Wilhelm II was a complicated man, not a saint, not a sinner, perhaps in some ways, both. He loved his family, and loved his country, and he acted on those impulses. When Serbia initially apologized for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, his reaction was one of glee, and he said that he was glad that Germany had taken "the high road", meaning, "not war". It was his generals who kept pushing him towards that end. Wilhelm blamed the Jews, among others, for the loss of his throne, but he also said in response to Kristallnacht and other Nazi atrocities against the Jews that he felt, for the first time in his life, "ashamed to be German". Had WW1 never happened, we would still have to wonder if the German, Russian and other monarchies that fell would have survived. Socialists and communists were at work in many countries in Europe. In Russia, they killed Nicholas II's grandfather because he made progressive changes that competed with their own agenda. They were hell bent on bringing monarchies down, despite monarchy being the most natural and successful form of government in history. As an aside, a film that some of you may like is "The Exception". It's a somewhat fictional account of Wilhelm II's life at Doorn, with Christopher Plummer as the ex-Kaiser. The Imperial German anthem was actually "Heil dir im Siegerkrantz," which had the same tune as "God Save the KIng". Before WW I, the "Deutschland über Alles" tune was the anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, "Gott erhalte unsern Kaiser".

I came originally from Bradford West Yorkshire which had a large german population prior to the tragic events of ww1 its saddens me that the war ever took place HM King George the vth being a cousin to HM Kaiser Whilhelm the second , my grandfather was in that war and once told me their is no glory in war just dead and maimed people scared for life , The kaiser spent time at windsor and Osborne house with Queen Victoria and his British relatives , its not just tragic its so sad that europe was plunged into ww2 I hope that one day the british orders of the garter and other decorations will be restored to the german royal house

Ganz besonders gern von Kaiser mit seinen großen Minderwertigkeitskomplexen. Ich hatte das große Glück mit 4 Generationen Weiber aus einer Linie gleichzeitig im Raum oder auf den markt gehen zu können .Oma sagte immer "Kind sei still und hör zu, dann lernst du was" Und sie erzählten sich , während meine Augen und Ohren ganz bei ihnen waren Geschichten aus der Familie und Begebenheiten wo sie "Ihren Reisekaiser" erlebten .Ich hab das noch gar nicht verstehen können, wie gerne sie ihn hatten , denn ich wusste doch , das es Könige und Kaiser nur in Märchen gab . Und mit einer Hingabe und Liebe bekam ich erklärt wie das war , wenn der Kaiser zu Besuch kam .Und das die Königin natürlich auch sehr schön war .Meine kleine Schwester bekam ihren Namen auf Omas Bitte hin . Oma war stolz das sie bei der Einweihung des Kölner Dom Blümchen streuen durfte . So herzlich warm spricht man nur über Menschen die man liebt .Und das MUSS guten Grund haben .

The introductory tune which is playing is, of course, that of the National Anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Germany did have a “National Hymn” with this tune, of course, however, the Official National Anthem of the German Empire had the same tune as our own National Anthem. The Kingdom of Prussia also had its own National Anthem.

Just a shame that Kaiser Wilhelm II didn’t get on with King Edward VII and later King George V and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the empire went to war with Germany who had previously got along fairly okay prior to Wilhelm becoming Kaiser. I’m British and just glad that my Great-Great Grandfather survived the First World War as he would not have my Great-Grandfather until after the war in 1922.
