Below the full interview translated to English Part 3: R: To go a bit further (deeper) on that, uh, Rob Kaman was on that moment your big rival, may I say it like that? E: Well, Rob Kaman just was the big man at that moment. And, big rival, I don´t want to put it that way, because I still wasn´t that far enough. But, he eventually would became it. R: But you fought eventually against him again!? E: Yes, that was three years later. R: How did that come so? What was the result of that? E: Eventually I lost, unfortunately. Uh, the... it actually went well, altough I was realy tentioned. The Edenhall (Jaap Eden hall) was never be so full. Als the games where taking place at the Jaap Eden hall. And that was just totally sold sold. And, I just was a bit too tensioned. Wat resulted in too many mistakes. It still went pretty good, but the last round I dropped my defense and he knocked me KO. R: And then at a certain moment, if I may skip a vew steps, the call from Japan. (?) E: Yes! Yes, then we are two and a half years later. Uh, K1 was searching for fighters for a tournament where you could win 100,000 dollar. R: At that time that was a lot of money!? E: Was a lot of money! But you had to win three matches. But, it just was a great chance... first of all to go to Japan.. and also to fight a tournament. There I was a bit scared. Because three matches.. I always had injucries after a match, so how would that work out after THREE matches (?). But, anyway, it also was exiting. R: A new challange! E: A new challange (indeed), and there was a lot of money to earn. R: Yes, yes. And then you enter Japan! Take us with you... you take the airplane, you enter Japan, what kind of world is that? E: Well, I can remember from that first time, for example, I was picked up with the train... with the train to Tokyo. Uhm... R: Not from the Netherlands I suppose E: No, (both laughing), from Tokyo to the airplane bas, one of the bases of Tokyo, I just arrived, with the train. And was ectually nice and stuff. We entered at the station, and with a taxi to the hotel. It´s a beautiful big hotel. Takanawa Prince Hotel (Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa), big rooms and, yes that was very interesting. There were photoshoots. That already was something new. I didn´t realy experienced that before. R: In a professional way E: The way it happened, exactly, interviews before, and yeah, a lot of fans, a lot of people in the lobby, that were being there all the time before the matches. So that was really exiting. And uhm, the match itself, the gala itself, yes, was in a hall, where, I think 13,000 people could get in. Untill then I had fought in France, in Marseille, for 4,000 people. R: Yes, yes E: So, that was a lot! It was a beautiful hall. Yeah, it was actually amazing. I has the bad luck with the loting. I had the heavist loting. The first opponent Peter Aerts, the second opponent Maurice Smith, a very strong American. I also had the bad luck that I the fourth match of the kwarter finals, I had the second match of the half finals, I had very little rest between the half finals and the finals, so that was terrible. So then I lost in the finals, unfortunately. But I DID make a name for myself. And what was nice is that when I came three months later in Japan... I was recognised on the streets, so that was an excitement. R: And there your legacy began in Japan... there you was being seen as a hero... because later, after that you just won the K1 four times! That´s a little jump (in time) for now. E: I´m going to make a little jump back. Uh, because I just kept on achieving. And that was recognised very quickly. Uh, because of that I became one of the more popular fighters. And eventually, it waited before I finally won the first K1. I first hitted wrong, the first three times (attempts), and the fourth time it was spot on (winning K1)! And after that another three times. R: And after that ANOTHER THRE TIMES! So you have won the K1 four times (amazed)! You are being seen as a great player, as a legend. You actually have experienced the life of a rockstar. If I may say it like that. E: Uhu... just as you (laughing) R: (laughing) yeah, thank you. Uh, on a certain moment you are a big star, won four times, and then at some moment you quit fighting (?). E: Yeah. R: What do you do after that. E: That was for a moment, not difficult, but it just was just laying back, an look what I really want. I thought about improving/making bigger management on a high level. But in kickboxing it was, and still is pretty difficult. Because you really need to have good fighters if you want to earn some money of it. So that just was difficult. So what I do now, I really like the most: I train a lot, across the world, I am being asked to give trainings, and happily it still keeps on going. I´m still being asked on a regular base. next to that, uhm, I have an organisation in Japan, and a Gym under my