It's so brilliantly written too. It has to start out on piano and sound somewhat jazz-like so we can believe this is good for Seb. Then it has to transition into a pop song where the pianist is clearly being underused and just a small piece of something that doesn't suit him. AND be catchy on top of that.

I think of the subtle little touches of brilliance here is how Seb plays a lot of the piece with hand in his pocket, I think the move was intentional either on Gosling's part or maybe the director, but it shows that even though he seems like he may just be accidentally enjoying the gig, it comes easy to him and doesn't pose the challenge that he actually aspires to. can't praise this film's charm and character enough!

This is a great scene because it's doing so many things at once. Mia is going there to support Sebastian, who is finally starting to get a taste of the musical recognition he's been looking for. And even though this isn't what his dream was, he's still putting his all into it, I mean listen to that solo. And on top of all that, the song is good. It's not Seb's taste or style, but it is still a song that people can listen to and enjoy

@HappyTofu2424 Жыл бұрын
Sebastian hates the music the band plays, he admitted it in their climactic dinner argument. Sebastian's whole character arc is that he doesn't care what people think of him and doesn't listen to others. That's why he encouraged Mia to write her own show and when she was nervous if people would like it he was like "who cares?" He cared about his art and being an artist and it didn't matter to him whether or not people liked it. This scene is important to cause it shows Sebastian finally giving into what people think of him, which was Mia speaking to her mom about how he didn't have a steady gig or income. That made him worried about their future so he decided to take this gig in the band even though he hates the music. Mia is appalled in this scene since she knows this is not the type of music he likes and she feels like he abandoned his dreams. He's abandoned his whole character too, he was the guy who lived in the moment going from gig to gig and didn't care what people thought of him and focused on the art.

I see this scene a bit differently, Seb said it later during the argument and I was like "he f#$@in noticed that!" I see Sebastian who just enjoys what he's doing, he got his intro here, he didn't just settle. He plays it cool but Mia is just shocked, because she thought this band won't be good, and she is just jealous that he is first in getting out of being noone, because Sebastian didn't care about other people and she did, she tried harder than him. Her face expressions says it all, she came to see some band which is good but never gonna make it and she heard a hit song.

MineBulider from my understanding, Seb overheard Mia talking to her parents about Seb not having a regular job yet, felt guilty, and joined the band from guilt and for money (which made sense, the money part, since he needed money to make his dream come to light).Mia knew this wasn't stuff Seb liked and, upon finding out he would be in the band for years, thought he was selling his dreams out and was disappointed in him (but again, he would need a lot of money to start/buy his own club). Seb knew she was right, but threw it back in her face which started their downfall.

Plus, the jazz that Seb's always talking IS new jazz - traditional jazz is the jazz of the 20s and 30s, Louis Armstrong, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington....how could Seb not know that? My dad's a jazz musician and a bit of a music snob (the whole family sort of are) but he can still appreciate that there are other forms of good music that he also loves - ie blues, soul, funk - and when he played in a band that wasn't strictly jazz he knew that as long as it means playing good music it's not selling out. Plus, he and I can both see what's wrong with calling a jazz club 'Chicken on a stick' and with saying that jazz is dying.

That's the one thing I don't get about Sebastian - none of the the jazz icons (whom I love) played traditional jazz, they were part of a new wave of jazz, away from the traditional jazz of Louis, Duke, Benny, Billie, Ella and the Count (all of whom I also love). How could he not know that?
@danielcooper12945 жыл бұрын
agenttheater5 Well frankly I don’t think this song IS jazz. Funk, soul, jazz-influenced pop, but a far cry from jazz. Most of the jazzy elements are crushed out in favour of pop, whereas the greats of jazz built upon the old in a way that didn’t blend it too closely with other pop styles.

