WOW, I want to go there and do that now. I had only 1 or 2 runs at a speed run in Colorado, before insurance companies made this impossible, yet I can say that around 100mph everything out to the sides blurrs and one can only see the ribbons of the tracks of the others skiers. Above 150 I suppose one cannot see anything at all, good thing it is over so fast! I would suggest that to go this fast or faster, they need to make a special automated groomer system to make the track lazer smooth - not so hard to do if you have the money! Great work and keep it going; Carpe Ski'em!

Best sport. It's criminal that they took it off from Olympics.
@forestdiomel92648 жыл бұрын
What should be interested to know is what is the maximum speed achievable before the skier starts to take off? I remember in 1992, they were speaking about that at the Olympic games when KL was a show demonstration. Back at that time, the speed was about 229km/h. We are know 25 years later at 254km/h. No one still takes off. ;) The faster you are, the more air enters under your skies and the greater the chances are the skis raise a bit and take off. This is the problem with KL, we always see the guys but what about a thorough interview with those guys about what they feel, did they ever took off a bit, etc... My only reproach in this sport is the use of a wing around the leg. They shouldn't allow that. You should use you body and that is all. Even the shape of the helmet is questionable, because it clearly allow greater speed by covering your shoulder, but well.
@kbatyai8 жыл бұрын
First of all Congrat! It's an incredible performance. But there should be a mistake in acceleration calculation. 200kmph is ~55met/sec. With theoretical 1g pure free-fall it's 5-6sec. Here you dont reach 1g acceleration because or angle, air, drag, etc.... but again: it is a huge result. Respect.
@kbatyai8 жыл бұрын
+Петя Кораблёв yes, but SKIacc==sin(AngleOfSlope)-(drag,etc) which simply much less then pure G force... so 200kmph in 5-6sec is impossible without another force... and there wasn't. but again it's fantastic!
@forestdiomel92648 жыл бұрын
+Krisztián Bátyai Could it be possible that the push the skier exerts on the sticks allows to reach this speed in the given time? Just a thought, even if I guess the force is not enough.

Great stuff! Acceleration data are clearly wrong, mean acceleration is about 0.25 g and 5.5 seconds to 200 km/h is more than in vertical free fall without friction. Why these wrong infos?
@Bad.Example8 жыл бұрын
+arkanoid1980 I read somewhere that terminal velocity for skydivers is about 190km/h. I don.t get it either...Maybe has something to do with that ultra-aerodynamic costume and some sweet-ass frictionless skis.
@arkanoid19808 жыл бұрын
+Cristi V no, the acceleration is only due to the potential energy of the body related to the earth. without other sources of energy the maximum theoretical acceleration is that of a free falling body, which is 1g in the vacuum not depending by the mass. in this case the slope is about 45 degrees, so the combined acceleration in the beginning is about 1g equally divided horizontally and vertically, so about 0.5g along the slope. this is the maximum value since the speed causes friction both with air and snow, in fact at the end the body is almost no longer accelerating, or maybe decelerating.
@arkanoid19808 жыл бұрын
+Cristi V to be exact,the acceleration without any friction for a slope at 45 degrees is g*radq (2)/2 wich is about 0.7. actually it would be not far from 0.5
@Bad.Example8 жыл бұрын
+arkanoid1980 I have been there, saw the slope with my own eyes. It.s definitely more then 45 degrees. I.d say is more like 60 (if not more)
@arkanoid19808 жыл бұрын
+Cristi V ok, they told about 100% wich is 45 degrees. anyway, the acceleration is surely less than 1g so acceleration dta are clearly wrong.

1:00 *That's phiscally impossible!* The acceleration due to gravity is 9.81m/s² that would get you up to 54 m/s (194km/h) in 5.5 seconds, if falling straight down without any resistance! This slope is nowhere near vertical and there is air resistance so absolutely impossible, unless there is hurricane wind blowing down that slope!