name, the Hoost Gym and the Hoost Cup. Where I just support a lot. And where I try to make it big. R: If you look at to contemporary/current kickboxing, and you compare it to those times (back in the days), because I can ask it to you, what do you think about that? E: Well, it is funny if you talk with people of my age or older, then they say: ´In the old days it was much better, than it is now´. Yeah, I totally disagree with that. The level now is so much higher. It´s also logical, because fighters that would stand by the door to earn some extra money, there was not enough money to earn with fighting matches, now that´s not necessary anymore. And they´re training two, sometimes three times a day. yeah, then you automatically become a better fighter. The level of the matches is increased giganticly. If you look at a match of the 1980´s or a current match, then the differences are very clearly visible in my opinion. R: Uhm, and if you, for instance, look at the current champion, because he is also a heavyweight: Rico Verhoeven, what kind of tips do you want to give to him? E: Well, I think that Rico is doing very well. He appears a lot in the media. So, the exposure that we had much less, he does get. R: Then you´re talking about the Netherlands? E: Then i´m defenitely talking about the Netherlands, absolutely. But it´s very important, because in the Netehrlands it begins, there you most get your talents. And if I just look at the current possibilities with television what was not possible in the old days, and where someone like me was one of the founders, then he does very well! And he is behaving very well. Because of you, me, Peter Aerts, Sem Schilt, all the fighters from the old days the (bad) image of kickboxing has changed. Because I have experienced the times that... I have nown André Brilleman, for example, that was killed 33 years ago and was a very famous kickboxer. I have experienced the times that if you say that you are a kickboxer that people automaticly were thinking that you were a criminal. Well, that image is totally changed. I´m happy that i´m one of the people that has been the founders of that (change). R: What can we expect from Ernesto Hoost? We are not writing you off, I don´t even want to say those words... what could we expect from you Ernesto? E: Well, you can... in any case i´m continuing to do things in Japan. Uhm, I still have some ideas for the Netherlands, but I will keep quiet about that for now. But, you will definitely see me some more. R: Ernesto, I really want to thank you for this interview. And I like to see a lot more from you. People keep on following us at Official Bonjasky. We are coming back to Ernesto for sure, but for now, again, thank you for watching! Goodbye! E: Goodbye!

Below the full interview translated to English Part 2: R: It means that you had talent (?). E: Yes, It means that I had talent, because, some boys who after one year still were not be able to step, and I already could do it in two weeks. So, for me that was clear that I had talent. R: On a certain moment you have made the switch to Fosgym. Why, and how did that go? E: Well, now were talking about 6 years later. I had, uhm, fought 14 or 15 matches. I already made a couple of trips, I had trips to America, a trip to Canada, uhm, but I just conticed that I didn´t make progression here... or ´making progression´ is said a bit overdone, but I noticed that I reached the limit here (Hoorn). So, yes, so I needed to make a switch to Amsterdam in this case. Because in Amsterdam there were three big sportschools: Mejiro Gym, Vos Gym and, uh, Chakuriki. So, out of those three I chose one. R: And, why it became (you chose for) Vos Gym? E: Well, Chakuriki, that had a bit of a certain.. how should I put it... negative reputation. Mejiro Gym, uhm, Rob Kaman was training there. Earlier that year I had fought a match against Kaman. In the last moment I was called if I wanted to fight against Kaman. Uh, sunday evening I was called if I wanted to fight a couple of hours later. R: So (amazed) E: And, I did it. And I lost on points. And that was actually a good result, because he hitted everyone Knockout. And there was promised to me that, if I was really ready, that I was allowed to fight against him. So, Mejiro Gym was not an option for me anymore. So Vos Gym was the only option. R: Uhm, because those where the three biggest and strongest gyms in Amsterdam!? And you chose for Vos Gym. E: Yeah R: Did it also had anything to do with the trainer that was giving lessons there? E: No, it devinitely had nothing to do with that. Because it was very hurtful for my trainer because he was from Vos Gym. And they where not seperated on a nice way. So it was painful. I actually didn´t like it, but I DID thought it was the best choice for myself. What I already said: Chakuriki, that did not apply, and Kaman was training at Mejiro, where I wanted to fight against another time.