Man, just watched the movie again and this was a really bad scene for me (not the song). They were basically saying that Jazz should stick to what it was and anything other than that is bad. It's like jazz should always be this troubled thing. John Legend said it perfectly in the scene before when he said something like jazz is dying because they're stuck in the past. In the end Ryan's character CAN do both this mainstream music gigs AND start his small Jazz club. It shouldn't have been a big issue.
@adrianmedeiros84315 жыл бұрын
when i first whatched the movie i thought that too, but now i think that whats the scene is saying is: new jazz isnt bad, what is bad is what mia understood. thats not Seb. it it'snt about the music it about the huge sacrifice his making. he is basically betraying what he belives. i know that he is doing it for her but its only going to make him miserable
@JaimeSax994 жыл бұрын
Also because jazz is everything but dying. The entire basis of the movie (a white guy in charge of saving jazz music from death) is totally unreal. As for Whiplash, Chazelle's idea of jazz totally mismatches what jazz IS and HAS BEEN. This is why this song is the best part of the movie (despite being unrealistic too.... I think that either Bruno Mars can't afford 3 background vocals AND a dance crew for a debut show in a club)...

I don't think the movie was trying to say that jazz was supposed to stick to what it was. That was just Sebastian's point of view and Mia understood that deep down, Sebastian didn't want to be playing the new music. Even though he's not a fan of it, clearly the band was having success so it's not like the new music was a bad thing, it just wasn't what Sebastian wanted. And it would have been difficult for him to open the club while touring with the band from city to city.

I don’t know why I keep moving my body I don’t know if this is wrong or if it’s right I don’t know if there’s a beat, or something’s taking over me And I just know I’ll feel so good tonight [Verse 2] I don’t know what your name is but I like it I’ve been thinking ‘bout some things I wanna try I don’t know what you came to do, but I wanna do it with you And I just know I’ll feel so good tonight [Pre-Chorus] Oh, if we keep on dancing Take our rhythm to new heights Feel the heat of passion, baby Light up the night [Chorus] We could start a fire Come on, let it burn baby We could start a fire Let the tables turn baby We could start a fire [Bridge] I just know I feel so good Don’t you know I feel so good I just know I feel so good Tonight [Verse 3] I don’t care if this turns into a riot Lets get reckless, tear this place down to the floor Turn the music way up loud Can’t nobody stop us now I just know I feel so good tonight I just know I feel so good tonight [Chorus] We could start a fire Come on, let it burn baby We could start a fire Let the tables turn baby We could start a fire [Outro] I just know I feel so good Don’t you know I feel so good Don’t you know, don’t you know?

With music almost dominating the rest of the movie making it fantasy-like, this was the most real-life-like part for me

As a jazz musician myself, Seb's just being petty here. The Fusion Jazz shown here is just as pure as Straight-Ahead Jazz. Then again, everything is pure compared to smooth jazz...

i dont understand really why she was upset about it, he is really passionate about jazz and theres no doubt about that. His dream is to open a jazz bar, so he is playing in this band for money. He is getting money for his dream, he cant just suddenly gain money and open a bar.

I remember watching this movie in the cinema and when this song started I told my friend "I will get that guitar any time soon" less than a month later an extraordinary chance came to me and I bought the 335 of my dreams.

Although I love this movie, this scene is frustrating for me. How are we supposed to be believe that Sebastian and Mia have been dating the entire time he's been in The Messengers and she's yet to hear their music? I dated a musician and he would play their new stuff for me all the time, not just at their shows. It was one of the things I really connected with him on (which clearly is the same for Mia, since she's also in the entertainment industry). It would be a lot more believable if it didn't seem like she'd never heard him play in the band before this moment. I get what the movie is doing here, showing how he's doing something he said he never would -- and the performance is over-the-top in many ways so it would be jarring. BUT if she really loved him, I feel she would support him in any endeavor, even if it was something he didn't necessarily want originally. He's successful and seems to be having fun with it, regardless of it not being his "style." Her being SO taken aback feels like an unnecessary exaggeration. I'm sure he would have been supportive if she landed a car commercial or something, even though it wasn't a starring role in a major film. People in real life would be..sometimes you work crappy jobs to make ends meet. Doesn't mean you wouldn't still support each other. sorry didn't mean to type this much but...here we are. Otherwise I thought this film accomplished exactly what it meant to. The direction was incredible. Also, I really do like this song, even though we're not "supposed to."

Hi Leah, I understand what you mean, but I think it's meant to show just how disconnected that Seb and Mia have become. Seb clearly isn't doing what his passion it, he's touring with this band constantly to build towards his eventual dream as well as help support Mia's. He isn't proud of the music, he's just doing what he needs to. Mia is so wrapped up in writing and designing her play that it's all that she can focus on. They've both lost sight of why they're doing this in the first place and it's tearing them apart.
