I notice cops don’t have a lot of fashion sense. But I get it. My pet peeve is the dad jeans or the cowboy fashion jeans. Ugh. At least the criminals fashion are worse. They don’t even pull their pants up.

You forgot being questioned with everything you do. Having to justify everything you do. Helping people only to be yelled at for ruining their high. ostracized by anyone not in this profession. Having the highest divorce rate and of course being hated. Yes being hated for trying to help. Oh I almost forgot, being the first thing the Governor wants to cut in terms of your pension. Yeah.....

He is so stoked right now. Sure that will eventually change. It will be a bittersweet moment to call my son Officer Clements. You have to be 1/2 crocked to want to go into law enforcement these days cause of the crappy state society is in. I know someone has to do the job, so I appreciate ur willingness to serve society. I will have to pray daily for my son's safety. And hope he doesn't eat his own bullet one day due to the stress.

Know all about this. It's one of the main reasons I left the Sheriffs Department. Nothing is worse than doing your normal 1500-2300 shift in the Jail, it's 2230, you think you're going home in 15 minutes and you hear that radio call... "base to Deputy (insert name). 44 (location) for a 2 (phone call)"..... Guess what you just smacked with all 8, usually in Intake, oh, it's a full moon, warm Friday the 13th night "....

Officer401, I love your work! I'm a writer and I love this candid look at the life of a policeman. And thank you for being one! Question: I noticed that when you were driving, someone passed you rather handily. As a detective, how obligated are you to deal with traffic offenses? And are there clear lines of demarkation between what offenses a patrolman and a detective will/can handle? And did I just give you another idea for a video?

The duty belt man! What used to be cool and Batman esque when I first started is now a pain to wear. Had to get rid of my straight baton because I couldn't figure out how to keep it with me in a foot pursuit when the bad guy is hitting fences. So I got an expandable baton to solve that issue. Then the department gave us Tasers and then you buy things on your own like flashlights and tourniquets. Little by little all this gear is creeping to the back of my belt. Ever work 10 hours sitting with stuff in the small of your back? Plus my belt probably weighs over 10lbs now with all the crap on it. I would kill for a modular ballistic vest to help me spread this gear around. I forgot to add...Heaven forbid you ever get comfortable in life and develop a dad bod! That belt is going to pinch and prod your little muffin top something fierce. Talk about motivation to start running again. But then if your waist gets too small then the gear has nowhere to go but into the small of your back!

I was a Corrections Officer for 16 years and some, if not most of this is par for the course for us too. It took me five years to get a Christmas off and after that I was ordered to stay two shifts in a row for a total of sixteen hours. Cops got the crooks for a few hours and then hand them off to us for 25 to Life. There are pros & cons toboth divisions bit for the most part it was a very rewarding career and the pay was good. Until I got hurt on the job and it was over as fast as it began. Thinking about being in law enforcement, married, got kids? Don’t plan on seeing them for very long each week. Once you JoinUo you’re married to the job. Good luck.

I would imagine being plain clothes can be very helpful if the officer is somewhere when a emergency/robbery/shooting etc. I don't think it would be too often, but it would give the officers an element of surprise. Or not but it defiantly means your not a target or an obvious threat to said criminal.

Imo, the worst part about being a cop (coming from someone who isn't a cop) would be telling a family about a love one passed. Especially if it's about something stupid, like he was killed in a robbery, or a drunk driver ran a red and turned them into a pancake. Idk how often someone would have to do this, but I just imagine it would be terrible.

The schedule sucks and this is coming from somebody who grew up with a father, god rest his soul, who was a cop for a little bit but was a firefighter for well over 30 years of his life. He worked 24 hour a day shifts and that meant me he missed a lot of holidays and birthdays. There were MANY MANY years where he worked Thanksgiving and or Christmas. We never got pissed off or upset about it because it sucks but hey, that was the job he signed up for and that is what he loved to do. Being a FireFighter was his passion and his love. So if he missed a holiday because he was working we just celebrated it the day before or the day after. I am 31 years old now and I couldn’t tell you how many birthdays, Christmas’s or thanksgivings where we had to celebrate a day late or early because my dad had to work. It has never been a big deal to me because we would celebrate the day before or the day after when he was home. To me that is just a normal part of life now. It’s not about a specific day, it is about the family getting together to celebrate. For Christmas My mom was really good at (like I am sure your wife will be or already is good at) doing special things with the kids to still make the day special. Kids understand especially the older they get. Because that’s the way it was my entire life I didn’t know any different I thought that was a normal thing.

@Officer401 have you ever had your shirt stays come loose from your sock and snap back and hit you in your manhood. I had that happen several times while in the corps.

I have a question ... Do LEO's get issued that black ribbon that covers the badge when another LEO dies, or do you have to personally buy it yourself.

Are you allowed to listen to music while on patrol?

“The good thing about patrol is that your days off are your days off. You don’t have to be worried about being called in.” Times have shifted, brother. I’m on patrol and anytime there is a potential for civil unrest, we’re told all days off and leave are cancelled. Detectives, who are non-essential at my department, get to be home with their families while I stand in a line and have bottles thrown at me while protecting a business.

I hate shirt stays, always getting snapped by them. I usually tuck my shirt into my underwear and that does the trick!

What about having tattoos in law enforcement ? ..in 10 months I plan on joining the SAPD (San Antonio) but I have a tattoo on my left forearm I’m hoping they just let me wear long sleeves if they have issues with it and not tell me that I have to get it removed ..it’s a memorial tattoo for my grandpa so I’d rather not remove it
