Ok so using 3.7v D cells worked great. Amazing performance and pretty equal to my 12v bubbler. I used a 4 inch round stone and the extra voltage really made it perform. Time will tell how long it lasts using 3.7 volts but for now it really cranks out the bubbles.

When removing the stone from water leave pump running for a few minutes afterward to keep the minerals in the water from drying inside the stone and eventually plugging up the air passages making it less efficient over time . Let the pump push the water and minerals out before shutting off . A trick i learned years ago that keeps my pump pushing plenty of air for several years . Just sayin

It would be a lot simpler to just buy a 5v air pump, designed for a fish tank, then supply power from any standard lithium power bank. I'm working on several different lithium-based solutions, and one that uses a waterproof 12v - 3v buck converter. It allows you to go straight from any 12v power source and run the pump at the correct voltage for days, maybe weeks, depending on the size of the battery. For anyone using one of these in a boat, it's a no-brainer. In the start of your video, you have the batteries installed correctly for this particular DC motor, which is probably only rated for 1.5v. Most of these little bubblers come with a 3v motor and are designed for the batteries to be installed in series. The 3v motors often have a high/low setting, which basically halves the amperage being drawn. I would look for the specs on that motor before running it at 3+ volts for very long.

@@brianpierson7708 - Search for "SMAKN DC/DC Converter 12V Step Down to 3V/3A Power Supply Module" on Amazon. Make sure your aerator runs on 3V power before you buy this. I have discovered that the cheapest ones run on 1.5 volts. The easy way to tell is if your D cell batteries are supposed to be in series or parallel. If in series, that's 3.2v, nominal. If in parallel, that's 1.6v, nominal.

If factory motor is rated for 1.5 volts, how long will the motor hold up at the increased voltage?
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 3 жыл бұрын
The truth is that DC is not that precise. All DC motors have a large voltage variance. Sure, if you ran this little motor at 12 or 24 volta it would burn out almost instantly. But it is totally fine with 2 or 3 volts. As if yet, I have not seen any motors burn out. I learned this from a friend that has been doing it for years, and has never had a motor burn out.

@@thejungleexplorer I agree. I wonder if greasing the pump assembly might help prolong the life. I sprayed the electrical contacts of mine with golf cart battery protector spray I had laying around as well. I have a Hush Bubbler and the only weak point I see is the strength of the pump. It may be overkill but for the $ they ought to use higher voltage batteries and thicker wires. Even going to a rechargeable lithium setup with an external USB plug would do wonders for its modernized utility.

@thejungleexplorer

Something seems off. The is no such thing as a GROUND in DC electricity. A ground is only used with AC electricity. With DC you have Negative, and the Negative is shared in all DC systems. Yea I just put 1860 batteries in my bubble box, runs the same way and have to do no modifications… 18650s just fit a little tight. I only do it if I really need to keep something important alive because I fear it will blow up the cheap motor.
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 3 жыл бұрын
I have found that anything beyond 2.5 volts does not really produce much more air and stresses the motor. 18659 batteries are rated at 3.5 volts nominal, but have a charge of 4 volts when fully charged. That is way more voltage than what I demonstrated in this video. Another thing about 18650 batteries is that they are not all the same length. Their length varies according to their capacity rating. There can be up to a 1/4" difference from on to another. But it is interesting to hear you have used them. Thanks for telling me this.

I don't know what the rating is, but I have never had one burn out pushing it up to 3 volts. DC motors are not like AC motors. They can operate over a wide variety of voltages. The weakness here is the pump. Pushing it past 2.5 volts does not really give much more air.

Will this shorten life of pump?
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Depends. Most of these little motors work great when new but as the cheap plastic parts wear and get dirty, they start to bog down do to under voltage. The higher voltage makes them work more efficiently and may extend their life to a point. A lot of people don't realize that under voltage is typically harder on a DC motor than over voltage.
@deanmoberg445
@deanmoberg445 3 жыл бұрын
Obviously increasing the voltage on a D/C motor will increase its output. I dare you to run that device at level you showed in your demo for an extended period of time. That pump. All the parts connected ( connecting rod , etc.) Will fail in short order. Interesting concept though. By-the-way, I did call you out. Lol!

How have you stored the battery with a 5 gallon bucket?
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the question. I am not quite sure exactly what you are asking. The battery is a sealed 6v lead acid battery and can be stored just about anywhere. But because of the little voltage regulator that I showed how to install, you can use just about any battery source up to a 36 volta battery.
@JCL2575
@JCL2575 3 жыл бұрын
I usually carry my gear and bait pail with me while fishing. I was trying to solve for the added weight of the battery that you had chosen to use. I decided to get a portable battery pack used to charge a cell phone or a tablet. I also purchased a voltage regulator from your link in the video description. I wired her up and she powers on. The voltage shows 4.6 volts. The model regulator I received from Amazon was different than yours in that there are two slotted dials to regulate voltage and amps. My issue now is when turning the dial, it doesn’t increase or decrease the voltage. I just received a second unit from the seller to replace the first because I wasn’t sure if it was the part or something else. The replacement part has done the same thing as the first.

@@JCL2575 Thank you for letting me know this. Sometimes manufacturers change products after I place a link to a page. I have had no trouble with mine, but as you say, they are now selling a different model. I found this one that looks more similar to the one I got: amzn.to/38Dsef4 #ad. It has pretty good reviews, but that is not saying much because the one in my link has a better review rating than this one. That is a problem with Amazon.com reviews, if the seller changes the product model on the page, amazon keeps all the reviews from the previous models. When I am buying a product, I read the negative reviews on it. I look for consistency of failure or defects, not just the standard "I HATE this product" type of negative reviews. If I find several people that experienced the same problem with a product, that tells me there may be a design defect with it. There are lemons even with the best products, so just because something failed does not mean the whole line is bad, but if there is a pattern of failure, that is what you have to watch out for. I would send back the unit you have and get your money back, and try another unit from someone else. Obviously, there is a design flaw with the new model since you have two that acted the same way. There are many other models out there that do the exact same thing.

Don't be fooled. There's a reason they only take 2 1.5vdc d size batteries. Sure you can get more power out of the motor by increasing the voltage. But you are reducing the life of the motor. Doesn't take much to burn those little motors out. Definitely a fun little project though.