The information at the end of the video is clearly wrong, as already pointed out by some commenters! Acceleration faster than a F1: F1 cars accelerate to 200 km/h in less than 4 seconds (check wikipedia). Why would someone think a F1 car cannot accelerate faster than 1g which would be the maximum acceleration of the skier if falling in a vacuum? That statement is pure nonsense. 0 - 200 km/h in 5,5 sec: If free falling in a vacuum the acceleration would be 9,81 m/s² (1g) and the speed after 5,5 seconds would be 194 km/h, so even then 200 km/h would be impossible without any additional force. On a 100% slope (45°) like in Vars the acceleration of the skier is sin 45° x 9,81 m/s² = 7 m/s² (already correctly pointed out by someone below), therefore the maximum speed of the skier after 5,5 sec is roughly 140 km/h without considering any resistance (air, friction...) and in reality therefore even less. The end speed is absolutely possible. Commenters referring to the "terminal velocity" of skydivers of about 200 km/h miss the fact that this "terminal" velocity is subject to the regular horizontal position of the skydiver. If skydiving vertically (head first) you could reach much higher speeds. Check out Speed Skydiving. The skier also greatly reduces air resistance by gear and position so he can easily overcome the regular "terminal" velocity of skydivers. Vars should correct the wrong information anyway, it does no good to the sport if operating with wrong figures.

+Andreas Gasser The video should say "the acceleration is similar to a Formula 1" - 0-200km/h in less than 6 seconds.

Please verify your claims that appear false! A F1 requires 3.8 seconds to reach 200km/h. Free fall without friction (no air) would require 5.7 seconds to reach the same speed. Your claim of a skier accelerating more than a F1 with 200km/h in 5.5 seconds is undoubtedly wrong.

The acceleration claim of 200kph in 5.5 seconds is false. This is 3% faster than an object falling straight down in a vacuum. With friction (air and snow) and a non-vertical slope, the acceleration must be less than 1g (9.8m/s^2). A pretty good estimate of the acceleration can be obtained from the video. It takes the skier about 17 seconds to reach maximum speed which is claimed to be about 255kph (=71m/s). That works out to an acceleration of 71mps/17s = 4.2m/s^2 = 0.43g. This works out to a speed of 83kph in 5.5s - about the acceleration of a good sedan - much slower than a Formula 1 machine.
@houseonahillok Жыл бұрын
I was going to ask if that's faster than falling straight down out of an airplane. Good job math friend. Doesn't take away from the fact the guy is going that fast with no protection, while touching the ground.

To all the smart people, trying to sound knowledgeable read this:Based on wind resistance, for example, the terminal velocity of a skydiver in a-earth (i.e., face down) free-fall position is about 195 km/h(122 mph or 54 m/s).[2] This velocity is the asymptotic limiting value of the velocity, and the forces acting on the body balance each other more and more closely as the terminal velocity is approached. In this example, a speed of 50% of terminal velocity is reached after only about 3 seconds, while it takes 8 seconds to reach 90%, 15 seconds to reach 99% and so on.Higher speeds can be attained if the skydiver pulls in his or her limbs (see also freeflying). In this case, the terminal velocity increases to about 320 km/h (200 mph or 90 m/s),[2] which is almost the terminal velocity of the peregrine falcon diving down on its prey.[3] The same terminal velocity is reached for a typical .30-06 bullet dropping downwards-when it is returning to the ground having been fired upwards, or dropped from a tower-according to a 1920 U.S. Army Ordnance study.[4]Competition speed skydivers fly in a head-down position and can reach speeds of 530 km/h (330 mph); the current record is held by Felix Baumgartner who jumped from a height of 128,100 feet (39,000 m) and reached 1,342 km/h (834 mph), though he achieved this velocity at high altitude, where extremely thin air presents less drag force.
@EigenvectorSeven2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't matter how high the terminal velocity gets, you can never accelerate faster than 1g under free-fall.
