the world are 1. USA and 2. Germany (btw,, same is true for many other projects like the UN itself which gets most money from the US and after that from Germany. 1) The brief burst of U.S. spending in 1896-1898 went mostly to a larger navy, and the rest for the Spanish-American War of 1898. 2) From the 1890s until World War 1, the UK built an astonishing number of battleships, several every year. The technology advanced so rapidly that some were already obsolete when they entered service. The other naval powers were the doing the same. 3) By the time the U.S. entered World War 1, the UK and France were financially spent. The U.S. provided the financing later in the war, but much of the weaponry the American army fought with in 1918 was French. The war ended before the U.S. arms industry could develop and build it own weapons. Enormous quantities of food, clothing, oil, and other military supplies were supplied by the U.S. 4) The massive military spending by the Soviet Union in the 1970s and '80s, and the consequent lack of money for everything else, was one of the causes of its collapse in the early '90s.

NATO requires 2% of GDP to be spent on military (even if alot of countries struggle to meet that), the USA is spending less than 4% of GDP. After watching the USA world bases video, you can understand why the budget is so much with so many troops stationed everywhere. I've seen a few reactors that are or were part of small Eastern European militaries, and they talk about how they liked having USA base in their country. Some pointed out how the only tanks they ever saw were US Abrams because their country just couldn't really afford them.

As people are pointing out with GDP. The US spends 3 percent for 800 billion in 2021 while in 2021 Saudi Arabian spent 6 percent for 40 billion. Imagine if the us spent 6 percent instead. Also even though the US spends more money every year, it's projected that the amount of GDP spent will decrease by 2032 to 2.7. that's madness Also in 1991 the Soviet union didn't just disband. It collapsed economically and disbanded. Also you mentioned the exponential growth of wealth, which can be attributed to the British Empire and United States which promoted free trade and both countries adopted alliances after WW2 which increased trade and wealth worldwide Also that increase in the 1900s post ww1 was definitely for defense. The US was the largest economy already by that point but was completely defenseless aside from the two oceans protecting it. It became increasingly necessary to have a bigger military

Since I'm sure it'll be talked about, it's worth pointing out that using sheer numbers can be misleading. For instance, I'm American and we have by far the highest military spending by raw number but it's only about 3.4% of our GDP, a much better measurement. We're 13th on the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's Military Expenditure Database for 2019(I'm using the sources cited on Wikipedia's "List of countries by expenditures" page since KZbin isn't a huge fan of external links), well behind #1 Oman and for 2020, we don't even make the top 15 of another database's measurements. Not bad for a superpower.

Many of the pre-1914 spurts by various countries were caused by the modernization and expansion of navies in the new Dreadnought era. Even South American countries got into naval arms races. The United States defense budget isn't just for manufacturing and maintaining arms, but for the research that keeps the new weapons systems at the cutting edge to defeat any potential rivals. China has a big military budget, but many of the weapons systems they build and buy with it can be decades behind those of the West.

You guys seem unaware of several wars that certainly affected military spending such as the Franco-German War in the 1870s, the Spanish-American War in the 1890s and the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. More recently, Reagan became US President in 1982 with a promise to increase military spending which he did and essentially bankrupted the Soviet Union forcing it to try to keep up. It collapsed in 1989 and under Yeltsin had a very bad economy so it's not surprising their military spending was very low for a while. I forget exactly when Putin came in but I suspect that would be when Russian spending started to grow again.

The US had in 1898 the Spanish American war, 1899 the Boxer Rebellion, WWI in 1917-1918, the Banana Wars in the 1920’s, prepared for and then joined WWII 1941-1945, the Cold War started in 1947ish time frame in earnest, the Korean Conflict 1950-1952, Vietnam in earnest from 1966-1972, 1983 had the Beruit bombing and the invasion of Grenada, 1991 Gulf War, Somalia in 1993, Bosnia and Kosovo in the late 1990’s, 9/11 started Afghanistan in 2001, and Iraq started 2003. During these conflicts, new military technologies were discovered or made. It is worth pointing out that in the 2000’s-2010’s there were a few big budget research projects that got terminated.

I live close by and i never knew about it. I only got to know of it recently and everyone understands the reason why it is secretive, so we don't talk about it's location at all. The US army used to visit this place (among others) for HAWS (High Altitude Warfare School) but i never knew that it also served as a decoy for placing new trainees in the school. Fun fact:- It might also be a torture chamber as the mountain people regularly find skulls and bones nearby. They may be the work of local criminals or even Tigers and Leopards, but these animals generally don't go after humans so it's unlikely.
